My friend and former co-worker, Paru Puttanna, has started the Birmingham Extract, Transform, and Load (BETL) user group and their 2nd meeting is tomorrow night. If you'd like to know more about ETL or network with others who do ETL work, this may be an event you would like to attend...

While not Oracle related, I thought there could be someone in our group who could benefit from this session….
Daxko is hosting a Geeks-n-Grub session NEXT WEDNESDAY at lunch so please forward this to the software engineers that you know. We’d like to make this a quarterly event.
Please note there is a RSVP request since we’re ordering pizza.

Are you using HTML5 today in your websites and web applications?
If no, why not? HTML5 and CSS3 aren't set to reach the candidate recommendation stage till 2012 and aren't slated to be complete until 2022. But why wait to see the new features and capabilities?
"I have to support older browsers," you say. No problem! What if we could take a trip into the future and bring back the features of HTML5 and CSS3 so we could use them today? In fact, what if we could use the new features today and still support older browsers... even IE6.
I can't guarantee a trip into the future, but in this presentation, we'll take a look at how you can use the features of HTML5 and CSS3 in your websites today (with or without a time-traveling DeLorean).
What: Free info session with lunch
Speaker: Todd Miranda, founder of Bug.NET Birmingham User Group & Microsoft MVP
When: Wednesday, June 29 at 11:15am
Where: NEW Daxko Headquarters, 600 University Park, Suite 500, Homewood (Driving Directions)
Daxko | 600 University Park Place | Suite 500 | Birmingham | AL | 35209

Going Beyond RAC: Increasing Scalability and Reliability with Data Replication
Abstract:
Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) is a powerful infrastructure. It enables database scalability, which is useful as data volumes grow exponentially. However, RAC has its limitations in availability, performance, platform flexibility, geography and cost. There are other options when it comes to scalability needs.
Using Oracle replication instead of RAC or in conjunction with RAC enables cost- effective horizontal scalability without the drawbacks of RAC alone.Technologies for real-time data replication enable organizations to have one or more copies of their Oracle databases, which reduces risk and downtime while improving performance and infrastructure options.
Reduce Downtime During Migrations & Upgrades
Abstract:
Although they reap long-term business benefits, migrations are a major availability challenge that companies face today.
Some typical migration situations include:
·Data center &/or server consolidation
·Retiring older technology
·Platform version and application upgrades
Perhaps your company has participated in a merger or acquisition and is experiencing a related data center consolidation. Or you may be considering a change in hardware platform, operating system or application upgrade. How can you reduce downtime in these situations and allow business to continue while the migration activities occur?
Enhance High Availability & Disaster Recovery
Abstract:
Companies need to protect their critical data and files in case of disaster. A loss of data could trigger severe corporate hardships so keeping these systems highly available 24x7 is of the essence. There are many technologies which can accomplish this and some are even “free”. The long-term network costs are where the real spend occurs.
·Can the same hardware can be used to reduce downtime for planned maintenance activities.
·Ensuring that the DR solution will be available when needed requires testing which often involves taking the DR solution offline which can be a costly exercise. Without regular testing, the probability of the DR solution working degrades with time. How to achieve a DR solution that is continuously tested and always available for fail over.
·Often the time to recover from a disaster will seriously affect a company’s bottom line. Fastest methods available for fail over to the DR site in various configurations including peer-to-peer where there is simultaneous access to both databases.
The image of disaster is often interpreted to mean a site based event where the computing infrastructure is physically destroyed. Studies have shown that the vast majority of data loss is not due to these kinds of events. Instead, incidents such as a table drop, block level corruption or even the loss of a data file are some of the leading causes of data loss.
Offload Reporting to an Operational Data Store
Abstract:
Many businesses face conflicting business needs: the need for the fastest possible response time for performing transactions, yet effective and timely decision support and reporting is critical to remain competitive.
These divergent activities often slow the production system to unacceptably low levels especially during peak reporting times such as week, month or quarter end. How to solve this problem by providing a current and separate target system that can be used as an operational data store for reporting and billing during those peak periods. Transaction processing can continue at the same performance levels and reports can be run with fresh data during regular business hours.
This horizontal scaling strategy allows transaction processing to run without competing with constant queries for reporting needs. Regardless of how much reporting is asked of the system, it will have no effect on response time for your customers and internal users.
When a single replica does not provide the required scaling, additional replicas can be brought on line to further scale and increase performance of reports.
Our next Central Alabama Oracle user group event will be on Wed, 10/17 from 11:30 to 1:00 at Proassurance. Quest will be sponsoring our lunch and providing the topic of the day. Please mark your calendar today and watch for details in the near future.
It's been a while since we last met and it's high time that we get things kicking again in the Oracle user world! We're going to kick things off with a lunch and presentation by Quest Software (now part of Dell). Please reply to this message to RSVP and reserve your spot. NOTE: Please also let me know if you'd like a vegetarian lunch.
Here are the details:
Mark your calendars for The Oracle User Group on Wednesday, October 17th from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.
We will be meeting at Proassurance so please respond with the names of everyone you are bringing and I'll pass them on to the building security so that they will be ready to let you in without any problems. See details below.
Lunch will be catered by a fine local dining establishment, so please reply by email letting us know you are coming. Also, please let me know if you would like a vegetarian lunch.
