Two movies are generating a lot of media interest this week. Keep your eye open for reviews of BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF (LE PACTE DES LOUPS), a French film based on actual events of the 1760s. An animal, known as La Bete du Gevaudan (the Beast of Gevaudan), killed many people. The reality of the attacks is undisputed, and the animal became somewhat of a legend in France, still spoken of today...in a way, like Jack the Ripper. It's unusual for large animals to become habitual consumers of humans. Although we are relatively easy to catch, apparently, we taste bad. Often, an animal that begins to attack people is sick or injured or otherwise unable to catch its usual prey. It seems to be sort of like jalapenos...after awhile, you can develop a taste for them. The other movie is THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, due to be released on January 25th. The movie is a major production, starring Richard Gere. It is officially based on the classic book of the same name by John A. Keel. It should hit all the usual preview and review media, including your local paper. It seems to be quite a loose adaptation: making the John Keel character a newcomer to the world of the weird is quite a switch from the way the book has it, but we'll see. The book affected a lot of people, with its sense that the world could be warped and twisted to "get" one individual. It seems a strange sort of paranoia: the Men-in-Black (and much of our concept of them, prior to the MEN IN BLACK movie, came from this book) are definitely not from the government, and aren't aliens from space either. However, they are not normal humans. The "normal humans" lives can be ruined just to play a joke on John Keel. In some ways, the book makes it seem that "it's all about John", and I suspect that will come across in the movie.

Also coming up, A&E will do an ANCIENT MYSTERIES marathon on Martin Luther King Day (Monday, January 21).

Late breaking rumor (courtesy of Jan Lamprecht, HOLLOW PLANETS author) has it that Dan Aykroyd's OUT THERE series is being delayed. We had expected to see it on the SCI-FI Channel in about March. Conversely, another rumor courtesy of Bill Hamilton (author of of Skywatch says that the SCI FI Channel is working on a new UFO documentary series based on Patrick Huyghe's FIELD GUIDE TO UFOS.
