I try to look from another point of view: what are the other choices
available for managing research references and notes?

I tried NotaBene, EndNote, RefWorks and others I can't even remember.
None gave me the flexibility Biblioscape is able to.

In my opinion the biblioscape business owners should invest large in
the program and boost up its development to a rather professional way
where they can speed things up a bit, use more programmers and come up
with a simpler, cleaner GUI.

There is always something going wrong with my biblioscape, but what I
can accomplish with this software none of the competition is able to
provide.

Good luck on your work.

Fernando

Dear Dr. Berg,

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. I'm printing it out, and
I'll have to study it more closely. I do very much wish to use
Biblioscape and benefit from it. But so often I am discouraged by
the many difficulties of it, which are compounded by not having much
in the way of clear documentation. Again, it was very kind of you to
reply at such length. Thank you!

Have used biblioscape since 4.0; converted from 6.65 to 7.0 last year
when it first came out. In retrospect, I wish I had had more warning
about the potential problems of conversion. As I was only using the
Reference module at the time, I can only speak of the problems there.
In version 6, I had been using many to many cataloging, i.e., a
reference was copied to each of several appropriate folder. I am
working on a computer based "book" on plant structure, with Chapters,
Sections, and Subsections. Each reference, therefore,(about at the
time 5000)was cross-referenced in several folders including ones for
author, and source. Converting to 7.0 without doing away with this
spiderweb of cross-references was ungood. What 7.0 allows is entry
into only one reference folder and all cross-referencing is done with
the category function (Professional Model also has a category module
that has more functionality, but I don't understand most of it). Part
of the process of conversion involves leaving the reference in only
one of its multiple folders, and converting all the other folders into
categories. What I ended up with was a mess that took several months
to sort out. After many attempts to clear up the categories, I finally
resorted to deleting them all and starting over. So, I would
certainly recommend simplifying your database before converting to
version 7.

What Paul Chen recommends is to use only broadly defined reference
folders for locating the reference, and do the fine-tuning with
categories. If I were to start over now, I would probably put
references into only 7-8 folders, i.e., one for each chapter.

I, in fact, do not spend a lot of time categorizing references, but
rather use the search function which can be used within each module or
to include all modules. I find that this serves well if you have a
good database to work with and saves a lot of time trying to create
appropriate categories and linking references to them.

Impression of upgrade. It is well worth the upgrade, and probably
worth the upgrade to Professional (certainly to Standard), if you are
doing serious work. I have found over the years that each upgrade,
each patch, makes the program more usable and more stable. I used,
even last year with 6.65, to have the thing crash or lock up several
times a day. Now it rarely locks up, unless I do something really
stupid. It still does not fail safe in all instances, but it is such a
complex piece of software that I am surprised that it works at all. I
haven't tried the composition module yet, but am only now beginning to
come to terms with the Notes module.

Cheers,

Dr. Arthur R. Berg

There are a few significant changes that you may look at Biblioscape
website, but in practical terms - that is what you mean, I presume -
the major difference is in being able to open several windows. Notes,
references and everything else is now independent. This feature makes
my work a lot easier and intuitive.

As for the composition module, I am experience trouble, but it is in
the experimentation phase yet. That's why it is there even on the
Light edition. Contact Paul Chen at Biblioscape forum for more details.

Thank you for doing this. Although not yet a biblioscape user (i'm
waiting for the easy openoffice integration that scholar's aid offers
for footnotes and so) i keep an eye on it.

I have been using Biblioscape for several years and have found the
latest versions sufficiently stable at least on Windows XP that I
would have no problems recommending it to all comers (and do recommend
it). It has its quirks but the price is right and generally does the
formatting sufficiently well in an MS Word environment for quite large
(100+page reports) that I have been satisfied. Just make sure that
you have turned OFF track changes before doing your formatting (and
removed the changes).

His PALM program has serious challenges because of the way it installs.

I certainly find Biblioscape to be very stable. It's a very powerful
package, which means that it takes a bit more time to get used to
than other, simpler offerings. Which makes an important point: the
key to choosing bibiographic software is the same as it is for any
other software: first you have to figure out your needs. If you look
at comparisons (e.g.
http://www.burioni.it/forum/ors-bfs/text/index.html) you'll
immediately be struck by the way that they all have their good points
and their bad points. Also, of course, these reviews are always
behind the times, reporting on older versions, so you need to be
careful to make sure that you've checked that a feature that is
important to you that the review says isn't in Product X hasn't been
added in the current release.

For me, Biblioscape's great strength is its web-friendliness, which
means that I only need to have one database in one location, so my
colleagues I can work with it anywhere in the world. It has a whole
bunch of great features, for example the ability to link references
(I use that a lot, for example to show who cites whom) I haven't yet
had the chance to assess Biblioscape 7 yet, but it looks like a big
step forward.

And from Scholar's Aid i can directly inject references into Open Office Writer,
something seemingly lacking in most programs. Not everybody in this world likes
to use M$Office.

You may also want to check BiblioExpress that can be run from an USB
drive. Biblioscape version 7 alpha has just been released. I used to
work with version 5 but for some reason could not introduce it to my
workflow.

> Scholar's Aid, from my experience and what I have heard, can be buggy.

Unfortunatelly, that's right. Even worse news: there is in fact no
support, and it looks like the development has been stopped.

I've just downloaded it, but my first impression is no good: it does not
remember the size/position/layout of its many windows and
I have to change them every time I launch the program. Very annoying...

What I would suggest you is to try the following (I have all of them
on my 'waiting list'):

Scribe (free, several enthusiastic voices on its mailing list but many
questions/troubles as well, good support);
Zotero (free plug in to Firefox 2, works fine with Amazon and plenty
of on-line libraries, integrates with Word, you can add notes, links,
make tags - seems to be very attractive, indeed);
Bibliographix (40 Euro, handles both references and notes - 'ideas',
have found it only recently).

If you try some of them, I would be happy to know your opinion, too.

Hope it helps,

Wojciech/S

There is a new version of Biblioscape on the way -- but it seems to be taken
longer than anticipated.

Scholar's Aid, from my experience and what I have heard, can be buggy.

IdeaMason appears to be a program that has kicked biblio software up a
couple of notches. Recently version 3 came out -- and so far it looks very
good. Version 2 was given good reviews by people I know who are very
particular about their software.

Check it out -- there is a free trial period: http://www.ideamason.com/

Hello,

I am interested in finding a reliable program like Biblioscape to help
in writing my dissertation. There are a few programs out there
besides Biblioscape, such as Scholar's Aid, and I am trying to get
feedback from those who have used either program. In particular, how

I was just making another manuscript containing formula editor
formulas (OLE objects) using Biblioscape 6.6 latest patch release, and
ran into the old problem.

May I kindly remind you that this bug still needs to be fixed?

Thanks

May I kindly remind you that this bug still needs to be fixed?

Subject: Biblioscape maintenance

Is anybody aware of a method to call a Biblioscape database rebuild allowing
some database maintenance to be routinely automated out of normal working
hours.

I am looking for something simple like a command line statement to the
rebuild.exe file or similar where the path to the database itself is also
identified within the call and which could form a .bat file to be added to
the MS scheduled tasks.

The hope would be to automate routine database maintenance actions hence
reducing the potential for any minor user created database problems building
up to a level where they could interfere with ongoing work.

The only method I am aware of at the moment is to manually start a rebuild
at the end of the working day.

Val,

Once installed, please go to the Windows task bar "Start | Programs | . " to
run it. Or you can use file manager to go to the folder where it is
installed and run it form there.

Tbytau,

The installer is provided by SyWare that comes with VisualCE. I googled
about WinMobile 5 and VisualCE, but didn't find anything useful. I don't
know much about WinMobile 5, but it is possible the old installer doesn't
work on the new system.

I've checked again: Nothing is transferred to the PocketPC. Also,
neither VisualCE nor something related to Biblioscape shows up in the
software list that's available from ActiveSync's "Software" menu. So I
guess it's somehow related to the installation process on my PC. Is
there anything that can go wrong there?

Best regards

Tbytau,

After installing BiblioPocket on your PC, the next time you do ActiveSync,
it should be transferred to your PocketPC. Since we don't have a WinMobile 5
device, I am not sure about the cause.

I have checked my PocketPC: Nothing at all seems to happen on the
device - I found no traces of a file. I also don't see ActiveSync
trying to transfer a file (BTW, I have ActiveSync 4.1 und WinMobile 5
).

Thanks for your help!
