Subject: Oracle8i DBA OCP Exam Retirement December 31, 2004!

http://www.oracle.com/index.html

May 1, 2004

Dear Valued Oracle University and Certification Program Customer,

On May 1, 2004, Oracle announced plans to retire the Oracle8i Database Administrator Certified Professional exams. In accordance with our stated retirement policy, we are hereby giving you notice of Oracle’s intention to retire these certification tracks. As of December 31, 2004, the core certification exams for the Oracle8i DBA OCP track will no longer be available.

Oracle will continue to honor and endorse those candidates who have earned their Oracle8i Database Administrator Certified Professional credential. Oracle8i DBA OCPs will continue to receive all benefits and communications as well as access to OCP resources relevant to their certification.

All OCP Candidates currently pursuing the Oracle8i DBA OCP track will have until December 31, 2004 to complete the required core DBA exams.

After December 31st, 2004, the following 4 exams will no longer be available:

  • Exam 1Z0-023 Oracle8i: Architecture and Administration
  • Exam 1Z0-024 Oracle8i: Performance and Tuning
  • Exam 1Z0-025 Oracle8i: Backup and Recovery
  • Exam 1Z0-026 Oracle8i: Network Administration

Candidates who fail OCP exams may retake them only after a 30-day waiting period as long as it does not fall beyond the retirement date. Since the exams will be unavailable after December 31, 2004, candidates should plan to take the exams no later than November 15, 2004 to allow sufficient time in case a retake is necessary.

Oracle encourages Oracle8ii DBA OCPs to upgrade their credential by taking Exam 1Z0-030 Oracle9i New Features for Administrators. Candidates who pass this exam will earn an Oracle9i Database Administrator OCP status.

The following upgrade exams will NOT retire and will remain available after December 31, 2004:

  • Exam 1Z0-035 Oracle9i DBA New Features for Oracle7.3 and Oracle8 OCPs
(One exam for Oracle7.3 and Oracle8 DBA OCPs to upgrade their OCP credential to Oracle9
    i)
  • Exam 1Z0-020 Oracle8i: New Features for Administrators
    Exam 1Z0-030 Oracle9
i: Database: New Features for Administrators

If you have any questions regarding the retirement of the Oracle8i DBA OCP exams and certification tracks, please contact Oracle at ocpexam_ww@.... Additionally, you may visit the Oracle Certification Program web site at http://www.oracle.com/education/certification for further information. To find information regarding Oracle training in your area please visit: http://www.oracle.com/education.

Thank you for your investment in Oracle technology and for your interest in developing your technical skills. We appreciate and value the commitment you have made to become an Oracle Certified Professional and wish you continued success in your career development efforts.

Sincerely,

Oracle Certification Program

Did you know that our Oracle user group can get books
for you to review and keep? If your book budget is
running short, this is a good way to earn the books
you need.

Please let me know if you have a book that you'd like
to earn by doing a review. It doesn't matter who the
publisher is or the technology related topic, just let
me know what your interested in and I'll try to get
it.

I've included a couple of links below that will help
you as you write your reviews.

Peace,
Jim Hill

We have an excellent opportunity to host a meeting with the President of Oracle on September 16 from 12:00pm to 1:30pm.  But in order to do this, we have to determine the level of interest ASAP.  If you would be willing and able to bring or send someone from your company who has a major impact on database purchasing decisions (i.e. IT Director, Technology Manager, CIO, CFO, etc.) please reply back to this message today or tomorrow and let us know how many you think you could bring to the meeting.

See details below...

Thanks.

We have an excellent opportunity to have the president of Oracle speak at our Users Group Meeting.

This would be a great time to have not only the DBA’s and Developers, but also upper management to attend.

This will afford those that are responsible for justifying Oracle, to ask questions of the president directly.

To make this possible we would need to have a large turnout.

The tentative date would be September 16, 12:00pm to 1:30pm.

Can we get an email out to everyone asking them to reply with the number of people that will be able to attend from their organization?

Contact me if you have any questions or if there is anything I can do on my end to facilitate this.

Thanks,

a signing of his book, A Good Hard Kick in the Ass: Basic Training

Send Email Send Email

RSVP's Required (count for lunch needed, RSVP by
replying to this message):

On Thursday, August 18th at 11:30 Kenny Smith of
Cnetics will be doing a live "Get on the Grid"
presention for the Central Alabama Oracle User Group.
Lunch will be provided.

We will be meeting at the Energen Conference Center at
the Energen headquarters on 6th Ave. North and Richard
Arrington Blvd. Parking is provided on the top level
of the Energen parking deck which is adjacent to the
building.

I've included a description of the presentation that
Cnetics provided. You can see a picture of the
hardware if you follow the link.

Our "Get on the Grid" presentation discusses and
demonstrates a fully configured, portable Oracle 10g
RAC system running on HP equipment. Our portable
systems called "Test tRACks" are multi-bootable on
Linux, Windows and HP-UX depending on the hardware
configuration. (For more information on our portable
Oracle units, visit
http://www.cnetics.com/RACoverview.shtml.)

How the presentation works:

Our presentation gives attendees an opportunity to
learn about and get hands-on with 10g RAC. We will
bring a portable Real Application Cluster system with
a wireless access point. We describe the hardware and
software configuration and then demonstrate important
RAC features such as transaction application failover,
load balancing, and scalability on the live system. We
then allow attendees to login via their laptops and
"play" with Linux, Windows, Oracle, clustered file
systems & clustered servers.

We've made this presentation at the Georgia Oracle
User Group Conference and the International Oracle
User Group Conference. We've also presented
"Get on the Grid" to groups such the Columbus Linux
Users Group, the Atlanta Unix Users Group and the East
Tennessee Oracle Users Group with great success.

You can also read Kenny's professional bio at
http://www.cnetics.com/bios.shtml.

I think this will be a great presentation and I hope
to see you all there. You can just reply to this
message to RSVP.

Jim Hill

Dear Jim,

As an active Oracle User Group, we want to extend to you and your members a unique opportunity to dine with a renowned PL/SQL expert and author—Steven Feuerstein.

Attached is a detailed e-mail explaining this opportunity, for you to forward to your members or print out for other upcoming events.  Each week until the conference, we will be selecting a winner to have dinner with Steven, so the sooner your members register for OPP 2005, the more chances they have to win.

Additional information on OPP 2005 is available at http://www.oracleplsqlprogramming.com, and materials can be mailed to you to promote this event.

Please feel free to contact Robyn at 910.452.0006 or robyn@....

Best regards,

Robyn Drew

We're considering bringing in a company in November
(tentatively on the 17th) that specializes in dealing
with the complexities of Oracle software licensing.
Please read the attached info sheet and let me know if
you would attend a mid-day luncheon about this topic.
Note: I'm not asking for an RSVP at this time, but we
do need to guage the level of interest.

Also, I'd like to send a special invitation to those
in your companies with budgetary responsibilities for
Oracle software purchases. I think they would have a
special interest in this topic. Just send me their
names and email addresses and I'll send out the
invitation.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Jim Hill

A couple of months back my new management came to me
with questions about Oracle licensing and I had to
confess that I didn't know very much about it. Since
then I have done a lot of research and found out that
Oracle license compliance is a very detailed and
complex subject. On top of that complexity, you add
account rep relationships and contract negotiations
and you've got a web that can get pretty tangled.

On Thursday, November 17th at 11:30 Scott Rosenberg,
President and CEO of Miro Consulting Inc, will be
coming in to help us untangle this web.

I think all of you will find that this is a
fascinating topic that will help to prepare you for
when your management comes to you with licensing
questions. Also, for those individuals in your
organizations who have budgetary responsibilities for
Oracle and those who are tasked with licensing
compliancy, this event will be of special interest.
In fact, I'm attaching a special invitation for your
management to come, eat lunch and learn all about
unraveling the mysteries of Oracle licensing.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 and we will begin the
presentation shortly thereafter. We will be meeting
in the Energen Conference Center as we did a couple of
months ago and I promise to get you better
instructions about how to park for free in the Energen
deck.

Please RSVP as soon as you can because we anticipate a
large crowd and we need to make sure we are prepared
for lunch and the presentation. You can RSVP by
replying to this message and giving me a count.

Sincerely,
Jim Hill
Central Alabama Oracle User Group
