I recall that there was a feature in New Scientist in the 1990s that
outlined a mobile phone set-up
with an earth wire and a ferrite weight etc that had been
specifically designed to negate MW field irradiation
involved in the use of.

I will have to trawl through my cuttings on EM-related aspects to
find it. You could instead try searching

Don't get left out in the cold - insulate your home
In the current climate - looking to invest in your home might seem like a crazy
idea, but there's never been a better time to think about ways to cut your
carbon footprint and slash your gas and electricity bills. The first place you
should look is your home's insulation. Acting as a giant duvet interwoven in
between your house's walls and loft, insulation serves as a buffer to keep heat
trapped in and cold out.
Without it, your home can lose half of all its heat. But that's not the only
thing. Badly insulated homes cost more to run, as they require more heat, more
frequently, to keep them at comfortable temperatures. Getting your house up to
speed won't set you back as much as you might fear. Financial help may be
available with the Government, energy suppliers and local authorities all
providing grants or offers to help you implement energy saving measures like
installing insulation.
Walled in
An un-insulated house loses around a third of its heat through the walls,
according to Energy Saving Trust, an independent, UK-based organisation offering
free advice and information for people looking to save energy, conserve water
and reduce waste. Insulating your walls could help reduce the amount of energy
you need to heat your home and save around '160 on annual fuel bills.
If your home was built after the 1920s, it's likely you have cavity walls - two
layers of wall with a small gap in between. Insulating that cavity space will
help heat your home more efficiently and reduce your CO2 emissions - one of the
biggest causes of climate change. A professional should be able to do this for
you at an approximate cost of '250 (this price is after factoring in the subsidy
available from the major energy suppliers under the Carbon Emissions Reduction
Target (CERT); normal unsubsidised installed cost is around '500). The Energy
Saving Trust also offers grants to help both tenants and landlords pay for
energy-saving moves like this one.
Look at the options
Internal wall insulation includes ready-made insulation/plaster board laminates
or wooden battens in-filled with insulation, which are attached to the walls on
the inside of your home for around '40/m2, potentially saving hundreds of pounds
off your annual energy bill.
Affordable choice
If all this seems like too much money to spend during a credit crunch though,
don't worry - there is a cheaper and easier solution, according to eco guru
Donnachadh McCarthy, author of Easy Eco Auditing: How to Make your Home and
Workplace Planet-Friendly.
"Wallpaper made of insulating material, like thermal wall insulation, is easy to
install and will make a noticeable difference to the warmth of the whole house,"
he says. Thermal wall coverings are available from most DIY stores and, at 10mm
thick, will help reduce condensation and heat loss by providing a buffer between
you and the cold, outside walls.
Looking up
You've heard that heat rises? Well, loft insulation keeps the heat that's
generated within your home from escaping through the roof. The Energy Saving
Trust suggests installing at least 270mm of the stuff to keep your house warm
and cosy throughout winter.
And most utility companies are providing schemes to upgrade or install it for
you (just check with the EST to see who's offering schemes near you). You can
save around '160 a year on your heating bills and one tonne of CO2. Be sure to
compare household utilities as well, to help save money throughout the home.
Do it yourself
Installation is relatively easy if you're the DIY type but be sure to wear
protective clothing, as most insulation is made from mineral wool, which has a
high energy cost and is an irritant to the skin and lungs.
"Ensure the loft-hatch entry door is also draught-proofed and insulated," says
Donnachadh. "Otherwise you'll lose hot air from the house straight through the
door."
Eco-friendlier alternatives to mineral wool insulation include Warmcel, made
from 100% recycled paper, and Thermafleece, made from waste sheep-shearing
products, which are also available from some DIY stores.
One last thing...
Insulation will serve to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the
summer, but it's important to remember that before you have any work carried out
on your home - even if it's you doing the work - you should have adequate home
insurance in place, should anything go wrong along the way. Then you can sit
back and enjoy your reduced carbon footprint and fuel bills without a worry in
the world!

Fredrik Soderqvist is a young researcher at Ørebro University in
Sweden who has just defended his doctoral dissertation on the effect of
mobile phone radiation on the brain.

To the Danish press, Soderqvist explains: "the increased concentration
of transtyretin we have found indicates that the brain is affected by
microwaves from mobile phones." The research shows a connection between
concentration of the protein transtyretin in the bloodstream--people who
talk often on mobile phones have a higher concentration than those who
do not...

Transtyretin is formed in the liver and helps transport A-vitamin around
the body, and also plays an important role in nervous diseases such as
Alzheimers.

It's still too early to say if any health risks are involved, but those
cautious Swedes are recommending that people, especially children,
should use headsets.

Söderqvist examined the use of wireless telephones among children and
adolescents, and asked adolescents themselves whether they thought it
was giving them health problems.

He then went on to study blood samples from adults, looking at a protein
that exists in the blood-cerebrospinal-fluid barrier, which is part of
the brain's protection against outside influences.

The study revealed an association between use of wireless telephony and
increased content of the protein transthyretin in the blood.

Söderqvist stresses that the increase needn't in itself be a cause of
concern. But since it indicates that the brain is in fact affected by
microwaves from wireless telephones, he says, there may be other - as
yet unknown - effects that may impact our health.

"We should all follow the recommendations of the Radiation Safety
Authority when it comes to using headsets and avoiding mobile phone use
when the coverage is poor," he says.

Children and adolescents who regularly use wireless telephones  reported
more health symptoms and graded their well-being lower than those who do
not use them regularly.

"The connection was strongest regarding headaches, asthmatic complaints,
and impaired concentration," says Söderqvist. "But more research is
needed to exclude the effects of other factors and sources of error,
even though it is difficult to see how this connection could be fully
explained by such factors."

Danske forskere har hidtil frikendt mobilen fra at skade hjernen. Og
producenter af mobiltelefoner kan pege på cirka 30 undersøgelser,
som viser, at mobilen slet ikke er farlig. Resultaterne fra den
internationale forskning er dog mere brogede end det, og flere nye
undersøgelser viser, at mobilen har en effekt på hjernen.


Den svenske ph.d. studerende ved Örebro Universitet Fredrik
Söderquist har fundet beviser på, at brug af mobil rent faktisk
øger niveauet af proteinet transthyretin i den væskebarriere, som
beskytter hjernen mod ydre påvirkninger. Men om forandringerne tyder
på noget godt eller skidt, kan han ikke sige noget om.

Forøgelsen af transthyretin er i sig selv ikke nødvendigvis et
problem, men det viser, at hjernen kan blive påvirket af
mobiltelefonens mikrobølger på hidtil helt ukendte måder, siger
forskeren i en pressemeddelelse.

Som en del af Fredrik Söderquists undersøgelser har han også
studeret, hvilke gener børn og unge oplever, de har i forbindelse med
brug af mobiltelefon.

»Koblingen var stærkest for hovedpine, astmatisk besvær og
koncentrationsvanskeligheder. Men der kræves mere forskning for at
udelukke, at andre faktorer har spillet ind,« siger Fredrik
Söderquist.
Lang og kortsigtet effekt
I undersøgelsen blev et tilfældigt udvalgte voksne udspurgt om
deres telefonvaner. Spørgsmålene gik på, hvor længe og hvor
ofte de talte i mobiltelefonen. Herefter analyserede forskerne deres
svar. De efterfølgende blodprøver viste, at de ivrige
mobilsnakkere havde et højt indhold af transthyretin i hjernens
såkaldte blodcerebrospinale væskebarriere.
Fredrik Söderquist undersøgte også, hvad der skete med niveauet
af proteinet hos en gruppe personer, som de lod tale i mobiltelefon i 30
minutter. Forskerne målte transthyretin-niveauet både før og
efter, og her fandt de en umiddelbar forøgelse.


Der er således både en langsigtet og kortsigtet effekt af at
snakke meget i mobil.

Söderquist siger til forskning.no, at hans resultater viser, at
mobilbrugere bør anvende høretelefoner og andet håndfrit udstyr
oftere, end de gør nu.

Det er et råd, som verdenssundhedsorganisationen WHO sandsynligvis er
enig i. Ifølge LiveScience offentliggør WHO senere på året
en videnskabelig undersøgelse, som viser, at mikrobølgerne fra
mobilen forøger risikoen for at få en svulst i hjernen.

Transthyretin (TTR) is a serum

Numerous other small molecules are known to bind in the thyroxine
