Sorry for the somewhat late notice. This ended up in my postponed mail
and stayed there for a time...

This coming Tuesday is the first Tuesday of the month, and being
September, it means it's time for the annual Members' Night BSW meeting.

Date: Tuesday, September 6th 7:00 PM

Topic: The September meeting is Members' Night!

Several members will be giving 5-10 minute presentations on various
topics.

As in the past, our September "Members' Night" will provide an opportunity
for several members to share some of their botanical travel or research
slides, or to present other short subjects (10 minutes or less) to which
this format is especially suited. Members who plan to present slides
should send an email to Christopher Puttock at
christopher.puttock@....

There will be a laptop available for powerpoint presentations or other
digital media that you bring on a CD or USB drive.

The Parkfairfax Native Plant Sale is just a week away on Saturday, September 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This non-profit community plant sale is now 8 years old, and this will be its 17th event.

Fifteen vendors from five states will be hosted, making this event the biggest it has ever been!  As always, a contact list for vendors is provided on the website.  Feel free to call or email vendors and ask about specific plants they might bring for your purchase.

There are some great reasons for coming to this fall sale, the first being that FALL IS THE BEST TIME TO PLANT!  (I have posted a few more reasons online at the link:  http://home.earthlink.net/~sknudsen/id10.html .)

Please note that, last spring, a new domain name was registered for the website.  The new domain name is easier to remember than the old web address.  (The old address continues to work, though, so links to it are fine.)

Please pass this email along to your interested friends!  This sale depends entirely on word-of-mouth support.  Thank you for helping the spread the word!

Cheers,

Speaker: Dr. Steven Casper, ethnobotanist, with the FDA

Topic: Traditional history of use versus modern supplement conditions of
use

Abstract: People throughout the world have traditionally used plants in
ways that create a spectrum from food to medicine and everything in
between. Through millennia, many of these uses have persevered and,
often, in very prescribed ways. However, the current explosion of the
dietary supplement market has created many novel combinations and uses
that have no basis in traditional systems of health.

I just learned about this site from Rod Simmons:
http://mushroomobserver.org

"Purpose: The purpose of this site is to record observations about
mushrooms, help people identify mushrooms they aren¢t familiar with, and
expand the community around the scientific exploration of mushrooms
(mycology). Some have asked what counts as a mushroom. This site takes a
very broad view. While the emphasis is on the large fleshy fungi, other
fungi such as lichens, rust and molds as well as fungus-like organisms
such as slime-molds are all welcome. Ultimately, I hope this site will
become a valuable resource for both amateur and professional mycologists.
I like to think of it as a living field guide for mushrooms or a
collaborative mushroom field journal."

The Tangled Web of Montana Spiders

As invasive plants take root and spread in the grasslands of Missoula, a
tiny native spider is flourishing on the plants and adding to the havoc on
the ecosystem. Producer Ari Daniel Shapiro met with a scientist who is
monitoring the transformation and trying to keep the cascade of events in
check.

Posted Tue, 11/01/2011 - 13:44 by potowmack

FALL WALK AT HUNTLEY MEADOWS PARK Saturday, November 5, 9 to 11am
Join us on Saturday, November 5th for a walk through the Fall at Huntley
Meadows, led by Park Manager Kevin Monroe. Our final event for the year on
the Chesapeake Bay Watershed will be exploring a beautiful fresh water
marsh ecosystem once dominated and maintained by beaver activity. With the
recent reopening of the restored boardwalk this will be an exciting look
at the flora and fauna of the marsh.

Kevin Monroe is an educator and a naturalist. Currently, Kevin is the Park
Manager of Huntley Meadow Park. Previous to this he worked as the Program
Coordinator and Staff Naturalist for the Audubon Society of Northern
Virginia and is still actively involved in the Audubon Society.

MNPS Field Trip: Winter Solstice Walk and Hooley
18 Dec 2011 10:00 AM
Chapman Forest

Leaders: Rod Simmons and Jim Long
Sponsors: MNPS, VNPS Potowmack Chapter, Mattawoman Watershed Society,
Botanical Society of Washington

Celebrate the winter season in Chapman Forest with its spectacular scenery
and remarkable diversity of native trees. We will mainly walk the highland
areas above the deep ravines and bluffs along the Potomac River from the
section near Glymont to historic Mount Aventine. This is a regionally unique
meeting ground for plants with a primary range in the inner piedmont and
mountains and those of the coastal plain. Anticipating the MNPS Year of the
Oak in 2012, we will see as many as 18 species of oaks, including ancient
pagoda, chinquapin, and northern red oaks, plus ancient beech, 3 hickory
species, 2 hackberry species, the National Champion basswood, slippery elm,
white ash, ancient sassafras, Virginia hop-hornbeam, bladdernut, and many
others. Also a variety of birds such as red-headed woodpecker,
yellow-bellied sapsucker, hermit thrush, wood duck, and bald eagle.
Cancelled for heavy-steady snow, sleet, or pouring rain, but not for snow
flurries or drizzling rain.

Registration is not required.

Bring: Wear sturdy shoes and bring lunch or snacks and water.  Most of the
walk traverses rolling, fairly open forest along trails, though some steep
grades will occasionally be encountered.

Directions: Take Indian Head Highway (Rt. 210) south from Capital Beltway
(495).  Proceed south on Rt. 210 for app. 15 miles.  Continue on Rt. 210
past the Rt. 227 intersection at Bryans Road (McDonald's, Burger King, and
shopping center on right and a builders supply will be on left) and start
looking for Chapman Landing Road on right.  Take half right on Chapman
Landing Road and proceed a couple of miles to entrance to Mount Aventine on
right.  Park and meet in parking lot at entrance gate.

Lichen and Moss Workshop on Saturday March 3rd
at WVU in Morgantown, WV

Dr. Sue Studlar of West Virginia University (botany) will host a workshop
on bryophytes and lichens that will start with a display of lichens and
mosses in the botany lab. The display will include Sphagnum cultures from
ongoing experiments by her students illustrating simple techniques for
culturing these intriguing plants in salsa jars!. This demonstration and
display will be followed by a hands on workshop, focusing on bryophyte and
lichen diversity. After all this mind stretching it will be time for lunch
and conversation before going outside to look at the lichens and mosses in
their native habitat in the WV Botanical Garden. Don Flenniken found 41
species of lichens in this garden, which also features robust mosses,
including Sphagum.

Schedule: 10-11 Open House and specimen viewing
11-12:30 Workshop
12:30-1:30 Lunch (eat on campus or brown bag)
1:30-4:00 Visit the Botanical Garden

Subject: [PCA] REVIEW: National Fish Wildlife and Plants Climate Adaptation
Strategy -- Open for Public Review

----- Forwarded Message -----

As you may know, in 2010, Congress directed the Council on Environmental
Quality and the Interior Department to prepare a national government-wide
strategy for addressing climate change impacts on fish, wildlife and plants.

The draft plan is now open for public comment until March 5, 2012. The draft
strategy and portal to submit comments can be found at:

http://www.wildlifeadaptationstrategy.gov

Attached is a press release issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which co-chaired
development of the draft strategy.

(Note: Rather than being attached, the press release referred to above is
here:
http://www.wildlifeadaptationstrategy.gov/pdf/NFWPCAS_Press_Release.pdf)

Note that comments can be submitted a few different ways, including online,
or by mailing the form on this web page:
http://www.wildlifeadaptationstrategy.gov/public-comments.php

People may also be interested in the public workshops that will be held (one
as early as this Thursday), where people can learn more, ask questions, and
provide comments on the draft strategy:

Some time ago, Tania Marien, a botanical artist who lives in
California, interviewed us to know more about our work on Renaissance
botanical illustration, intrigued by our PLANT website. With the
occasion, she also asked us some questions about the Institute for the
Preservation of Medical Traditions, and our research, in general. The
interview has been published today in her beautiful, very
informative blog (which is worthy a visit, regardless our interview):

I was informed today by Julie Moore of the very sad news that Larry Morse
has died. She just today received an email from Kat Maybury of

All, I just got a call from John Kartesz who told me that Larry Morse
passed away recently. John just found out and didn't know many details
except that Larry died at home. John said he would let me know about any
funeral or memorial arrangements that the family makes. I will pass that
along to you all and to the network botanists as soon as I know. I’m sorry
I don't have more information but I just thought you all would want to
know. -Kat

George Washington visited on June 10 and September 2, 1787, the gardens
that John Bartram, Jr., had inherited from his botanist father in 1771
(Diaries, 5:166,183). The gardens were located on the west bank of the
Schuylkill River three miles southwest of Philadelphia, and almost
twenty-one years later, in March 1792, Washington ordered over 200 trees
and shrubs for Mount Vernon from Bartram's garden. The date for
Washington's order is taken from his docket on the cover, which reads
"List of Plants & Shrubs from Mr Bartram March--1792" and from his
directions for his gardener John Christian Ehlers of 7 Nov. 1792, in which
GW refers to Bartram's "Catalogue of Mar: 92." This document is printed
(on website) below; the original is found in the Washington Papers at the
Library of Congress (DLC:GW).
