Here's how Kris Stanley describes the presentation he will be doing tomorrow.  Please reply to this message and let me know if you plan to attend.  All the details are below.

I plan on discussing a general overview of BI from an
end user perspective and from an IT perspective then discussing how
Infinity went about laying out our goals for a BI initiative. I discuss the
choice in OBIEE as our product, steps to achieve our desired goals, keys to a
successful implementation and benefits received. Basically, I walk you
through beginning to end with our first BI initiative. I have about 30
minutes of material, so I hope time is not an issue, because I wanted to
leave it open for some Q/A when I'm done.

Please reply by Friday if you are planning on attending.  NetApp wants to get a firm number by then.

I suspect one thing NetApp will be discussing is "deduplication".  Here's how it was discussed in the April 13th issue of Information Week:

Deduplication systems find and eliminate duplicate data by dividing files into chunks and looking for chunks that have the same data. The major difference is how they chunk data. The simplest method is to use fixed size chunks like disk blocks.

NetApp's Write Anywhere File Layout, or WAFL, builds files as lists of blocks. WAFL calculates a checksum of each block, and stores it with the data, whether by a schedule or by an event like a disk reaching a utilization threshold. Blocks that have the same checksum are compared to see if they contain the same data. If they do, WAFL deletes one block and modifies the metadata of the file where the block resided. WAFL will be released as a free software upgrade later this year.

Thanks.
Jim

It's not too early to RSVP.

Confio software is helping the CAOUG bring Oracle tuning expert and author Craig
Shallahamer to town on Monday, August 24th. This link will give you a nice
overview of who Craig is:
http://www.zoominfo.com/people/Shallahamer_Craig_11176274.aspx. I think this is

Did you know we have another list for job postings called caoug-jobs?  Normally I wouldn't post a job opening to this list, but since Bob Schlemmer asked me to I decided it would be a good way to remind you about our caoug-jobs list.  In fact, I just posted another job opening on caoug-jobs.

If you'd like to sign up for the list, I believe this will get you to a page where you can do that:

(WARNING: This message contains friendly banter.)

Hey, Craig Shallahamer (tuning expert and Oracle author) is a great headliner
for our next event on Monday, August 24th @ 11:00am, but Dean Richards from
Confio Software isn't too bad as a warm-up act. In fact, last night I learned
that Dean Richards will be doing the local SQL Server user group gig on Tuesday
evening. But here's my question: Why would you want leftover Tuna Helper when
you can get fresh made? And on top of that, with a database with REAL wait
event tracking and where the Confio software was born?

Don't miss this event. We will start promptly at 11:00am and lunch will be
provided by a local organization that I can't reveal just yet.

Please just reply to this message to RSVP. (Yes, even if you think I know you
are coming and even if you are involved in the event in some way, but not if you
have already RSVP'ed.)

====================================================
Tuna Helper - Proven Process for Tuning SQL
Dean Richards, Confio Software
====================================================

Many DBAs and Developers are faced with tuning poorly performing SQL statements.
However, many tuning projects fail because the process being used is
inefficient. This presentation will walk through a process Confio Software uses
with great success and will include topics such as: indexing strategies, use of
histograms, SQL wait event data, column selectivity and several more that will
help you succeed on future tuning projects.

Jim,

I'll do two presentations, each around 45-60 minutes, but I can easily adjust. First I'll do the latching presentation and then the response time presentation.

Also, I'll be giving away two of my new books, Oracle Performance Firefighting. And I'll provide every attendee with a 25% discount coupon if they order the book on-line.

Title: Serialization Control; The lock, latch, & mutex

For a high performing Oracle system, serialization is death. That's why understanding, detecting, and resolving serialization issues are extremely important. Many DBAs feel there is little you can do when serialization issues raise their ugly head. Not true! I have found once one understands the general latch and mutex algorithms and equipped with Oracle's memory architectures and internals, latch/mutex contention solutions become very apparent. This presentation provides an in-depth look into memory serialization control, how Oracle's algorithms ensure the necessary serialization, and how we can can get involved to ensure serialization issues do not remain a problem.

Title: Introduction to Applied Response Time Analysis

All performance analysis begins with a solid understanding of response time analysis; its components, sources of data, and mathematics. This presentation will introduce you to how response time analysis provides the performance analyst with a very comfortable and confident way to communicate the current and future performance situation. A template and an interactive response time graph will be used to help understand how we, as performance analysts, can represent and influence the performance situation in our favor.

Craig.

Lonnie,

I'm excited for you.  Please let me know when you get your event scheduled.  I'd like to mention it to our group.  I think we have some people on our mailing list from up your way.

We usually coordinate the meal.  That way we can make sure we have variety and quality.  One thing we always try to do is remember the vegetarians.  With the number of Indians who work with Oracle, there are always a few vegetarians in the crowd.

We just tell the caterer that a vendor will be paying for the lunch and ask them how it should be handled.  Sometimes they want a call with a credit card number prior to delivering the food and sometime they just want someone to meet them there with payment.  They usually don't mind you changing the headcount until about lunch on the day before the event.

We almost never rent a facility.  There is almost always a member whose company is happy to provide a facility and the group members seem to prefer meeting at the local companies places of business.  Things to watch out for:
1) You will need computer projection
2) It's nice to have an audio system
3) The vendor may need Internet access
4) Free parking is preferred
5) Strict security can be a problem
6) Food from an outside caterer should not be restricted

We have had a few occasions where a vendor has preferred renting a facility, but those have been rare.

I hope this info is helpful.

Sincerely,
Jim Hill

Jim,

Thanks a again for your answers (below). We are putting the framework into place. Our new website is http://www.rcoug.org

We have been in touch with both the IOUG & Oracle and are looking to get an event going in early 2010 (Jan?)

I did have a few other questions:

1. When a vendor pays for lunch, do you coordinate where the food comes from and how the bill is paid? Or does the vendor handle this all on their own and just show up the day of the event with the food? I assume you just give them an estimated count on attendees.

2. Same for the facility. If we have a vendor pay for rental space (i.e. hotel conf room), do you just tell them what hotel, estimated # of attendees, & what day and they handle the rest?

I think my company is going to pay for the rental space this time around, but I want to start planning for the next quarterly meeting already.

Thanks Jim!

Here are my questions:

1. Is the BHAM group incorporated?

Nope.  We decided it was too much trouble for the benefits.  Due to our operating model, it isn't necessary.

2. Do you collect dues? If so, how much? Also, if so, how do you handle paying taxes?

No dues.  Just subscribe to the mailing list and you are in.  Come to the events if you want.

3. Is the group using a board of directors (pres, vp, sec, tres)? If so, how did you go about having the first election?

This usually isn't hard because you usually have a handful of dedicated volunteers.  We have found that we didn't need traditional officers, but rather people to head up the functions you need to accomplish.  Here's what we found we needed: 1) A leader to keep things going, help the group determine its direction, be the communication focal point, etc.  2) An event coordinator, 3) A facilities coordinator, 4) a web presence director

The more critical thing is to determine how new officers will be selected and how the transition will work.  We didn't do a good job of this and I've been leading the group for about 12 years now.

4. How hard has it been to get vendors/speakers for your events?

This isn't hard at all.  The most critical thing is to realize that you have something that is very valuable to vendors: your targeted contacts.  That is like gold to them and they will pay for events just to get at your contacts.

Here are our rules:  a) Our list is never sold or given away, b) the vendor only gets contact info for those who come to the event and choose to give their information, c) the vendor must pay for lunch and we encourage them to bring some give-aways.

We also have presentations by members and those are "bring a sack lunch" events OR another vendor will sponsor the lunch.  The sponsoring vendors for these member presentations are often recruiting companies.

5. How hard has it been to pay for rental space and catering?
We never pay for the facility.  It is always donated by some member's company or organization.  Sometimes the vendor will choose to pay for a facility.

6. Do you use the IOUG insurance program?
No.  We have no need of it (as far as I know).

I don't have a doubt that there will be interest in starting a group here. I just want to make sure I understand what I am getting myself into by volunteering to get the process going.

Database Change Management and Compliance Made Easy

DATE: Thursday, June 17, 2010

---------------------------------------------------------
Presentation Overview
---------------------------------------------------------

Topic: Database Change Management and Compliance Made Easy with DB Maestro

Presenter: Dan Davis

Abstract: Software Configuration Management (SCM) tools were developed in the
mid 1980's to provide a process for software development and maintenance,
automatically provide a complete audit trail of changes during an application's
life cycle and minimize risk during the development and change processes. As
database technology developed and the database became a more integral part of
delivering application functionality, these tools were not extended to provide
the same value to the database developers and administrators. Various software
tools, under the general label of `Compare and Sync' were developed to help the
database specialist cope with their change processes. With the advent of various
compliance requirements on the change process, this void of complete SCM
functionality became more apparent. The presentation to the Central Alabama OUG
will review this area from a functional and value standpoint and introduce a new
generation of database change technology that fills this need.
