FALL WALK AT HUNTLEY MEADOWS PARK Saturday, November 5, 9 to 11am
Join us on Saturday, November 5th for a walk through the Fall at Huntley
Meadows, led by Park Manager Kevin Monroe. Our final event for the year on
the Chesapeake Bay Watershed will be exploring a beautiful fresh water
marsh ecosystem once dominated and maintained by beaver activity. With the
recent reopening of the restored boardwalk this will be an exciting look
at the flora and fauna of the marsh.
Kevin Monroe is an educator and a naturalist. Currently, Kevin is the Park
Manager of Huntley Meadow Park. Previous to this he worked as the Program
Coordinator and Staff Naturalist for the Audubon Society of Northern
Virginia and is still actively involved in the Audubon Society.

Celebrate the winter season in Chapman Forest with its spectacular scenery
and remarkable diversity of native trees. We will mainly walk the highland
areas above the deep ravines and bluffs along the Potomac River from the
section near Glymont to historic Mount Aventine. This is a regionally unique
meeting ground for plants with a primary range in the inner piedmont and
mountains and those of the coastal plain. Anticipating the MNPS Year of the
Oak in 2012, we will see as many as 18 species of oaks, including ancient
pagoda, chinquapin, and northern red oaks, plus ancient beech, 3 hickory
species, 2 hackberry species, the National Champion basswood, slippery elm,
white ash, ancient sassafras, Virginia hop-hornbeam, bladdernut, and many
others. Also a variety of birds such as red-headed woodpecker,
yellow-bellied sapsucker, hermit thrush, wood duck, and bald eagle.
Cancelled for heavy-steady snow, sleet, or pouring rain, but not for snow
flurries or drizzling rain.
Registration is not required.
Bring: Wear sturdy shoes and bring lunch or snacks and water. Most of the
walk traverses rolling, fairly open forest along trails, though some steep
grades will occasionally be encountered.
Directions: Take Indian Head Highway (Rt. 210) south from Capital Beltway
(495). Proceed south on Rt. 210 for app. 15 miles. Continue on Rt. 210
past the Rt. 227 intersection at Bryans Road (McDonald's, Burger King, and
shopping center on right and a builders supply will be on left) and start
looking for Chapman Landing Road on right. Take half right on Chapman
Landing Road and proceed a couple of miles to entrance to Mount Aventine on
right. Park and meet in parking lot at entrance gate.

Lichen and Moss Workshop on Saturday March 3rd
at WVU in Morgantown, WV
Dr. Sue Studlar of West Virginia University (botany) will host a workshop
on bryophytes and lichens that will start with a display of lichens and
mosses in the botany lab. The display will include Sphagnum cultures from
ongoing experiments by her students illustrating simple techniques for
culturing these intriguing plants in salsa jars!. This demonstration and
display will be followed by a hands on workshop, focusing on bryophyte and
lichen diversity. After all this mind stretching it will be time for lunch
and conversation before going outside to look at the lichens and mosses in
their native habitat in the WV Botanical Garden. Don Flenniken found 41
species of lichens in this garden, which also features robust mosses,
including Sphagum.

Directions: From I-79 exit 155 (Star City) FOLLOW SIGNS FOR WVU (for those
with GPS navigators, the address is 53 Campus Drive, Morgantown WV 26506
Shortly after the turn from the exit ramp there is an entrance to the
University Town Center shopping mall. Continue straight through their
signal toward the Sheetz/MacDonald's plaza. Turn/bear right at that signal
onto Rt. 19 (Monongahela Blvd.). Follow it south, crossing the Star City
Bridge and up the hill to the WVU basketball coliseum (on your right at
the Patteson Dr. intersection).
Continue straight on Rt. 19 (now called Beechurst Ave.), which has center
road dividers (both lanes go through) at the Evansdale campus entrance
(Core Arboretum is on the right). Go down a long hill (elevated train on
right) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgantown_PRT) and through the
signal at the small Seneca Center Mall (on your right). The streets you
pass on the left are named in decreasing numerical sequence from Eighth to
Third. At the next signal, turn left onto Campus Dr. (up a steep hill) and
right at the first driveway into lot 10. The large red brick and green
copper building is Life Sciences (LSB). Park here (or in the lower lot 8,
if full), and enter LSB through the loading dock door (basement level).
The herbarium is down the hall (turn right at the end of the corridor)
next to the elevators. Dr. Ford's office is adjacent in room B2, as well
as upstairs in LSB 5230 (by the bryophyte herbarium).

George Washington visited on June 10 and September 2, 1787, the gardens
that John Bartram, Jr., had inherited from his botanist father in 1771
(Diaries, 5:166,183). The gardens were located on the west bank of the
Schuylkill River three miles southwest of Philadelphia, and almost
twenty-one years later, in March 1792, Washington ordered over 200 trees
and shrubs for Mount Vernon from Bartram's garden. The date for
Washington's order is taken from his docket on the cover, which reads
"List of Plants & Shrubs from Mr Bartram March--1792" and from his
directions for his gardener John Christian Ehlers of 7 Nov. 1792, in which
GW refers to Bartram's "Catalogue of Mar: 92." This document is printed
(on website) below; the original is found in the Washington Papers at the
Library of Congress (DLC:GW).

“Transforming 21st Century Comparative Biology using Evolutionary Trees”
In collaboration with the United States Botanic Garden
Supported by the Cuatrecasas Family Foundation
Over the last 20 years great progress has been made toward assembling a
phylogeny of life on Earth and our expanding knowledge of evolutionary
relationships is transforming 21st century biology. This is especially true
in comparative biology where phylogenetic methods and trees – usually based
on molecular data which is increasingly of genomics scale – are proving
effective tools to reveal new and often unexpected insights into how
organisms evolve and adapt to their environments. These advances span new
important questions and enable a fresh look at old questions that include:
diversification, role of extinction, response to climate change,
co-evolution, the influence of genetic architecture on morphological
evolution, and patterns of community assembly and interaction.
The 10th Smithsonian Botanical Symposium, hosted by the Department of Botany
and the United States Botanic Garden, will address the question: How do we
put the knowledge of evolutionary relationships to work to better describe
and understand the diversification of life on Earth? The invited speakers
will cover a wide range of organisms and topics to illuminate how molecular
phylogenetics can be used to understand evolutionary and ecological
processes.

the BSW folks about an appropriate place before the next meeting , then
we can discuss in depth at the March 6 regular BSW meeting. We can also
discuss the idea of an annual Larry Morse Field Trip.
Roosevelt Island is a good possibility but as you say, weedy. I have
fond memories of a trip in the Potomac Gorge when we walk around on the
rocks looking at disjunct species. Any other places you would suggest?

It was on a TNC trip to Ice Mountain in 1990 that I initially met Larry.

I think that is a great idea. It certainly was one of the most memorable
trips that I have been on with the BSW. We went in June, 1989, if I recall
correctly. The air temperature was about 90 whereas the thermometer
inserted in one of the cold vents read 38ºF! Larry was indeed the leader of

All of those trips sound most appropriate and would be a wonderful tribute
