Fieldtrip to Chapman Forest on Saturday, December 22, 2007

Winter Solstice Walk at Chapman Forest, Charles County

Leaders: Rod Simmons and Meghan Tice (Co-sponsored by the Botanical
Society of Washington)

Date: Saturday, December 22, 2007

Time: 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

The old-age section of Chapman Forest is always a great place to celebrate
the winter season and see a remarkable diversity of native trees. We will
mainly walk the lowland areas along the Potomac River below the ravines
and bluffs from historic Mount Aventine to Glymont. This area along the
river is a fascinating and regionally unique meeting ground for plants
with a primary range in the inner piedmont and mountains and those of the
coastal plain. Along the way we will see many species of oaks, including
ancient pagoda, chinquapin, and northern red oaks, 4 hickory species, 2
hackberry species, basswood, white and pumpkin ash, ancient sassafras,
Virginia hop-hornbeam, bladdernut, wafer ash, southern bayberry, and many
others. We will also look for butternut and Shumard's oak. We should also
see a variety of birds such as red-headed woodpeckers, wood ducks, and
bald eagles.

Directions: Take Indian Head Highway (Rt. 210) south from Capital Beltway
(495). Proceed south on Rt. 210 for app. 22 miles. Continue on Rt. 210
past Bryans Road intersection (McDonald's, Burger King, and shopping
center on right - what a surprise) and start looking for Chapman Landing
Road on right. Take half right on Chapman Landing Road and proceed a
couple of miles to entrance to Mount Aventine on right. Park and meet in
parking lot.

Bring: Wear sturdy shoes. Bring lunch, snacks, and water.

Note: Moderate walk, mostly on trails. Cancelled in the event of pouring
rain, sleet, or snow.

Contact: Rod, cecropia13@... or 301-809-0139.

The Washington Academy of Sciences and its affiliated societies (of which
the BSW is one) present Capital Science 2008 to be held March 29 30, 2008
at the National Science Foundation in Arlington.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 29-30, 2008, The Washington Academy of
Sciences and its Affiliated Societies will hold the third event of the
biennial pan-Affiliate Conference Series, Capital Science 2008. This event
will take place at the Conference Facility of the National Science
Foundation in Arlington, VA, within a block of the Ballston Metro Stop.

With about 20 of our Affiliated Societies participating, the Conference
will serve as an umbrella for scientific presentations, seminars,
tutorials, and talks. These pan-Affiliate Conferences clearly demonstrate
that the Washington, DC area is not only the political capital of the
country but, in many respects, the nation's intellectual capital -- with
several major universities and government laboratories that are the homes
of an astonishing number of Nobel Prize Laureates.

In addition to the sessions organized by the various Affiliated Societies,
the weekend-long event will feature three major addresses and three
plenary sessions.

This year the BSW will be working jointly with three other societies to
present its two day session.

Further details at: http://www.botsoc.org/CapSci2008.pdf

More information will be coming soon.

Subject: (BSW) BSW Field Trips 2008 -- Suggestions Welcome
pvasshep
Send Email Send Email

BSW Members:

In one of her first acts as our new President, Carol Kelloff appointed our BSW
Field Trip Committee for 2008:
Pat Ford, Rod Simmons, and myself (Larry Morse) as chair

We have several suggestions for 2008 already, but would welcome others, either
places that you recommend or have heard about, or particular species or habitats
that you would like to see.

Some day-trip possibilities being considered:

Bear Island (Potomac Gorge), early spring
Susquehanna Gorge, Harford Co., Md., mid-spring (esp. for Trillium flexipes)
Chapman's Forest, tidal Potomac (old-growth trees)
Canoe trip on tidal Mattawoman (vic. Indian Head)
Ptilimnium (Harperella) somewhere (probably Sideling Hill Creek in western
Maryland)
Easy-going Fall trip somewhere nearby for kids, old-timers, and everyone else
(Ideas,anyone?)

As a possible weekend excursion for 2008, Bill McAvoy (Del. Nat. Heritage
Program) has offered to host us in "Inland Delmarva," the area between the
Chesapeake Bay shore and the beaches, dunes, and marshes of the Atlantic Coast.
The globally rare but locally frequent seaside alder (Alnus maritima) would be a
highlight. Members: Sound interesting? Other ideas for a weekend trip, for
2008 or some future year?

Also, note that Carol has clarified that the Dec. 22, 2007, Maryland Native
Plant Society field trip to Chapman's is not being co-sponsored by BSW (contrary
to wording in some earlier announcements); MNPS welcomes BSW members to this
event.

A Natural History Approach to Plant Conservation,

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 7:30 at Green spring gardens
Natural history has always been the foundation of conservation
biology. For centuries, botanists collected specimens in the field to
understand plant diversity. Now that many habitats are threatened, botanists
have turned their focus to conservation and, increasingly, they look to the
collections of herbaria and botanical gardens for insight on developing
assessment and management programs. This talk will explore the value of natural
history collections in light of contemporary biodiversity studies.
Gary A. Krupnick is the head of the Plant Conservation Unit in the
Department of Botany, National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian
Institution in Washington, D.C. At NMNH, Dr. Krupnick coordinates activities and
research that focus on plant conservation, biodiversity hotspots, and endangered
plant species. Dr. Krupnick is the co-editor of the book "Plant Conservation: A
Natural History Approach" (University of Chicago Press; 2005), and the editor of
two newsletters: the "Biological Conservation Newsletter" and the "Plant Press"
(newsletter of the U.S. National Herbarium).

Directions to Green Spring Gardens: From Interstate 395, exit at Route 236 West
(Little River Turnpike); turn right at Braddock Road and go one block north to
park entrance: 4603 Green Spring Rd., Alexandria.

Topic: A Natural History Approach to Plant Conservation

Natural history has always been the foundation of conservation
biology. For centuries, botanists collected specimens in the field to
understand plant diversity. Now that many habitats are threatened,
botanists have turned their focus to conservation and, increasingly, they
look to the collections of herbaria and botanical gardens for insight on
developing assessment and management programs. This talk will explore the
value of natural history collections in light of contemporary biodiversity
studies.

In honor of April Fools' Day.....

The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

In 1957 the respected BBC news show Panorama announced
that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the
dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti
crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants
pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were
taken in. Many called the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their
own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC diplomatically replied that they
should "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for
the best."

Hi, all. Jim Dronenburg here.

This isn't exactly botany, but Dr. Richard Bittner, author of
Conifers for American Gardens, will speak at the Beltsville Behnke's at
one o'clock PM, Saturday, April 5th. He is a great speaker and will
absolutely make you think of conifers in a new light. He will also be
selling & signing his book. I've heard him speak (last year at
Swarthmore) and got him down here....

From there, a group of people (my garden club and anyone else who
wants) will take a few minutes to terrorize Behnke's and then go out to
Susanna Farms in Boyds, MD for a tour there, starting at three pm. They
specialize in both Unusual Conifers, and Conifers of Unusual Size. Also
Japanese maples...I'll try to get the group herded there by three PM.

To get to Behnke's in Beltsville, take your best route to the north
side of the Washington Beltway, and exit on Md. Rte 1 North. Go - THIS
IS A GUESS-about two and a half miles, you will pass a Costco on the
right and the next light should be Powder Mill Road. Go through that,
and through the next light, and then Behnke's is on the left.

The meeting is in the 2nd floor of the northmost building of
Behnke's. If lost, ask for the Dawn Rose room. Enter the second floor
via some cast iron stairs on the west side of the building.

To get to Susanna Farm from Behnke's:

Leave B's, turn right(south) on Rte 1 and retrace your path to the
Beltway, and take the beltway West. Exit the beltway on I-270. Go
north on 270 to exit 18 (Rte 121, Boyds/Clarksburg). At end of exit,
turn towards Boyds on Clarksburg Road. Continue until the road ends.
Turn right- the road immediately becomes White Ground Road. Stay on
White Ground Road for approximately 3.4 miles. Susanna Farm Nursery is
on the right. ( http://www.susannafarmnursery.com )

As the representative of the BSW to the WAS Board, I am very happy to inform you
that Dan Nicolson will
receive the “Award for Distinguished Career in Science” by the
Washington Academy of Sciences during the annual banquet of the Academy, to be
held on May 6 at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. Stan Shetler
nominated him and Alain Touwaide endorsed the nomination. For your information,
Stan and
Alain themselves were awarded for their scientific contribution by the Academy,
in 2002 and 2003, respectively.

About the Award to be presented to Dan, I quote from the
nomination:

He is best known worldwide for his expertise in the
arcane subject of botanical nomenclature, the science of naming plants, which is
governed by the intricate and complex rules set forth in the International Code
of Botanical Nomenclature. Serving in effect as a botanical lawyer he interprets
the rules and often adjudicates disputes for colleagues, authoritatively
rendering nomenclatural opinions that others follow. For more than 50 years he
has participated in the work of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy
(IAPT), the governing body for nomenclature, and has held virtually every
position in that organization, including Co-Editor of the Code and President.

This lifetime achievement comes with the one Dan
recently received at Harvard University, where he has just been recognized as
“Botanist of the Year, 2008”.

Members of the Society who would like to celebrate
him on this special occasion can register for the banquet at:
http://www.washacadsci.org Email: banquet@... to say, it
would be just great if colleagues
and friends would come to congratulate him and enjoy with him and the other
scientists who will be awarded in different
disciplines this exciting event!
Thanks and best wishes, and I look forward very much to seeing you at Meadowlark
on May 6th,
Emanuela Appetiti

The Parkfairfax Native Plant Sale is next Saturday, April 26, from 9
a.m. to 2 p.m. (This will be our 10th sale! Now regularly hosting
over 10 vendors, the Parkfairfax sale has grown over the past five
years into the largest native plant sale in the Washington D.C. area!)

As it has been for the past two years, the Parkfairfax sale will
continue to be held on the last Saturdays in April and September. (The
next sale after this will be September 27.)

There is still opportunity for a few more volunteers to help out at the
sale. If you would like to help at the sale for three hours, either at
the start (from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) or at the end (from 11:30 a.m.

---------------------
PARKFAIRFAX NATIVE PLANT SALE
April 26, 2008 -- 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Eleven vendors from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia
will be at the 10th Parkfairfax Native Plant Sale, which has been held
twice a year since October 2003 and grown into the largest native plant
sale in the Washington D.C. area. Several of the vendors carry native
trees and shrubs as well as perennials, and several of the vendors
specialize in some aspect of native plants, such as fruiting shrubs,
wetland plants, carnivorous plants, or native azaleas. A few of these
vendors do not come to our local area for any other plant sale.

For a list of vendors, and links to their websites, please see the
plant sale website at http://www.home.earthlink.net/~sknudsen/ and
click on the "vendors" page.

The sale is entirely organized and run by volunteers. No one makes
money from it except the vendors. The purpose of these sales is to
promote native plant gardening in our region because gardening with
natives is better for our watershed, our woodlands, and our wildlife,
especially birds. Bringing together a variety of growers makes it
easier for local gardeners (especially those new to native plant
gardening) to find quality plants and encourages greater demand for
natives in the nursery industry.

For those interested in news about the progress of these sales, the
Parkfairfax Native Plant Sale is gaining a following. From its modest
beginning with just five vendors, this neighborhood sale now regularly
hosts over ten vendors from four states and regularly draws over 500
attendees.

At the April 2007 sale, eleven vendors sold an estimated 2,000 plants
to roughly 600 people who came to the sale, making it the best sale
held thus far! A year before, in April 2006, eight vendors sold over
1,500 plants to approximately 500 people, which was also an increase of
over 30% over the previous fall in terms of total plants sold!

Directions: Parkfairfax is located in the Washington DC metro area
within the I-495 Beltway, in northwest Alexandria directly across I-395
from Shirlington. From I-395, exit Shirlington/Quaker onto Quaker
Lane. At the first light on Quaker, turn left onto Preston. Follow
Preston to Valley and turn left on Valley. The sale will be just past
Gunston on your right. Maps and directions are available on the sale
website.

Please pass this email along to your interested friends. This sale
depends entirely on word-of-mouth support. Thank you for helping to
spread the word!
