Chicamuxen Wildlife Area, Charles Co., Md., near Indian Head (Sat. Aug. 16,
11:00 am - 4:00 pm). Coastal Plain habitats, including a sea-level,
freshwater-tidal hardwood swamp with Magnolia virginiana. Larry Morse, trip
leader.
This area has mostly good trails, but expect mud and shallow water (and deeper
for those who want to explore). A creek ford may be deeper after rain. Hiking
distance about three miles round-trip. Bring lunch.
Directions: From Washington, take the Anacostia Freeway (I-295) south to the
Indian Head Highway southbound [one of the choices at the 4-way fork at the
Beltway], or from Alexandria or elsewhere, exit the Beltway at Md 210 south.
Take 210 about 17 miles south of the Beltway, then left onto Md 225, continuing
on Md 225 about two miles to Md 224 south, just after Mattawoman Creek. Turn
right, then go about 7 miles to the Chicamuxen Church (on right) [6255
Chicamuxen Road, Chicamuxen, Md.], then about ¼ mile further to Wildlife Area
parking, on right, before creek. Meet there.
