This is an excerpt from the International Year of Astronomy website:

"Following the unprecedented success of IYA2009's 100 Hours of Astronomy
(www.100hoursofastronomy.org), which featured hugely popular projects such as a
Global Star Party, the live 24-hour webcast "Around the World in 80
Telescopes",another series of astronomy events has been highlighted for 22-24
October 2009. This new IYA2009 Cornerstone Project is called Galilean Nights and
will see amateur and professional astronomers around the globe taking to the
streets, pointing their telescopes to the wonders that Galileo observed 400
years ago.

The focus of the project is sidewalk observations of gas giant Jupiter and its
moons, as well as allowing members of the public to observe the Sun, our own
Moon and many more celestial marvels."

Would the Brunei Astronomy Club be interested in participating in such an event?
If I get approval I would like to do a Galilean Nights "Star Party" at the
International School Brunei.

Please e-mail me at chrisr@... or crieger@... as soon as possible
to confirm your interest. Thank you!

2. Penulis bergambar berlatar belakang Pearl of The Orient tower di Shanghai.

21 Julai: Haiyan

Bermalam di Gold Bull Hotel, Haiyan menanti esok sebelum cerapan gerhana matahari penuh.

22 Julai: Haiyan

Jam 9.32 pagi.

Mula gelap pada jam 9:35:12 pagi.

Gelap sepenuhnya pada jam 9:35:42 pagi!

Flash kamera terpaksa dipasang kerana terlalu gelap pada jam 9:39:08 pagi!

Mula cerah semula pada jam 9:39:30 pagi waktu tempatan Haiyan.

Suasana cerah kembali pada jam 9:40:12 pagi sementara lampu-lampu di tepian tasik sana masih terpasang.

Jam 9:40 pagi

Jam 9.42 pagi

Jam 9.43 pagi

Jam 9.44 pagi

Jam 9.50 pagi

Jam 9.52 pagi

Jam 9.55 pagi

Bersambung esok

Ikuti kembara saya ke Great Wall, Masjid Niujie, Forbidden City, Summer Palace dan terakhir: Balaicerap Purba Beijing!! Sejarah astronomi China memang hebat., sehebat Tembok Besar China (Great Wall) itu sendiri!

Saya bersama arca Guo Shoujing, ahli astronomi tersohor China.

Above:  Stages of the solar eclipse as the Moon pass in front of the sun.

Bandar Seri Begawan People in Brunei will have the opportunity to observe a partial solar eclipse on wednesday morning, July 22.

The astronomical wonder is expected to start at 8.48 a.m. local time when the moon will make its first contact with the sun.

If weather conditions permitted, the partial eclipse can be viewed for 1 hour and 34 minutes.

At 9.33 a.m. the maximum visibility will take place when only 8.3 percent of the sun will be obscured by the moon.  The last stages of the eclipse will occur at 10.22 a.m.

Click Here for the animated simulation of the partial solar eclipse as view from Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei

The spectacular event should be observed with precautions. Eclipse watchers are advised to avoid looking at the sun directly with the naked eyes, through a telescope or binoculars as these may cause damage to the eyesight. Proper solar filters or eclipse glasses must be used for observation.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth. It is an uncommon celestial event as the three bodies are rarely perfectly aligned. The next partial solar eclipse visible in this country is set to occur next year on January 15, 2010.

The new year is almost here and it is a special one for Astronomy.
UNESCO has declared 2009 to be the International Year of Astronomy.
There are lots of events being planned to celebrate and promote
Astronomy. Does the Astronomical Society of Brunei have any plans to
participate? If so, I would be willing to lend a hand and perhaps get
my students involved.

A successful observation of lunar eclipse was held on early Sunday morning, August 17, 2008 at the parking lot of the Survey Department, Berakas. About 100 astronomy enthusiasts gathered to observe the phenomenon. This observation was coordinated by the Astronomy Unit of the Survey Department.

Interesting photos of the eclipse observation can be found at PABD's Gallery.

Here are some of the best images sent by local photographers and around the region.

Above: A photographic sequence of a partial lunar eclipse on  August 17, 2008 taken at the first contact, when the moon just touches the umbra at 3:35 am, until maximum eclipse at 5:10 am from Bandar Seri Begawan.  During the eclipse, the bright full moon slowly moves into the umbral shadow of the Earth producing a dark arched “bite” out of the edge of the moon. The next lunar eclipse visible from Brunei is predicted on January 1, 2010. Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam.

A total lunar eclipse is set to occur tomorrow on August 28 and will be visible in Brunei between 6.25pm and 8.24pm.

Unlike the previous partial lunar eclipse on 8 Sept last year, this eclipse would be a total. It will be a  very spectacular cosmic event as the entire moon will pass the earth`s shadow.

WASHINGTON - Malaysia's debut spaceflyer, the first female commander of International Space Station (ISS) and a veteran Russian cosmonaut are gearing up for their orbital mission this fall.

Malaysian orthopedic surgeon Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, 34, is training for a planned Oct. 10 launch towards the ISS with veteran NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson and cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko to kick off the 16th expedition to the orbital laboratory.

"It's really important to me to spur interest among all the Malaysian people," Shukor told reporters during a Monday press briefing at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. "But my focus has always been on schoolchildren."

Chosen from a competitive field of 11,000, Shukor said he is proud to represent Malaysia in space as its first astronaut, or 'angkasawan.'Whitson, the space station's first female commander, and Malenchenko are both veteran ISS flyers. Whitson flew in 2002 as an Expedition 5 flight engineer and NASA's first ISS science officer, while Malenchenko commanded Expedition 7 in 2003.

"It is going to be a very complicated and aggressive mission," said Whitson, adding that she hopes her role as commander will encourage young women to embrace science and mathematics. "But I think I've got a great team."

Busy mission ahead

Whitson and Malenchenko will join the third member of their crew, NASA astronaut Clayton Anderson already aboard the ISS, for what is expected to be a packed flight of challenging station construction and crew swaps.

In late October, NASA plans to launch the shuttle Discovery's STS-120 mission and deliver Harmony, a connecting node that will serve as the attachment point for future international laboratories. Discovery will also ferry veteran NASA astronaut Daniel Tani to replace Anderson - who will return with the STS-120 crew - as part of Expedition 16.

"It's going to be an extremely exciting time, a sort of moment of growth for the space station," Tani said of Expedition 16.

Another ISS crewmember, European Space Agency (ESA) spaceflyer Leopold Eyharts, is due to replace Tani in December, when NASA hopes to launch the Atlantis orbiter and its STS-122 astronaut crew to deliver Europe's Columbus laboratory to the station.

NASA astronaut Garret Reisman, a first-time spaceflyer, is slated to round out the Expedition 16 crew in February 2008 during NASA's STS-123 shuttle mission aboard Endeavour. That flight, slated for a Feb. 14 launch, will deliver the first component of a Japanese laboratory to the ISS along with a Canadian-built robot for use with the station's robotic arm.

"To participate and operate all this different hardware is going to be absolutely phenomenal," Reisman said of the new elements to be added to the ISS during his flight. "It's going to be wonderful."
