The 3rd Annual Bay Area Regional Science Olympiad will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2008, in San Jose.  While that seems far away at the moment, it will be upon us quickly!  Over 200 high school students from across the Bay area are expected to participate.

We are in need of 50+ volunteers to make this tournament run smoothly.  I hope you will be able to volunteer for this worthwhile and exciting program.

The volunteer opportunities include:

- EVENT SUPERVISOR - This person will run one of the 23 different events during the tournament.  Depending on the event, this will involve writing & scoring a test, developing & grading a lab experiment, or judging a device contest.  Guidelines are provided for each event, and past tests may be available for use.  Events are held between 8:00 a.m.  and 2:00 p.m.  Time commitment varies depending on the time the event is scheduled and on the amount of preparation needed.

- EVENT ASSISTANT - This person will assist the event supervisor by helping to arrange the room, hand out materials, and grade/score the event.  Volunteers can sign up for 1 to 4 events that will be held between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on the day of the tournament.

- REGISTRATION ASSISTANT - Helps with coach and volunteer registration. Works at the registration table from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  May assist with lunch setup and other administrative tasks as well.

- SCORING ASSISTANT - Assists with overall scoring (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)

Training will be provided several weeks before the tournament.  Lunch will be provided for volunteers on the day of the tournament.

Attached is a volunteer form, a tentative schedule for the day, and a description of the various events.  Please fill out the volunter form and email it to me as soon as possible.  Also, please circulate the information to your colleagues and friends and encourage them to volunteer!  The tournament is completely run by volunteers, and we need lots of help!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me anytime!  Thanks so much for your help and support!

Hi Murali,
Are you planning on forming a high school or middle school team?  If you will have a high school team, then you are welcome to participate in the Bay Area Regional Science Olympiad and I can send you more information.  However, if you will have a middle school team, then you can compete in another region.  We don't offer the middle school level competition in the Bay Area Region.  You will have to request information from the region where you plan to participate.

So let me know which level your team will be.

Thanks for your interest in Science Olympiad!
Jennifer

Hi Anagha,
Thanks for your interest in Science Olympiad.  Unfortunately, the Bay Area Regional Science Olympiad is only available for high school students.  In the future, we may expand to middle school, but not this year.  Middle school teams are welcome to compete in other regions, such as San Joaquin or Stanislaus Counties.  You can check out the other regions by going to the following website: http://www.stan- co.k12.ca. us/scoe/admin/ nScienceOly/ sites.htm.
Good luck!

Hello Jennifer, I will be there Thursday. Thanks for sending the event list. We are going to hit the ground running this year.

Dan Burns
Los Gatos High School

PS I noticed that the flyer asked for an RSVP but your email didn’t. You may want to send out an email reminder asking for RSVPs if that is important. Or maybe I just did that for you!

Hi Raji,
The Bay Area will be hosting only the high school tournament again this year.  We may expand to middle school in the future, but we're not able to expand this year.  The meeting is primarily for high school coaches.  As in the past, middle schools can participate in other regional tournaments.

Regarding an elementary fun day, I'm not aware of any schools in the Bay Area hosting one.  If I hear about one, I'll let you know.

Thanks for your interest in Science Olympiad!

The Florida Science Olympiad and NorCal Science Olympiad are pleased to announce a partnership to host a special Coaches Conference Series for Science Olympiad Participants across the nation.

Science Olympiad is a competition for middle and high school students with the goal to improve the quality of science education by engaging students in hands-on physics, chemistry, earth space science, biology, and engineering utilizing an inquiry approach to learning.  Fully correlated to the national and state standards, Science Olympiad is a great way to turn students onto science as schools prepare for the state assessments in Florida, California and across the nation!

Two workshops series are available for TEACHERS, PARENTS and STUDENTS who want to prepare their teams for Science Olympiad and learn more about what Science Olympiad has to offer:

Coaches Conference – WEST October 5-6, 2007 – San Francisco, California

Coaches Conference – EAST October 19-20, 2007 – Orlando, Florida

For a cost of $125.00 per person, participants will receive event preparation materials, instruction from top judges, and lots of information on how to set and organize their teams.  All 23 events for each division will be presented in breakout sessions that will be hands-on and interactive.  A great way to prepare for the 2008 regional, state, and national competitions!

And, we are still in search of presenters for the conference.  If you are an expert in one of the 23 events, sign up to present an event and help others as they prepare for Science Olympiad.  All presenters will receive a $25 per session honorarium, plus meals and hotel for those outside of the conference area.

For more information or to register for either Coaches Conference EAST or WEST, go to www.floridascienceolympiad.org

Feel free to pass this on to others interested in Science Olympiad.

Jennifer: I would like to invite you to attend our first annual science
recognition night that we are planning for Friday evening, June 1. We will have
some finger food about 6:30 and a ceremony starting abut 7:30. Science Olympiad
is one of the major events on our list and I would appreciate it if you would
want to come and present the certificates to our team. I am trying very hard to
have some excellent women role models for the young lady's in our Academic
Challenge Club. You woud be an excellent addition to the event. Our evening
speaker is Dr. Bruno Machon (Hitachi Global Storage Technology). One or our
parents has a good contact. You would help provide excellent balance to the
evening.

The event will be held in room C-120 at Mission High which is very easy to reach
off of I-680, north Mission Blvd exit. Drive north on Mission Blvd about one
mile to the school on the left. The time is short and sorry for the short
notice but we are putting this together on a very short time line ourselves.

ps; I hope this does not go out to the whole group you sent to. If it does, I
am sorry to everyone else. I did not want to spam you.

Greetings!

Happy New Year!  I hope your new year is off to a great start!  I also hope that your Science Olympiad team is busy preparing for the big day!

Just a reminder: If you haven't submitted your Registration Form, you need to send it in as soon as possible.  The deadline is Feb. 1.  The registration form is attached.

Also, schools need to provide at least 2 volunteers.  The event is run almost completely by volunteers, so everyone needs to pitch in.  We especially need Event Supervisors to write tests, prepare lab experiments, etc.  Please send in your volunteer forms (attached) as soon as possible.  The deadline is Feb. 15, but I would like to have volunteers identified before then.

If you have any questions or need any help, feel free to ask!  Good luck!

Hi,

Sorry for telling you so late, but none of the members (me included) can't attend the coaches meeting on thursday. Is there any way for me to get any of the information?
