genetic reason why. Hear Alan Whittemore, PhD., research taxonomist with

U.S. National Arboretum, discuss oaks and learn about their wanton ways of
hybridizing.
The program is free and open to the public.

1) The Washington Academy of Sciences is expanding their "STARS" (Science
and Technology Aptitude Recognition for Schools) youth-in-science
outreach program, and would like to hear from people willing to judge
one (or more) school science project contests. Typically this will
involve about a 4-hour commitment at a participating school (in the DC,
MD or Northern VA area) sometime in the January 15-March 31, 2005 time
frame. If you are interested, please e-mail Paul Hazan
(pmhazan@...) a one-liner by December 15th 2004, saying "I would
like to be included in the WAS Judges' Roster,"and include your name,
e-mail, address and telephone number. You will be notified as soon as
the schools notify him of their event dates. If you have already signed
up, you do NOT need to respond again.
2) Doug Ripley would like to have material pertaining to Society
activities in the years 1977-1990 for the Archives. Our archives cover
the period from the establishment of the Society (1902) through Larry
Skog's presidency (1976) very well, and the period of Sam Rainey and
Doug's terms as archivist (1991 to date), but there is a gap in our
documentation from 1977 to 1990; anyone who has material from this
period, please send Doug a copy for the archive.

Thank you for continuing to keep me informed of the societies activities
and forgive me for my long absence from the meetings. I have spent the
last two years organizing and directing on-the-ground interdisciplinary
native plant conservation programs for the National Park Service in the
American Southwest and Pacific Coast Regions. These activities have taken
up all my free time, and so have been out of touch with most of my
colleagues and friends here in D.C.
Please let folks know I miss them and the meetings and am especially sorry
that I will be out of town for the upcoming flora symposium. However, I
thought you would be pleased to know that I have been appointed
Artist-in-the-Park at the Mojave National Preserve for the second spring
season in a row. In addition to my duties making botanical illustrations
in the field, I will also be teaching two botanical illustration at the
Desert Studies Center in Zzyzx, CA. These weekend-long extension courses
are presented by California State University, San Bernardino and the
University of California, Riverside, and can be taken for credit or
non-credit. If anyone is interested in joining me for a great (and
relatively inexpensive) "spring break" please let me know. Please let
others know! It is a new program, so we could use all the help we can get
putting the word out.

shuttle between WAS headquarters and the banquet facilities at Meadowlark
Botanical Gardens if 25 people signed up for the bus. If we don't receive a
few more sign-ups by close of business today, we will have to cancel the
transportation. So -- if you plan to take to bus to the banquet, please let
us know ASAP. (Details are below).

Brief report by Dan Nicolson about the Bear Island fieldtrips:
1. The first trip (2 Apr) was rough. Only three went. We only saw about 7
things in flower and got well and truly soaked.
2. The 2nd trip (9 Apr) was a classic (maybe 20 people?) and just short of
50 species in flower. Even one new record (Erythronium albidum).

Environmental Impact Statement on a Scotts-Monsanto petition to deregulate

WEED WARRIOR TRAINING FOR VOLUNTEERS IN THE POTOMAC GORGE
Want to learn more about invasive plants? Have a yearning to get out and
help? If you can commit a few hours each month to get out on your own and
control invasive plants in the Potomac Gorge, then this training is for
you!
The Potomac Gorge, from Great Falls to Georgetown, is one of the most
biologically diverse areas in the nation, with an incredible concentration
of rare plants and rare plant communities. Non-native invasive plants are
one of the biggest threats to plant diversity in this area, and you can
help us control these exotic invaders!
In order to work on your own on National Park lands, we will need to ensure
that you know the plants you are treating and their look-alike natives and
how to best treat those plants. We also want you to be safe and have fun!
Training topics will include:
The problem invasive exotic plants pose to the unique biodiversity of the
Potomac Gorge.
Identification of a dozen invasive plants that you may encounter, and how
to idenitify them and tell them from their native look-alikes.
How to best control these invasives.
Navigating your site, and paperwork related to volunteering for The Nature
Conservancy and National Park Service.
When you have completed the training, you will be empowered as a VIP
(Volunteer in Parks) to control invasive plants on National Park land
between Great Falls and Georgetown. You will be assigned an area convenient
for you, get a personal orientation to that site, and will be able to
control plants on your own flexible schedule. In return, we ask that you
fill out all necessary paperwork, work a few hours each month in the Gorge,
and report back to us each time you treat plants.

Monday, April 25, 5-7:30pm in Bethesda TNC offices
Saturday, April 30, 10-4pm field session in Potomac Gorge
Monday, May 2, 5-7:30 in Bethesda TNC offices

Plant I.D. and Rescue
Saturday, June 11, 2005 Noon
Members of Joe Pye and AHG, friends and family are invited to a plant
rescue and I.D. at Watkins Farm in Clarksburg, Maryland. Directions
follow. We will meet on Saturday, June 11, 2005 at 12 noon until however
long we decide. It might be nice to go for a meal afterwards!
The terrain is woodland and lowlands. Please bring shovels, knives,
trowels, gloves, plastic garbage bags with handles, five gallon buckets,
drinking water, field guides, insect repellant, cameras, log books, and
anything else you can think of that might be useful.
This is an exploration...I dont know what we will find.

Directions: From the DC Beltway (Route 495):
22701 Newcut Road
Clarksburg, MD
1) Go to the Maryland or Virginia spur to the 270 Extension and follow the
spur north to where the two spurs joins together.
2) Continue north on 270 for about 12.7 miles (Express Lanes).
3) Exit onto Father Hurley Blvd. Exit 16. (Route 27) toward Damascus
4) Go about 0.9 miles to the second stoplight.
5) Turn left onto 355 North (Frederick Rd.).
6) Go about 1.5 miles (past Greenridge Baptist Church and to the bottom of
the hill).
7) Turn right on Newcut Rd. (the road makes a sharp turn to the right and
goes over a small bridge).
8) Go about 0.8 miles to the gravel driveway, which is marked by a white
mailbox (22701 on the mailbox and the tree).
9) Turn right into the driveway
10) Go about 0.3 miles to the house, pass the first barn to the right
11) Park by the second barn or by the house
