I am a final year MBA student from Department of Management Studies,
IISc.

My final project is a paper on IP issues in Bioinformatics. It covers
the history of Bioinformatics, market players, no: of patents awarded
to Bioinformatic companies, IP goals, Patent strategies and risks in
Bioinformatics industry.

My source of information for strategy and risks is annual and
quarterly reports filed with Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC).

I am searching for other comprehensive sources of information on

Only tangentially. My field is the genetics and molecular mechanisms of
muscle disease, but I've followed the fields of genomics and proteomics with
great interest. I don't think there's anyone working in molecular biology
who isn't going to be affected by the incredible pace of research in these
areas.

I'm currently looking at the possibility of using DNA microarrays to analyse
gene expression in diseased and normal muscle cells, so my main interest is
genomics, but at the same time a number of the proteins I'm working on have
incredibly complex patterns of alternative splicing, so proteomics also
plays a role.

Why were you asking, out of interest? Are you seeking advice or dispensing
it?

Mass spec analysis of proteins and 2D gel anmalysis yields large
amounts of information which can be connected to Genetic information
etc.
Hence the need for Bioinformatics.

archiving system "Worksbase" to deal with this.

The study of changes in protein expression (Proteomics) can yield
interesting new discoveries on disease mechanisms, diagnosis and
treatments.

There is currently an initiative in the UK by the Medical Research
council and the Wellcome Trust in funding research into Proteomics.

TIE UPS:
The BMM course is jointly being offered with the
hands on training at country’s leading research
facilities like Indian Institute of Chemical
Technology (IICT), Central University (HCU),
Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB)
and Center for DNA Finger Printing and
Diagnostics (CDFD). This association will provide
the students the widest exposure of the theory
and the practical on high end Computers as per
the industry requirements. We are currently
pursuing negotiations with leading companies and
Universities in the world for higher exposure of
our course and to adapt to the latest
requirements of the Bioinformatics and Molecular
Modeling Industry.
Placement Assistance:
Those who qualify in this course successfully
would either be absorbed in the company projects
or placed in companies in India or abroad after
being interviewed and selected. Please note that

Expected Minimum Qualification to Join the
Course:.

Examinations & Interview:
The Entrance Examination is required (requirement
waived for applicants with Ph.D) to be taken
after registering your applications with the
required registration Fees. A limited number of
students are recruited in the BMM course. In an
effort to admit the best-qualified candidates
with the greatest potential for success, our
Admission committee considers many factors in
evaluating applicants for admission.
Successful applicants typically should have a 4-
year graduate or postgraduate degree in molecular
biology, computer science, mathematics,
statistics, physics or a closely related
discipline. Strong computational, mathematical or
statistical training is desirable. However, all
exceptionally well-qualified applicants who
present strong evidence of research potential
will be considered for admission.

Course Fees:
The total fee is Rs.1, 15,000/- (Rupees one lakh
fifteen thousand only).
Educational Loans:
We also assist students to obtain Educational
Loans from Banks and other financial
institutions.
Course Registration Fees:
Students have to Register with an advance amount
of Rs.15,000/-.  Only qualified students in the
Entrance Examination and Interview will have to
pay Rs.50,000/- as first installment and the next
Rs.50,000 will have to paid in the next three
monthly installments of Rs.25,000/-, 15,000/- and
Rs.10,000/- respectively.
Note:  Those students who do not qualify in the
Entrance and the Interview will be returned of
their Registration fees of Rs. 15,000/-
immediately.

Hi!,

Since you have a good background in Biological sciences I think it
will be a better idea to do an MS in Comp sciences.It will give you a
better idea of both the fields( biology & comp sciences) and then you
can enter into bioinformatics with  strong computer skills as well.
However it will be a better idea to examine the course contents of
both comp sciences & bioinformatics.

I am currently at King's College London, just entering my third (and
final) year of BSc Biomedical Sciences. I am EXTREMELY interested and
excited about bioinformatics, and am now more or less picking courses
that will help me break into the field. However my question is one of
further education. Looking at job advertisments in New Scientist, on
the web, etc., it appears that they all require computing skills. Now
would it be better to do, say, an MSc in Computing (a cross-over
course, where basically you're taught how to proigram in C), or an
MSc
in bioinformatics?

Any help anyone can offer on this would be great.
