I did a brief show and tell about the Bing Maps Silverlight Control on Monday. You can discover more here and here about the control and the web service.

The control itself is pretty big, but it does provide easy access to map functionality. You do have to register and get a key to use the Bing web services. I believe registered developers get 500,000 hits/year free, or something like that. The service itself, for each click, returns latitude, longitude, and, if available, altitude in a location object. I think it can also give up the city, district, country, and street address, but my quick search did not find the relevant links.

I use the control along with the (undocumented last time I checked) Google weather web service in a half-finished silverlight weather app. The undone part is animating the weather data.

Hi All,

Thanks to Gary Chin, we finished Silverlight 4 optimization last night, the last topic of our Silverlight cycle. We’re now ready to pursue proficiency of a hot JavaScript library, jQuery.

Starting this coming Monday (6/13), we will tackle jQuery with the help of Manning Press’ jQuery in Action, second edition http://www.amazon.com/jQuery-Action-Second-Bear-Bibeault/dp/1935182323

On Monday we will begin covering core jQuery, cover some basic JavaScript, and chapters 1 and 2 of the text, Introduction and Selectors.

I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Sometimes there are several signup sheets. Look for the one that says "dot net". Afterwards, take the elevator up one floor to the first floor, go toward the front of the building through double glass doors, and angle to the right to the Abigail Adams room. A receptionist will be on the left, just inside the door in case you have any questions.

You can park in the garage for $10 if you can't find parking somewhere else. If you try to park in front of the building for the whole meeting, you might get a ticket. A subway station (Kendall Square, on the Red Line) isn't too far away.

I've been to several meetings now and can highly recommend them.

Usually members of the jQuery team are presenting or present.

Lots of other interesting javascript topics happening as well...

For those who are interested in learning more on jQuery, there is a user group - http://www.meetup.com/jQuery-Boston/

Typically, their meetups are held on the first Wednesday of every month at the Bocoup Loft, a 5 minute walk from South Station, and we have plenty of sponsor-provided beer and pizza.

I personally have not attend this jQuery User Group.

Hi All,

We’re going to be covering chapters 5 and 6 of jQuery in Action this coming Monday (6/27) as we return to our room at NERD. We’ll be covering animation and utility functions.

Here’s the schedule for the remainder of the jQuery syllabus:

July 4th  holiday.

July 11: Finish up jQuery Core, cover chapters 7 & 8; Expand your reach by extending jQuery and Talk to the server with Ajax

July 18: We begin the second part of the book: JQuery UI, introducing UI themes and effects (chapter 9) and UI mouse interactions (chapter 10)

July 25 – jQuery UI widgets: Beyond HTML controls

If all goes well, well begin our focus on MVC in August!

As an aside, those of you interested in ASP.NET 4, Apress has their “deal of the day” today Pro ASP.NET4 in C# 2010 4th edition for $10. http://www.apress.com/9781430225294  This is an excellent reference for anyone doing serious asp.net development.

Hi Everyone,

We’re just finishing up our cycle on jQuery with coverage of jQuery UI widgets and mouse interaction next week (August 15).

That frees us up to begin the complementary topic of asp.net MVC 3.  We’ll be using Pro APS.NET MVC 3 Framework, by Steven Sanderson and Adam Freeman, from Apress. Amazon has it for $28.27.

Best,

-          Abe
