If somebody asked you to describe a perfect day in the life of your photography
business, could you do it?
If somebody asked you to describe your ideal customer, could you do it?
If somebody asked you what you wanted your business to look like in 5 years,
could you do it? How about 10 years? Or 20?
It's sad, really, how many photographers spend hundreds or thousands of hours
trying to perfect their craft... when then don't have the first clue about how
to actually make money with their craft.
Look, I understand the whole "art for art's sake," thing... but I have a hunch
that more often than not, this is simply used as an excuse by photographers who
aren't making any money.
But making money with your photography isn't really as hard as you might
think... although it does require (excuse the pun) some intense focus.
If you're a little unclear about what your business should look like, here are
the first 3 things you must do to get your photography business on the right
track:
1. Figure out what your photography strengths are... then cater to them. If you
have a strong eye for photographing people... consider being a fashion or
portrait photographer. It you're particularly skilled at photographing
buildings, consider shooting commercial real estate. And so on.
On the other hand, if you get abnormally nervous when dealing with people... you
probably shouldn't be a wedding photographer. If you have trouble photographing
moving objects, you might want to stay away from NASCAR photography. And so on.
2. Figure out who your ideal customer is. What are their habits? What gives them
pleasure? What scares them? What are their hobbies?
The more narrowly you can define this ideal customer, the more you can gear your
marketing toward them. After all, you can be the most technically skilled
photographer in the world... but if you can't get people to actually buy your
photographs, these skills could go to waste.
3. Figure out what you want your business to look like in 20 years. Thinking
long-term will force you to make smarter decisions than if you're just trying to
pay the rent next week. Create a solid vision of your business, and then make
every marketing decision with this vision in mind.
Of course, marketing your business is a complete subject to itself (sadly, one
that most photographers don't have a clue about), but until you know exactly
what you're trying to accomplish with your photography-both today and 20 years
from now-you'll be running hard on a treadmill, going nowhere.

The Tolerance of the Prophet towards Other Religions (part 2 of 2): Religious
Autonomy and Politics
ツ
Description: Many mistakenly believe that Islam does not tolerate the existence
of other religions present in the world.ツ This article discusses some of the
foundations the Prophet Muhammad himself laid in dealing with people of other
faiths, with a practical examples from his lifetime.ツ Part 2: More examples
from the Prophet窶冱 life which portray his tolerance of other religions.
ツ
There are many other examples during the lifetime of the Prophet, may the mercy
and blessings of God be upon him, in addition to the Saheefah that practically
portray the tolerance Islam shows for other religions.
Freedom of Religious Assembly and Religious Autonomy
Given consent by the constitution, the Jews had the complete freedom to practice
their religion.ツ The Jews in Medina at the time of the Prophet had their own
school of learning, named Bait-ul-Midras, where they would recite the Torah,
worship and educate themselves.
The Prophet emphasized in many letters to his emissaries that religious
institutions should not be harmed.ツ Here in a letter addressed to his emissary
to the religious leaders of Saint Catherine in Mount Sinai who has sought the
protection of the Muslims:
窶弋his is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who
adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.ツ Verily I, the servants,
the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens;
and by God! ツI hold out against anything that displeases them.ツ No compulsion
is to be on them.ツ Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor
their monks from their monasteries.ツ No one is to destroy a house of their
religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims窶 houses.ツ
Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God窶冱 covenant and disobey His
Prophet.ツ Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all
that they hate.ツ No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to
fight.ツ The Muslims are to fight for them.ツ If a female Christian is married
to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval.ツ She is not to be
prevented from visiting her
church to pray.ツ Their churches are declared to be protected.ツ They are
neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their
covenants.ツ No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the
Last Day (end of the world).窶拏1]
ツ
As one can see, this Charter consisted of several clauses covering all important
aspects of human rights, including such topics as the protection of minorities
living under Islamic rule, freedom of worship and movement, freedom to appoint
their own judges and to own and maintain their property, exemption from military
service, and the right to protection in war.
ツ
On another occasion, the Prophet received a delegation of sixty Christians from
the region of Najran, then a part of Yemen, at his mosque.ツ When the time for
their prayer came, they faced the direction of east and prayed.ツ The Prophet
ordered that they be left in their state and not harmed.
Politics
There are also examples in the life of the Prophet in which he cooperated
between with people of other faiths in the political arena as well.ツ He
selected a non-Muslim, Amr-ibn Umaiyah-ad-Damri, as an ambassador to be sent to
Negus, the King of Ethiopia.
ツ
These are only some of the examples of the Prophet窶冱 tolerance of other
faiths.ツ Islam recognizes that there are a plurality of religions on this
earth, and gives the right to individuals to choose the path which they believe
to be true.ツ Religion is not to be, and was never, forced upon an individual
against their own will, and these examples from the life of the Prophet are an
epitome of the verse of the Quran which promotes religious tolerance and sets
the guideline for the Muslims窶 interaction with people of other faiths.ツ God
says:
窶懌ヲThere is no compulsion in religion窶ヲ窶 (Quran 2:256)

Most photographers dream of someday having their ideal photography studio. Of
course the dream wouldn't be complete without a full complement of photography
studio equipment, props, backgrounds, natural light, and lots of open space.
That's the dream. It's almost a "build it and they will come" approach to
building a photo business, rather than looking at the studio as a resource to
service a growing client base. Committing to open your own photo studio requires
a considerable investment in equipment, time and ongoing overhead. It's a big
step. Before taking the plunge and finding yourself completely overwhelmed
paying the ongoing expenses, take a step back to analyze whether that dream
photo studio is a wise investment.
In your analysis critically evaluate the following:
Do you really require studio space to complete your photography assignments? If
a high percentage of your work is done on location, opening a photo studio
likely doesn't make sense. Renting a studio space for the odd time you require
space is a much better use of your resources.
Have you done a cost analysis of what the studio space will really cost?
Depending on where you locate, additional expenses could include: legal costs
for the lease/purchase, renovations and upgrades, new equipment, furniture,
business and property taxes, leasehold improvements, signage, etc, etc. Don't
forget to investigate how many of these "hidden" expenses will crop up once
you've committed to go ahead with opening your own photography studio.
Is there sufficient existing and future demand from your current clients to
justify opening a studio? Basing your decision to open a photo studio solely on
future demand, without having a client base already in place is dangerous.
Do you have an up-to-date business and marketing plan that identifies how the
studio and the ongoing monthly expenses will be met?
How will you compete against your competitors? Have you budgeted sufficient
money for marketing? You'll need to generate ongoing and repeat business once
the studio is open, and that requires a well developed and executed marketing
program.
Location is important. If you only shoot products, and never have clients visit,
you could get away with a less than desirable location. If clients will be
coming in regularly, one of the criteria they will likely use to judge whether
or not to hire you is where your photo studio is located. Asking clients to
visit your studio in a bad part of town or walk up five flights of stairs
because the rent is cheap, is self defeating.
If it makes sense to open a photography studio, identify your needs, before
beginning your search. Want big windows with a west exposure? Write it down.
Easy parking for clients? Write it down. Changing rooms, kitchen facilities,
loading docks, ceiling heights, signage possibilities, etc. should all be
evaluated. If your style of photography requires certain features, make sure you
include it in your "must-have" criteria.
In your search for the perfect space, consider hiring a real estate broker or a
lease broker to short list the best properties. It will save you hours of time
searching.
Write out a list of pros and cons of having your own space, versus renting
versus sharing space with another photographer.
Does it make business sense to open your own photo studio or are you doing it to
stroke your ego?
Going through these questions will help you decide if your dream photo studio
can become a reality or if it's better left as a dream.
Having your own photography studio opens up new possibilities and new markets.
The key to success is to do your homework before you commit.
