I don't think that very much can be done. If someone is adament enough to kill people, they're going to find a way. (That's why security and air travel is nothing but a farce. It's a false sense of security--but that's a different topic.) Anyways, what helps is good training by campus security officers in dealing with situations like this, as they are generally the first responders and possible armed guards in an attempt to neutralize the suspect prior to the police arriving.
