Scientific society cites ASU professor for mentoring underrepresented students

TEMPE, Ariz. – Carlos Castillo-Chavez, a professor of mathematics, statistics and life sciences at Arizona State University, is been honored once again by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), this time for his efforts to help underrepresented students earn doctoral degrees in the sciences.

Castillo-Chavez, an ASU Regents’ Professor and Joaquin Bustoz Jr. Professor of Mathematical Biology, will receive the 2007 AAAS Mentor Award during a Feb. 16 ceremony at the 2008 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston. This will be the second notable honor given to Castillo-Chavez in recent months by the prestigious international scientific society. In October, Castillo-Chavez, a mathematical theoretical biologist, was named as one of the 471 newly elected AAAS Fellows.

In announcing the mentoring award, the AAAS noted that Castillo-Chavez served as dissertation adviser for four Hispanic Americans who earned their doctorates in mathematics or the biological sciences. Another 11 Hispanic Americans whom he mentored in an undergraduate research program have gone on to earn doctorates in the biological sciences, mathematics, statistics or bioinformatics at various institutions.

For more than a decade, Castillo-Chavez also has raised money for and run a summer research program – the Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute – aimed at encouraging Hispanic American and American Indian undergraduate students to enter doctoral programs with an emphasis on mathematical or computational biology. As a result of his summer research program, 59 Hispanic Americans and American Indians have gone on to graduate programs. As the recommendation from the award selection committee notes, Castillo-Chavez ‘s work “has the potential to change the face of Ph.D. scientists who are researchers in the mathematics and computational biology area.”

Castillo-Chavez, who specializes in the study of disease evolution, earned his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin and spent 18 years at Cornell University before joining the faculty at Arizona State in 2004. He has published nearly 160 scientific articles and has authored or co-authored nine books.

In a letter supporting Castillo-Chavez’s nomination for the mentor award, Simon Levin, Moffett Professor of Biology at Princeton University, said that Castillo-Chavez has been a national leader in mentoring students.

“They are all fiercely loyal to Carlos and appreciative of what he has done for them,” Levin wrote. “But perhaps more importantly, they are as exciting and excited a group of young scientists as I have ever met. Carlos has managed to transfer much of his own enthusiasm for science and mathematics to them, and it is impressive indeed.”

Several students who studied under Castillo-Chavez submitted letters in support of his nomination for the award, including one from a Hispanic American woman who said his summer program for undergraduates had changed her life. “I am the first one in my family to get an education beyond high school,” she wrote. She said Castillo-Chavez “gave me the confidence needed not only to dream big but also to achieve those big dreams through hard work and dedication.” She mentioned two other students in the program who benefited from Castillo-Chavez’s constant encouragement: a young man who grew up in one of the most violent neighborhoods in Puerto Rico and went on to receive a doctoral degree from Cornell University; and a Hispanic American woman, the oldest of eight children, who had to work throughout her undergraduate years and spent four hours commuting to class each day. She went on to graduate school.

The AAAS Mentor Award honors those who have mentored and guided significant numbers of underrepresented students to earn a doctoral degree in the sciences, as well as scholarship, activism and community-building on behalf of underrepresented groups. According to the AAAS, this award is directed toward individuals in the early or mid-career stage who have mentored students for fewer than 25 years. The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science. It’s mission is to “advance science and serve society.” The nonprofit AAAS was founded in 1848. Additional information is at: www.aaas.org/aboutaaas/awards

Helios Education Foundation Invests $6.5 Million in New Partnership With TGen

Partnership Extends Funding for Bioscience Summer Internship

01-29-2008

PHOENIX, AZ -- Helios Education Foundation today awarded $6.5 million to the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) as part of a new partnership that extends the Helios Scholars Program at TGen for the next 25 years. The program helps cultivate new scientific and technical talent across the state of Arizona.

"Helios Education Foundation's commitment to develop a long term partnership with TGen for student training is an incredible boost for Arizona's future in the biosciences," Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano said. "Arizona is poised to become a world leader in cutting-edge medical education and health care, but only if we provide the necessary training and mentorship. These types of public-private partnerships hold the key to what must be the central goal of an Arizona education: giving our students the skills they need to succeed in the high-tech, high-knowledge world of the 21st century."

The Helios Scholars Program at TGen is an annual summer internship program for 45 high school, undergraduate and graduate students in Arizona. Interns receive a stipend, are paired with a TGen scientist/mentor and are actively engaged in research projects in disorders as diverse as cancer, diabetes, autism and Alzheimer's disease. The eight-week program supports students from all backgrounds in their efforts to develop foundational skills as they pursue careers in science or medical-related fields.

"Creating opportunities in education that have math and science at their core is very important to Helios Education Foundation," said the Foundation's Chairman Vince Roig. "We are excited to invest $6.5 million in this innovative and unique program at TGen because it opens new doors into the world of the biosciences for Arizona students. We're even more excited to be investing in a long-term partnership that will impact the future growth and development of the sciences in Arizona."

Helios Education Foundation provided funding for TGen's 2007 summer internship program, which included a stipend for students. This led to a sizable increase in the number of qualified student applications from around the State. The $6.5 million endowment enables TGen to extend its competitive internship program for 25 years and provide a stipend and other support for students. The Helios Scholars Program at TGen also encourages student diversity, with upwards of 20 percent of the interns coming from underrepresented populations.

"We are excited to continue and expand our partnership with the Helios Education Foundation," said TGen president, Dr. Jeffrey Trent. "Our shared commitment to training the next generation of researchers provides an unparalleled opportunity for Arizona and those students seeking hands-on training to augment their classroom experience. For many of these students, this experience will prove to be a defining moment in focusing their career choices across the biosciences."

Applications are now available on-line at the TGen website: http://www.tgen.org/intern. Interns must be a resident of Arizona or a full-time student at an Arizona-based high school, accredited college or university. The application deadline is March 14. Attributes that investigators consider in selecting students include a strong desire to conduct independent research, interests, academic achievement, curiosity, ambition, and aptitude for working independently and with a team. The application process is competitive, but many different backgrounds and abilities are represented among the students selected.

In addition to the stipends, Helios Education Foundation and TGen recognize each student as a Helios Scholar. The endowment also funds an end-of-the-summer symposium where students present their work to their peers, TGen staff, family and guests. Additionally, the endowment provides six merit-based scholarships and supports several extra curricular activities to encourage student interaction and learning.

TGen's past summer interns boast an array of impressive accomplishments, including publishing scientific abstracts and peer-reviewed articles, gaining acceptance into medical and graduate school and winning scholarships and prizes. In 2005, TGen interns Albert Shieh and Anne Lee took first place in the team category at the 2005-2006 Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology. The interns split a $100,000 scholarship.

Subject: Prostate Cancer

12-11-2007

PHOENIX, AZ, DECEMBER 11, 2007-Results from two genome-wide association

studies have identified a genetic variant of the DAB2IP gene that is

associated with the risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Research teams from

the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), Wake Forest University

School of Medicine, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and Johns

Hopkins Medical Institutions made the discovery jointly.

Researchers suspect that the DAB2IP gene is involved in tumor suppression,

suggesting that this protective mechanism goes awry in men with the variant

form. The finding, reported today in the Journal of the National Cancer

Institute, might one day help doctors tailor treatment based on a patient's

genetic makeup.

Both genetic and environmental factors are important in the development of

prostate cancer, and it is only recently that some of the consistent genetic

factors have been identified. It is not clear at present whether men who are

genetically prone to the disease tend to have more aggressive disease than

men who are not.

"Because there is no way to tell whether a person has or will have the

aggressive version versus the mild version of prostate cancer, both forms

are treated the same-with radiotherapy or surgery to remove the prostate

gland. The identification of this genetic variant could lead to better risk

assessment for aggressive disease, providing doctors with more information

on how to best treat men who may be diagnosed with prostate cancer," said

John Carpten, Ph.D., director of TGen's Division of Integrated Cancer

Genomics and senior author of the paper.

Analysis of 3,159 samples led the researchers to conclude that men

possessing the DAB2IP variant appear to carry a nearly 36 percent increased

risk of advanced prostate cancer.

"In most cases, prostate cancer is not a death sentence, but it would be

ideal to identify men with an aggressive form of disease," said Jianfeng Xu,

M.D., Dr.PH, a senior author and a professor of epidemiology and cancer

biology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. "Our finding suggests

the possibility of developing a blood test to gauge disease type so doctors

could decide if more aggressive treatment is needed."

The researchers screened DNA samples from 500 men with advanced prostate

cancer and 500 healthy men of the same age in Sweden. This DNA screening

examined the entire genome for more than 550,000 single nucleotide

polymorphisms (SNPs), which are locations on chromosomes where a single unit

of DNA, or genetic material, may vary from one person to the next. The team

then focused on 60,000 SNPs that have also been evaluated by a similar study

conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) called Cancer Genetic

Markers of Susceptibility (CGEMS). Evaluation of these 60,000 SNPs

identified seven SNPs that appeared to be linked to disease aggressiveness.

Additionally, researchers screened another 1,242 men with advanced disease

and 917 healthy men who were part of a research project at Johns Hopkins

Medical Institutions. This group included both African and European

Americans. Through these multiple screenings, the researchers found that the

variant form of DAB2IP is associated with an increased risk of having

aggressive disease.

Senior authors Henrik Gronberg, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of epidemiology

from Karolinska Institute, and William Isaacs, Ph.D., a professor of urology

at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, both agree that the findings were

possible because advances in technology allow researchers to take a more

systematic approach to looking at the entire genome. Instead of solely

studying genes that they suspect may be related to disease susceptibility,

they can study the entire genome and look for associations.

"By using state-of-the-art technologies, we can find genes that were not

previously known or thought to be involved with disease risk," said David

Duggan, Ph.D., an Investigator in TGen's Genetic Basis of Human Disease

Division. "If we can then learn more about the proteins they produce, it

could lead to new understanding about disease mechanisms and new

treatments."

Co-first authors on the paper were TGen's Duggan and Siqun Lilly Zheng,

M.D., from Wake Forest.

About TGen

The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), a non-profit 501(c)(3)

organization, is focused on developing earlier diagnoses and smarter

treatments. Translational genomics research is a relatively new field

employing innovative advances arising from the Human Genome Project and

applying them to the development of diagnostics, prognostics and therapies

for cancer, neurological disorders, diabetes and other complex diseases.

TGen's research is based on personalized medicine and the institute plans to

accomplish its goals through robust and disease-focused research.
