The TechCouncil, representing over half of the 34 tech user groups in our region, has convened once again to plan our TechMixer 2, presented by Savela Solutions. The event is scheduled in less than a month on Thursday evening, September 21st and will be held this time on the 3rd floor of the McWane Science Center. Both the event and the parking are FREE. As of now, 17 user groups are confirmed and 17 companies have stepped up to sponsor the event... which means even more reasons to attend again or for the first time!
Put the date into your calendar application today and register online using our ClickToAttend page (it will automatically create an Outlook calendar entry). Keep checking www.TechMixer.org for the latest details of the event as the planning committee continues to set the details. We'd like to see YOU there in September!

Play in the City with TechBirmingham and Catalyst on September 23rd!

Urban Reversi is a game blending speed, strategy, opponents, performance art challenges, and a photo scavenger hunt. As mentioned in our e-mail blast a week ago, TechBirmingham has teamed with Catalyst to stage 3 weekends of games, thanks to the generous funding from the Verizon Foundation.  We are bringing a small team of volunteers to New York City this weekend to stage the game at the CONFLUX Festival, a convention of sorts for "contemporary psychogeography where international artists, technologists, urban adventurers and the public put investigations of everyday city life into practice on the streets."

The game of "Urban Reversi" turns city streets into a large-scale urban game loosely based on the board game of Othello. Challenges are in the form of performance art using a combination of noun, verb, and adjective randomly assigned to the team when they arrive at an intersection. Contestants must think quickly on their feet, using wireless technology and their wit to win their match against another team.

All details and a history of the game development can be found on the collaborator's site... http://www.TechWalk.org. Photos from the past games' challenges can be found at http://www.flickr.com/groups/urbanreversi/.

We hope you can come play the game in Birmingham on Saturday, 23 September at 10am during the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival... after you recover from attending the TechMixer event on Thursday, of course. Meet inside the Harbert Center at 9:30am for orientation.  If you have a MotoQ phone, bring it with you to help us increase the number of teams that can play at the same time.

If you can't make it, watch it LIVE on the web... the correct URL will be displayed on the TechWalk website once we activate the game's server that day.  You can track the progress this Saturday morning shortly after 11am while we run the game in Brooklyn, New York and again around 10am on the 23rd of September when we run the game in downtown Birmingham.

Title: Oracle Wait Interface: A Practical Guide to Performance Diagnostics & Tuning

Authors: Richmond Shee, Kiritkumar Deshpande, K Gopalakrishnan

ISBN: 0-07-222729-X

Reviewer: Raj Patel

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is a well organized and well written book. It is a practical guide as well as good reference book. The authors make a serious attempt introducing the wait interface. They have tried to make dry subject little more interesting by making humorous comment about speed in the first chapter. It complements nicely with Oracle manuals.

The verdict: Recommended.

Rating: 9 (10 being highest)

Presentation Overview
---------------------------------------------------------
Topic: Welcome to My Nightmare – The Common Performance Errors in Oracle Databases
Presenter: Michael R. Ault, Quest Software

Abstract:
Databases grow and change as new features are added and old ones removed or changed. However, even as things change, they remain the same in many respects. We still must index properly, set memory settings correctly and specify proper hardware. You would think that by now everyone would have a pretty good idea what an average configuration for an Oracle small, medium and large database would be, but unfortunately these classifications also undergo mutation. It wasn’t too long ago that if you used several hundred megabytes of disks you had a large database. Now of course large databases are in the terabyte and larger size range. This makes setting tuning guidelines for Oracle databases somewhat of a moving target where the rules change almost as fast as you can derive them.

Given a changing environment for tuning Oracle is the only constant this presentation will outline the major issues found in the last few years while tuning several dozen different client databases in addition to methods for determining set points that take into account this changing beast that is Oracle.

Thanks to all of you who were able to help with e-Cycling Days a couple of weeks ago.  On the day that I worked there was a steady flow of people dropping off computers/electronics and we completely filled 4 large "Metro" moving trucks.

Thanks again.

Given a changing environment for tuning Oracle is the only constant this presentation will outline the ! major issues found in the last few years while tuning several dozen different client databases in addition to methods for determining set points that take into account this changing beast that is Oracle.

If you have any data, including data in sys tables, that uses the data types WITH TIME ZONE and is in one of the follow time zones, it will have to be converted:  HST, EST, MST, EST5EDT, MST7MDT, CST6CDT, PST8PDT.  This is due to the fact that the time zone ID is different in the updated time zone files.  You will get ORA-1882's if you don't do the conversion.

NOTE: This conversion will have to be done regardless of the time period that the data falls within.  See Note:414590.1
