BicycleWORKS, a not-for-profit organization in the Shaw neighborhood,
seeks nine to fifteen people to serve on its Board of Directors.
BicycleWORKS provides any youth ages 9-14 in the St. Louis area with
educational enrichment, vocational training and community service
opportunities.
Specifically, BicycleWORKS provides youth the opportunity to earn a used
bicycle or computer through its ten-week Earn-A-Bike or Earn-A-Computer
programs. These programs are supplemented by Brains Barn which provide
help with homework and academic enrichment. Youths who continue with the
programs may serve in apprentice programs and learn retail operations in
the small bike and computer shops serving residents in the Tower Grove
area.
BicycleWORKS is presently in transition from an organization founded by a
charismatic leader to a more professionally administered operation. The
organization seeks an enthusiastic, diverse group of people with
backgrounds in the following areas: accounting (CPA); law; public
relations; education; development/fundraising; marketing; retailing
(small business); volunteer management; non-profit administration (social
service); grants foundations; politics, and construction. The current
all-volunteer organization desires to expand its mission of providing the
youth of St. Louis with positive alternatives to illiteracy, gangs and
drugs. BicycleWORKS seeks to provide a safe haven where kids can have fun
while learning responsibility, citizenship skills and receiving
preparation for the world of work.
If you are interested in rebuilding BicycleWORKS and offering these
programs to other city neighborhoods, you may contact the following
volunteers by e-mail or phone.
