The best size I have found is 1/4" to 3/8" pebbles.

rough ones are tough on your hands later. i experimented with lava rocks and those are tough...i say use the smooth pea size ones, and really run the cycle for...

I agree!. I couldn't get the smooth pea gravel, but the crushed I have isn't bad. I wish I'd been able to get mine up soon enough to let it cycle a month...

i say it depends on the water source. if you can get water where there are already critters in them like in a river, lake or pond. i would say immediately....
