Hello everyone.

At long last I am now able to announce to you that Yancey County will soon have
a world class public astronomical observatory and star park! This project is no
longer just a possibility, it is happening. Work has begun and the plan is
proceeding. 12 to 15 months from now we'll have a fantastic mountaintop roll
off roof observatory building worthy of the custom built 34" (0.86 meter)
diameter observatory telescope inside! Adjacent to the observatory will be a
star park – a place to host star parties and allow visitors to set up their own
telescopes. Surrounding this will be a series of themed gardens with walking
trails. We'll have permanent restroom facilities, a warm room, gift shop, and
more. With time we'll add a secondary observatory with a medium sized
telescope, a solar observatory, and several smaller observatories

Dr. John Boyd, President of Mayland Community College, has taken an interest in
this project. He understands how beneficial this will be for Mayland and the
entire community, so he is 100% on board with this, and he's an expert in the
funding and planning of large projects. We're very fortunate to have his
expertise available to us. He's absolutely certain that funding will be
available to complete the entire project, and he's already arranged funding for
the mirror deposit. So in about 2 weeks we'll be placing our order for the 34"
primary mirror and 7" secondary flat, which will require a non refundable
deposit up front of about $12,000. The mirrors will take 8 to 12 months to
grind, test, aluminize, and deliver to the telescope manufacturer. Then it will
take about 3 more months to complete the telescope and deliver it to us.

Energy Xchange is now being managed by Mayland Community College, and will be
expanded and improved, and will include a wider array of artists and art forms.
This change is already underway. Our observatory/star park and Energy Xchange
will be merged into a single entity, a single destination with a wide range of
available activities. We've had some good laughs about the landfill site, but
as it turns out the fact that we are reclaiming a landfill area is a big "plus"
for getting funding.

The observatory will be at the extreme northwest end of the upper landfill area,
atop a small knoll with a near perfect view of the sky. It is a fantastic spot
for an observatory. If you have the time you should go check it out. Go on Hwy
80N to the old landfill, then follow the signs for Energy Xchange, turn right on
the last dirt road before Energy Xchange parking lot, go ¼ mile and park next to
the big green dirt scraping machine and you'll see the pasture (landfill area)
in front of you. This will be the main star park and star party area, and this
is where we'll have our June 5th Venus Transit Party! Walk to the far end of it
and you'll be at the observatory site.

It's still hard to believe this is really happening – that we'll have the
largest telescope in NC and one of the largest in the southeast US. We'll see
things none of us ever imagined! I'll have more details soon, and I'll let you
know when we actually start placing orders. Bob

Hey Bob,

Very good news, indeed!  I was out at Arbuckle today and almost turned up to check out the site, but time constraints stopped me.  How is the road?  Can a small, lowish car go up there, or is a truck needed?  My schedule is finally clearing up for the summer, so I'll take a trip out there next week.  I'll also be able to devote more time to really designing the website (it's sort of a clutter now), and hopefully there'll be many clear nights for observing!

Keep us up to date!

You won't need a truck, the road isn't bad.  Check it out!

I checked some of the YouTube tutorials and they helped. Most of them seem to
be for the older versions of the software. I ran a 5 frame stack with 14
alignment points and it ran overnite and was still running in the morning. It
showed active in the task manager but then when I went to kill the task it said
"not responding". Just wish there was a good list of steps to follow 1. 2. 3.
Ugh

The Seven Mile Ridge Astronomers have invited BRAG to their open house next
Saturday night, the 19th. They have 3 new observatories there to show us (2
domes and a roll off roof). This will be a great time to meet them and some of
their astronomer friends from the Catawba Valley Astronomical Society. Their
observatory site is on Seven Mile Ridge, near Celo. If you'd like to attend
please respond here, they'd like to know how many of us are coming. I can
provide directions to the site if needed.
Thanks...

I checked some of the YouTube tutorials and they helped. Most of them seem to be for the older versions of the software. I ran a 5 frame stack with 14 alignment points and it ran overnite and was still running in the morning. It showed active in the task manager but then when I went to kill the task it said "not responding". Just wish there was a good list of steps to follow 1. 2. 3. Ugh

If you want to bring a telescope you can.  They'll have their scopes in the observatories, and they have plenty of room outside to set up more scopes.  You won't need anything else, they're having a cookout so there's be food and drinks.

With some much appreciated input from Bob, I've updated the website with current
event and planning information. I have also added a link at the bottom for
event images. If anyone has any pictures they want to submit from star parties,
feel free to send them, and I'll get them up asap. I also want to offer member
pages. So, if anyone is interested in having their own image page, let me know.
If you have a link to a site you already own, I am happy to include it on the
members' page (which I have not yet published, but will soon).

This is still a WIP, so any input is appreciated :)

Thanks!!!

I'm not familiar with the B&L800, but I'm jealous of your Canon!  My old 8mp 300D isn't even supported by Canon any more and I have to use win xp (which I like, but my laptop is Win7)...

If you're still having trouble with Registax, you can send me your video file and I'll retrace my steps to stack and process for you with a step by step.  I'd do it with mine, but I deleted the video...

Thanks for the offer, I might take you up on it.  Per my Canon I love it.  The Bausch is really old but is still good .
