Presentation Overview
------------------------------------------------

Applications are never too fast!  This presentation shows how using
Oracle’s Java Object Cache (JCache) in conjunction with an intelligent
agent can make an application virtually instantaneous.   Oracle’s
Java Object Cache (formerly OCS4J) is a set of Java classes that are
designed to maintain a shareable distributed cache of Java objects.
The cache supports a wide variety of object types including objects
that are memory resident, disk resident, input streams and output streams.
The classes provide a rich set of facilities to load, update,
invalidate, destroy and replace objects.  The backdrop for this
presentation is a real-life application that uses a sophisticated
caching system that incorporates agents for collecting objects on behalf
of a user and a JMS based notification component for ensuring the
objects are always fresh.   An introduction to the architecture of
Oracle’s Java Object Cache and the services is provided.

Jim,

I plan to be there...

Also, Rob Ballard recently asked you to send a message looking for contact
with other companies in the area running (or implementing) Oracle Financials
Apps.  I responded to him.  He said someone from Vulcan responded, too, but
since then, Rob's laptop crashed and he lost all his emails.  Is it possible
to:

1. Repeat the call for Apps users to the email list; or
2. Make a brief announcement at the meeting Thursday?

Thanks.

The Central Alabama Oracle User Group's new book review program officially began
on 8/29.  Here's the how it works:

    1) All books are distributed to reviewers at our monthly meetings.
    2) A $20 cash deposit is required for each book you wish to review.
    3) Each reviewer will be limited to 1 book at a time.
    4) Reviews will be subject to editing and abridgement before being
         placed on
www.caoug.org.
    5) Book publishers will be notified of your reviews of their books
and they may pull the review and use parts or all of it in their
         publications.
    6) Your $20 deposit will only be returned to you after an electronic
review is sent to Jan Jones, our Book Review Program Coordinator,
         at
mailto:JJones@....  Your deposit will be
returned at the next monthly meeting after you submit your review.
    7) You will get to keep any book you review.

If you are interested in reviewing one of the books below, please contact Jan
Jones by email and give her the book title.  Each book will be assigned on a
first come, first served basis.  You will be placed on a waiting list for a
book if someone else has already requested it.  At each meeting, we will begin
at the top of the list and the first person who's present and has their $20

 Dear GAP Leaders,

Per our conversation this morning, below is the stipulation for the Legato Live! registration offer that some of you may have received.
Stipulation: The non-member-rate discount of $480 (giving a price point of $895) is specific to Legato customers who have not attended Live! in the past two years (2001 and 2002).
This promotion was targeted to non-member customers of Legato that had not attended our event in the last two years. The effort was to drive attendance from a new group of individuals not normally likely to attend our event. The email Legato sent did not indicate the stipulation that both IOUG and Legato had agreed upon together.
Legato has been notified of this and will be sending follow up emails to correct any previous assumptions. Thank you,
Kate

ETL - There's a New Sheriff in Town - Oracle

- presented by Arman Rawls of Apex Solutions, Inc.

---------------------------------------------------------

Presentation Overview
---------------------------------------------------------

ETL (Extract, Transformation and Loading) is going
through
a paradigm shift. Previously, ETL was done with tools
outside
the database. Ab Initio, Data Stage and Informatica
were kings
of the ETL world. However, there were major
disadvantages to
this paradigm. Third party ETL tools required a
separate box
because they had no controls on the consumption of CPU
resources.
Third party ETL tools were not integrated into the
database.
This meant that ETL developers became experts in
running the
tool; however, had no knowledge on how the tool
related to the
database. In order to create fast and efficient ETL
processes,
you needed to know both.

Oracle 9i is changing the ETL paradigm. This
presentation will
cover these Oracle 9i ETL features and explain why you
want to
join the paradigm shift and do ETL in the database.

April CAOUG Meeting

(Please RSVP so that we can get an accurate count
for lunch.)

========================================================

ETL - There's a New Sheriff in Town - Oracle

- presented by Arman Rawls of Apex Solutions, Inc.
========================================================

DATE: Thursday, April 17th
TIME: 11:30 am
PLACE: EnteGreat
LUNCH: Provided by Apex Solutions, Inc.
RSVP REQUIRED: Yes

---------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS
---------------------------------------------------------

EnteGreat University is on the first floor of the 1900
building at International Park, just off I-459 on
Acton Road. There is a hot link to a map at
http://www.entegreat.com/eg_contactus.htm

---------------------------------------------------------

Presentation Overview
---------------------------------------------------------

ETL (Extract, Transformation and Loading) is going
through a paradigm shift. Previously, ETL was done
with tools outside the database. Ab Initio, Data Stage
and Informatica were kings of the ETL world. However,
there were major disadvantages to this paradigm. Third
party ETL tools required a separate box because they
had no controls on the consumption of CPU resources.
Third party ETL tools were not integrated into the
database. This meant that ETL developers became
experts in running the tool; however, had no knowledge
on how the tool related to the database. In order to
create fast and efficient ETL processes, you needed to
know both.

Oracle 9i is changing the ETL paradigm. This
presentation will cover these Oracle 9i ETL features
and explain why you want to join the paradigm shift
and do ETL in the database.

Oracle 9i Dataguard - "Is Standby Ready for

- presented by Rick Goudeau
========================================================

DATE: Tuesday, May 20th (NOTE CHANGE FROM NORM!!!)
TIME: 11:30 am
PLACE: EnteGreat
LUNCH: Brown Bag (i.e. bring your own)
RSVP REQUIRED: No

DIRECTIONS

Acton Road.
There is a hot link to a map at
http://www.entegreat.com/eg_contactus.htm

---------------------------------------------------------
Presentation Overview
---------------------------------------------------------

Oracle has supported standby databases since version
7.3. Dataguard in Oracle9i has extended and improved
the capabilities of standby databases. Dataguard has
integrated standby database processing much closer to
the Oracle kernel. Some areas of improvement are:
standby control files better integrated with database
startup process, monitoring archive log file
transmission, allowing redo log changes be recorded as
they occur rather than at archive time, automatic
propagation of control file changes, primary and
secondary site role reversal.

The presentation will review several components of a
Dataguard environment: Dataguard configuration, standy
database creation (using rman), managed recovery and
log transmission services, using standby database for
read only processes, and database failover operations.

Presentation Overview
---------------------------------------------------------

Conventional Oracle performance tuning relies very
heavily on measuring
and optimizing the Buffer Cache Hit Ratio. Many DBAs
do their best to get a 99% or better hit ratio, only
to discover that the performance of their database
isn't really improving along with the hit ratio. End
users still complain about bad response time. Why is
that? And is there a better way of tuning?

application management and
