The best way to combat Global Warming is to encourage farmers to cultivate deep-rooted perennial grass species and crops that can lock vast amounts of carbon up in the soil. The Carbon Coalition Against Global Warming is a farmers' movement which aims to have agricultural soils recognised as a carbon sink and traded as credits on the global emission market. Soil is the world's largest carbon sink. Soil is also the sink which can sequested carbon the fastest, providing rapid absorption of atmospheric carbon whereas trees are relatively slow to sequester. By rewarding farmers for sequestering carbon in soils, the community would also be providing an incentive to them for conserving the natural resource base because only rich, well-managed soils can sequester carbon. Therefore carbon credits could dramatically reduce problems of soil erosion and salinity as well as damage to waterways from silting. The Carbon Coalition welcomes farmers and non-farmers who share a love and respect for the soil that gives us life.
