Re: [beam] A really good question

Hi Jérôme,

The letter Q was apparently an arbitary choice as the component reference designator for transistors by the committee that standarizes such things in  IEEE 315.  Some IEC standards uses the letter V and U was also used as the letter designation transistors.

I don't think that the transistor letter designation is related to Q point  which is  an amplifier circuit parameter also used with vacuum tubes.

Thank you Wilf

Yes this makes sense.

Well today we learn transistor and I was wondering why we use "Q"? Do you know why we write "Q" for transistor?

Thanks agian,

I will tell the math teacher tomorrow.

L - probably after Lenz would defined self-inductance in Lenz's   Law.

Subject: [beam] A really good question

Hello world,

I am having fun in school. We are learning so many things. How to make digital logic circuit using AND gate, OR gate, NAND gate, NOR gate, etc. It is really cool! WE also learn how to use the oscillisoscope to mesure and calculte voltage, and other stuff. ( I just don't know the name in english ) I think it might be phase difference, amplitude, etc.

In math, the teacher ask a question concerning a symbol use in electronic. We use R for resistor, C Capacitor, etc.
When using a coil, we use "L".
Where the "L" comes from?
Why use "L"?

A coil is inductance so it is not "I" because that is current. Is "L" the name of a guy?

I am searching the web for the answer. If you know the answer, please tell me.

Thank you,

Jérôme Demers
