*Deep Breath*
Hmm.. thats a difficult one tho. I dont know if any composer goes out to say
"Hmm.. what C64 sid tune will I remix now for the sake of being a C64-remix?"
For me at least, it is a case of certain C64 songs being very dear to me, and if
I remix them, its because I like that particular song so much. For example, I
have always loved the LastNinja loader theme, so I wanted to do my own
arrangement of it (not a remix as such) even tho Chris Abbot had already done an
excellent and extremely authentic version of it. That did not stop me wanting
to do it, I thought I would compose it in my own way for people hear a slightly
different way. Then there's the Dead Guys with their totally unique versions of
C64 tracks. Three musicians could do a version of a popular C64 track - and if
the composers are any good at all, then each version will be different in their
own way, whilst retaining the music that is the original C64 version.
It is no coincidence that there are so many remixes of Last Ninja, Wizardry,
Sanxion et all more than anything else, it would be that those particular songs
touched so many people, and were songs that went far beyond their simple
3-channel SID-synthesised voices.
Phew! Just my two cents ;)

Well, almost never (Back in Time 1 had a pretty good version IMHBO*).
Chris
* In my humble biased opinion
Hi to all,
Only to let you know I'm actually working on a "Delta - HiScore" rmx, a
tune that, for what I know, has never
been covered before.
Ah, a little hidden feature; we have made avaiable online one of our
unpublished 12" record (bad
english speaking...). It's avaiable on our mp3 section. One of the 4
versions, precisely the
one named "Paradise (Mellow Fairlight Ganga-Bung Rmx)", is entirely
_BASED_ on the music
from the classic game "FAIRLIGHT". A rip off? Nahh, a tribute :) It's
strange enough to be
listened (and is singed).

Purple ThirdEYE: Monty
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
It gets boring in the middle (I think it's missing a melody line from
Monty),
then - it switches to Commando hi-score! Ha-ha - great pun!!! :) (Kept it.)
>>>>>>>>
My pun, if I'm not mistaken! (I've had a combined Monty on the Run
high score/Commando high score MIDI on my page for years...)
Actually I've often wondered how much of my MIDI files
get "recycled" in some way or another... sometimes I've heard
covers which include all the extra bits I put into a MIDI file
(for instance, the extra stuff I put into my old One Man and his
Droid MIDI file), even though they weren't in the original song...
Not that I mind, of course!
Chris
Hi all!
Well, I'll get the ball rolling here. In no particular order, here are some of
my past and present reviews of C64 remixes.
Just remember (aka disclaimer =): these are -my- opinions, and are highly
subjective!!! Some are very short, some are longer - remember, most of these
reviews were written months ago, and their length depends on how much time I
had to write them and in what mood I was when I wrote them.
Since there may be a lot of remixers present on this list, I have to say this:
don't flame me if I heavily criticized one of your tunes - it's not worth it,
believe me. If you would like to know what I didn't like in your remix in more
detail, I'd be glad re-listen to your remix and discuss it with you *IN
PRIVATE*, but if you just plain don't agree with me: grow up and swallow it.
Music is highly subjective on both ends: both from the composer's and the
listener's point of view. If nobody tells you that your remix sounds crap,
you'll keep pumping out crap. And I don't want that to happen. I want to have
great C64 remixes out there that I can keep listening to! (Yes, I am selfish.)
Frankly, I have heard a shitload of C64 covers by now, and the more I listen
to, the less I find good enough to be worthy of keeping. Unfortunately, a
surprisingly large amount of the remixes are either downright crappy or just
plain unimaginative. Also, in retrospect I find that many covers I used to like
I don't like any more. It's possibly due to the fact that when I first listened
to those covers, I didn't hear any, yet, and so as novelty items, I liked them.
But now that I've heard bazillions of Sanxion, Last Ninja, Wizardry and other
covers, their novelty value wore off. (Hint to remixers: find some different
tunes in HVSC to cover!!!)
Most of these remixes can be downloaded in MP3 either from www.c64audio.com, or
from Triad's MP3 site, or from Kai's excellent Last Ninja site. Wherever I
could, I noted where the MP3 is located (approximately :).
Bowness: Thing Bounces Back
---------------------------
http://www.c64audio.com/newmp3
Cewl! Awesome! I would added some chords to the lead line here and there, but
other than that, it's pretty good! It is really true to the spirit of the
original.
Christian Leuenberg: LN2 Central Park Ingame Remix
--------------------------------------------------
http://www.c64files.com
I have heard better LN2 covers. This one sounds weak (the instrument selection
is at times rather questionable) and unpolished. Sometimes it sounds like it
was put together in just a few minutes.
Feekzoid: Armakuni's Journey
----------------------------
http://lasninja.c64.org
Very, very good! Great use of lush choirs and drums, good use of the original
lead line, but the arpeggios sound a little out of place. Replace them with
some chords, and this tune is perfect. The echo/reverb effects in this tune are
very realistic - they are the equivalent of a painting that is almost
indistinguishable from the original! At the beginning of the tune I took my
headphones off thinking that the tune was playing in the room I was sitting in!
Sounds a little like a soundtrack, maybe something from "The Last Emperor". :)
Betweenzone: The Human Race
---------------------------
Good use of samples and instruments, but doesn't sound as grandiose as I
imagined it to be. After 2 min. it gets disappointing. Too bad, because it
started out sooo good!...
Acarid: C64 revisited
----------------------
(Triad's site)
Cover of /Schneider_Markus/Marku001.sid, which I -still- believe should be
called "Beyond the Zero" from the demo/intro of the same name, as I clearly
remember the tune's title being stated in that proggy. Not a very good cover,
but I kept it because it covers a tune that has not been covered so far. That
about sums up its positives. The remix is essentially the original SID stitched
together in various ways.
Cauldron II techno mix
----------------------
(Triad's site)
This is pretty bad. Don't even think about downloading it.
PaleDeth: The Last Ninja 1 Song 11
----------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Extremely thin, very weak. Avoid it if you want to sleep well.
Puffy: The Last Ninja 2 - The Basement
--------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
WOW!!! Hard rock is the -perfect- style for this song! The electric guitars are
very good for this tune. Too bad that much of the original sounds are also
retained (incl. some arpeggios). Kinda kills the mood. :-( I kept it
nevertheless, although it shows more promise than substance.
Sublevel 3 (Decryption?): CBM 64 Medley
---------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Not bad, not bad. Kept it.
Marcel Donne: Saboteur 2
------------------------
A refreshingly good track in the ocean of mediocrity.
(Various)
---------
http://www.digitalexcess.de/downloads/goodies/index.html
The Gösta Feiweier tunes are not too good, probably because they are MODs/XMs
converted to MP3... The Detert tunes (especially The Switch) are very good,
though.
(Taxim's remixes)
-----------------
http://www.tempest.c64.org/download.htm
The Cooperation is pretty good! Sounds a little muddy to me (not enough
harmonics and high frequencies, maybe because of the 128kbps MP3), it's also
noisy (like all other Taxim MP3s - weren't these recorded from tapes?), but
otherwise, I like it. The Katakis cover has an awesome bass to start with, but
it's kinda disappointing afterwards. The Lightforce and Commando covers are
pretty weak. The Warhawk cover is so-so. The Last Ninja tunes are very good.
Various MP3s found on the BIT2 CD-ROM
-------------------------------------
- Thrust by Bowness (Boz) (so-so, but has its good moments)
- Yie-ar Kung Fu 2 by Donne (beautiful, well selected sounds!)
- Confuzion by Abbott (bass is not strong enuff; also, use pitch slides instead
of a chromatic downscale for the guitar - sounds unnatural this way)
- Flimbo's Quest by Trace (can't screw it up, the original is just so good :)
- Times of Lore by Abbott (wonderful guitar, and again, the original is so
good that it'd take a genious to screw it up, but: should've used flute at
the end instead of that weak pad, and pitch bend at the subtle note ends, eg.
at 1:08)
- Watson_m.mp3 by Hubbard (cool! 8-)
- Last Ninja 2 by Puffy (organic!, it sounds like a real band playing - very
nicely done!!!)
- Last Ninja '96 Medley by Scorpion ("retro" in the sense that it has samples
from the original SID in it, but it sounds good)
- The Last Ninja by Instant Remedy (I still like it - perfect instruments)
- Terra Cresta by Donne (another tune you can't cover wrong ;)
- Lightforce 2000 by Abbott (pretty good)
- Chimera by Abbott (very nice!)
- Enigma Force by Peter Mörck (cewl!)
- Last V8 by Trace (not bad)
- Last Ninja 2 Alternative Violin Mix by Putzi (probably the only MP3 I've
ever heard from Putzi that I like...)
- The World is my Oyster by Liljedahl (I *love* guitars!)
- Last Ninja Wastelands Loader by Abbott (the guitar is all over the panning
space man! Brrrr!!! I just don't like synthetized guitar sounds that do not
sound natural - see above about lack of slides.)
- Super Pipeline 2 by Abbott (finally, something different being covered!!! :)
I listened to hundreds of boring Last Ninja covers when my playlist hit this
gem... However, it's too electronic - needs a German folk band playing this
tune!)
- Ninja-in-progress by Feekzoid (so-so)
- Analogue Ninja by Feekzoid (WOW!! Cewl!!!)
- Warhawk.xm by Ferrara (a *new* interpretation of an old tune - daring,
and good!)
However, there were two very, very bad covers on the CD-ROM, and
surprisingly, these were done by the same people I just praised above:
- Knucklebusters by Donne (very, very bad! Has its moments at around 3:35,
but I don't really like it.)
- Spellbound by Scorpion (It's mechanic, dare I say, boring.)
Big Benn (Mega Mix)
-------------------
http://www.heechee.net/bart
Nothing spectacular, but it's not bad at all. It's 7MB to download, it's mostly
a dance tune, but not bad at that. (Kept it.)
Last Ninja Jungle Resurrection
------------------------------
http://www.heechee.net/bart
Matches the mood of the original, even with the added dance/jungle/house/
whatever rhythm. Retains the best sounds from the original and uses them as
regular samples - smartly done. (Kept it.)
Streets of Last Ninja
---------------------
http://www.heechee.net/bart
Ugly analog base drum taints this otherwise crappy tune. Too bad - it could've
been less bad. With that base drum it's downright ugly. (Deleted.)
Con: Supremacy
--------------
(Triad's site)
I have a very precise idea about how I would do a cover of this tune, and this
one is not quite how I would go with it. It's not a bad cover, though. (Kept
it.)
Con: The Great Giana Sisters
----------------------------
(Triad's site)
What's the point of making a cover when the composer himself have already
remade the tune on professional equipment? Disappointing. Avoid it. (Deleted.)
daFrenz: Entombed
----------------------------
(Triad's site)
Breakbeats with analog stuff above it. Not my kind of thing. (Deleted.)
daFrenz: The Last V8
----------------------------
(Triad's site)
Original SID with breakbeats again. Uses the original SID only as long samples
in the tune. Two minutes into the tune the solo finally appears, which is not
bad. But the tune just goes on and on building on the first few bars of the
SID, and never reaches the climax. Murders the original SID. I'd avoid it.
(Deleted.)
David Filskov: Firelord
----------------------------
(Triad's site)
Starts with a harpsicord-like sound - very fitting. Continues with nice drums
and a choir. Too bad it's so short! (Kept it.)
David Filskov: One Man and His Droid
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Not bad, but I don't think it's punchy enough. It's not quite "there". (Kept
it, though.)
DJB: Skate or Die
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
The electric guitar at the start is good, but the Hammond-organ chords
following it are pretty weak. But it's a cover fairly faithful to the original.
(Kept it.)
Eric Delos: Drudgery (covering DRAX)
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
WTF? Essentially the same as the SID, with effects and better drums added. Not
very imaginative. (Deleted.)
No-XS: Enlightenmen Druid II
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Pretty much what you'd expect here: starts with string pads, goes on with
'fantasia'-style bright pads (possibly some stock sounds from a synth), but the
addition of the harp is nice. The middle livens up a little (with stock (?)
brass lead), but at that point, it feels like it's just dragging on. The
closing choir is a nice touch again. (Kept it.)
O2: Bulldog
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Pretty nice, except for the ongoing arpeggio at the beginning (grrr). But it's
one of the better made tunes of the above bunch. (Kept it.)
Oxygener: Auf Wiedersehen Monty
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Pretty weak, with some sampled speech in there. (Deleted.)
Paradroid: Lightforce
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Pretty faithful to the original, but we've heard Lightforce covers like this
before... It's fairly good, though. (Kept it.)
Purple ThirdEYE: Monty
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
It's trying to make a pop love-song out of the hi-score tune. I fully expected
a singer coming up instead of the lead instrument. ;) (We have to write some
lyrics to this song, folks! :-) A little cheesy, but it drew a smile from me.
It gets boring in the middle (I think it's missing a melody line from Monty),
then - it switches to Commando hi-score! Ha-ha - great pun!!! :) (Kept it.)
Putzi: Dominator (Alpha Mix)
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Dance beats + arpeggio. For me: = horror. (Deleted.)
Putzi: Dominator (SASHed Mix)
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Dance beats + arpeggio. For me: = horror. Plus I hate Sash. (Deleted.)
SM Pedersen: Defender of the Crown
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
The way covers should be done. This one is made with Middle Age-ish instruments
(although I would hardly call a harpsichord Middle Age instrument ;) plus
orchestral sounds, and it sounds nice. (Kept it.)
Sun Dancer and Bloque: Outrun
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Same as the SID, with dumbass bassline and drums added to it, and with
occasional use of ReBirth or TB-808 (or -303?). (Deleted.)
TDG: Arkanoid
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
Strange cover, which in itself makes it stand out from the crowd. Stupid speech
sample from "Rocketman" (?) taints the middle section, but otherwise, a relaxed
tune that is nice to listen to. (Kept it.)
Knibal: The Great Giana Sisters
------------------------------------
(from mp3.com)
I take Hülsbeck's version any time. Personally, I deleted this one.
Peppy: Parallax
------------------------------------
(from mp3.com)
This has hardly anything to do with the original tune, except for a few themes
here and there that were lifted from the original. I am unimpressed by it. This
cover has nothing to do with the spirit of the original, but starting at 4:23
it has a nice section in it where a violin (!) (or cello?) is playing the main
melody. That's the only reason I am not deleting it. That simple touch with the
violin makes it worth keeping.
Peppy: Sanxion
------------------------------------
(from mp3.com)
Similar to Parallax, the violin here also puts a new, so far unheard view on
this tune. Overall, this remix is far from being good - except for the violin
(or cello, or whatever). :)
Peppy: Sanxion (extended)
------------------------------------
(from mp3.com)
The only new thing in it is that at about 4:25 it features the original lead
line from Hubbard's Sanxion. Other than that, it's the same as the non-extended
remix.
Player One: Magical Sounds (Outrun)
------------------------------------
(from mp3.com)
Pretty crappy. At times it sounds like the samples from the original tune were
incorporated into the tune. This cover has a "bad MOD"-feeling to it due to the
low-quality samples and the ad hoc arrangement. Stay away from it. Deleted.
Skimpy: Monty on the Run, High Score Tune
-----------------------------------------
(from mp3.com)
Now, this is nice, cute, cuddly, in other words, true to the original! :) I
quite like it! It's a little longer than it should be, but that's okay. Of the
whole bunch that Shark pointed out to me from mp3.com, this one is the one I
would recommend to everybody to download. Thumbs up.
Stefan Granberg: Wizardry
------------------------------------
(from mp3.com)
Not bad, but not good, either. It's not as crappy as, say, the Outrun remix
above, but it's not as good as, say, the MotR cover. I don't like the choice of
instruments, either. Still, I won't delete it.
Tero Mäyränen (Deetsay): (11 MP3 covers from his "Kuusnelos EP")
----------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.jyu.fi/~deetsay/mp3/
Warren told me that most of these were composed on a C64s with a lot of post-
processing afterwards. Your mileage may vary, but I don't really like them. For
SID tunes they are weak. For MP3 tunes they are certainly "different", but I
mean that in a diminishing way. Also, their style is not what I prefer to
listen to. All are pretty minimalistic techno/industrial tunes. Notable
exceptions are Hyvää Päivää (track #9) and MOS6581...125mk (track #10), which
are somewhat better than the rest.
LaLa: Blue Max
------------------------------------
(Triad's site)
No comments. :-)
Phiew, there you have it! I promise I won't send such a long post to this
mailing list again!

Hi,
I made several (not too many) covers of C64 and Atari XL/XE tunes, you can find
two of
them at
http://pulse.mute.cz/tunez
Let me know your opinion.. :-)
They are all encoded to 96kbps (I don't think they're worth anything
more). Some of them are even in the original .IT files (either they're
too bad or it would be nonsense to encode them (one is just a 1:1 copy
of the original including all the sounds).
I'm working on one more tune (Panther by David Whittaker) which should be
finished by the end of this month..

Hello,
Seeing as most of the ppl on here are saying hello to each other, I'd
thought I'd join in. Looks like this was an excellent idea of Kai's to get
this going. Hello to everyone on the list!
FYI, I've posted some of my latest remixes in my I-Drive. It includes Thing
Bounces Back and Thundercats. There's also a (pretty bad!!) version of
"Infinity" done by Deek. It needs a lot of work, which I probably won't do
now.
The I-Drive URL is http://www.idrive.com/BozRetro/
Anyway, good luck to all!

Can I post remix reviews here? Believe it or not, between members of the HVSC

I really like that now there's a dedicated mailing list for this. And I would

Since I expect this list to have pretty many members I thought this
