I trust
that everyone has had a wonderful holiday season and is psyched to get serious
this New Year.
Now that
we're well rested, it's time to get rolling again. Let's meet on Monday January
8 at the MS Waltham office at 6:30 to discuss strategies and direction. If
anyone has come across any good material, please bring it along. I'm proposing
that we meet every Monday to keep the momentum going.

Hi Marc,
We’re
here. Interesting that you posted this. It’s time for us to pick a direction.
We’ve been waiting for the new Kalani book to come out on the .NET Framework,
but it’s six months behind the original date (I’d say at this point they’re
probably waiting for the new year so it’ll have a longer shelf life?).
Gary
suggested that maybe we do a stint with Sql Server development? I’ve been
playing around with the some of the new functionality in the 2.0 Framework and
won’t mind continuing down that path if we can find appropriate material.
What does
everybody think?

I'm more interested in the .Net 2.0 than the SQL Server but I would still come along. I haven't done any certification exams so I would be more interseted in something more focused on that just so i could get an idea of the level of these exams.

As I said, material is an issue. Actually, I’d taking a great (read overwhelming amount of work ;-) ) C# / Framework 2.0 course at Harvard extension and we’re using Andrew Troelsen’s “Pro C# 2005 and the .NET 2.0 Platform”. It’s excellent, but quite dense, and as Miriam brought up, does not have test question (it’s not certification oriented, but you’d get a high level of competence by going through the book and the code samples) Let’s get feedback from everyone…

I think we should look at it. IMHO MS training
kits have been REALLY dry, basically a list of lists. This one could be
different? I’ve been much happier with the que series, but don’t
know when they’re coming out. I still think that the Framework 2.0 SDK
might be the definitive reference material here.

My question is, how far into studying for the current exam are you
and/or does it make sense for me to jump in at this point or should I
wait until you are finished studying for this exam and join in when the
next one starts?
Thanks for any help and/or insights!

Abe passed on a request to me to schedule weekly meetings with Microsoft and I have done so. Now the schedule with the MS office is for the group to have the EBC room every Monday, barring any conflicts such as we have had a few times. So starting from the next meeting, Monday June 19th, it will meet every week.
There was also a discussion about diverting from the specific exam focused meetings for a few sessions until the 2.0 material is available. That will be a good opportunity to get the firm foundation necessary to making sense of the other material. Some topics might be inheritance/interfaces, delegates, generics etc. This should be discussed at the meting this coming Monday.
Today at TechEd I met the company rep who handles the books that we have been using. I will contact her and try to get some kind of deal going. I have known the overall rep for AW for some time and he is a great guy, so we should have some luck. I will pass the contact information on to Abe to follow up on, and he will also have the information for the new MS rep handling the certification program.
I think it is now time to deprecate the Google group so we will no longer use it for the group. From now on all communication, etc., will be done via the Yahoo group. If you want to continue being a part of the group please register at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bostondotnetcertification/ if you want to continue being included in the group's communications.
The final change is that I will no longer be a part of the group, except perhaps in spirit. I am moving this weekend to Vermont so can no longer be as involved as I have been. I appreciate all the help you all have provided to me in getting the certifications that I have, and wish you all the best in your own individual endeavors. I will continue to receive the emails from the group so look forward to all of your successes.

What exam should we target next?
I would suggest that a good candidate is 70-536,
since all the new developer certifications seem to require it.
There seem to be no books yet addressing 70-536 in
particular, so we would have to proceed from the list of topics on http://www.microsoft.com/learning/exams/70-536.asp.
The presenter of a section could partly describe the highlights of
a section, and partly describe where in MSDN or in books more
information is to be found.

Welcome. We are a free, totally volunteer peer group formed as a study group to pass Microsoft Certification exams.
We meet every other week at space donated at Microsoft's New England Headquarters at 201 Jones Road in Waltham MA (directions ).
We are currently working on Exam 70-320 Using QUE's (Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Visual C# .NET and the .NET Framework) by Amit and Priti Kalani.
(note: There's a Training Guide that we're using and an exam cram version )
