Prince William County VA schools have TERC and are FIGHTING   Message List

I'm sorry to hear of the BS you are dealing with Bill. Maybe you need to
escalate things up to your State Board of Education and contact your County
Attorney's office if you are being threatened. Sounds like they are way off
and don't have a legal leg to stand on, maybe you need to solicit some new
folks to run for your School board. I think we may take that approach soon
but unfortunately it will be 2 years until our next election. Even their
email records are probably "public information" via the freedom of
information act: http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/nsa/foia.html
Our school district got a new Superintendent a couple of years ago and he
brought in TERC Math Investigations that equally SUCKS! Our county math
dept claims they had public review and comments but none of us heard about
it until it was a done deal. The School board did approve it in our case
but the Superintendent and Math Department put on quite a dog and pony show
with data that was "too good to be true" and the school board approved it
without asking enough questions and parents didn't know what was going on at
the time. We are now in our second year with MI (k-3rd grade now) and most
parents I've talked to and many of the teachers think this is a big mistake
and our children are falling further and further behind in math, although
the teachers and many parents are afraid to speak up publicly. The
preliminary data now coming out from our test scores doesn't support any of
the promises they made for this MI curriculum. And I am not sure if they
are getting $$ back for doing this but our Math Dept has not been allowing
any other texts or materials to be used along with MI, although now they
have changed their story and "claim" that they are supplementing. No parent
or teacher that I have spoken with has ever seen any evidence of this
supplementary material though. Next year they are extending it to 4th-5th
grades. Parents at Elem Schools across our county are starting to organize
and fight to get basic math back in our schools. It is not easy but a
battle we must fight, or watch our children's education spirals down into
the toilet as standards continue to be lowered until EVERY child is left
behind!
