TO BE POSTED
Dear colleagues
Beginning in August we will have new stuff added to the Caribbean PT
Web Page, with the new address at utig site. Some improvements will be as
follow:
1. A comparison of L. Cretaceous and E. Tertiary recontruction from
different authors.
2. Reconstruction as a whole by some authors. (Here we need your
imput. If you want to see your model in the page, plesase send a compact
version to Robert Rogers (rrogers@..., so he will be able to add
it
to the site).
3. We will have an updated version of references for Caribbean area
thanks to Lisa Gahagan. She is willing to keep updating the list, but will
need your support. In the web page you will find the way she needs the
references of your papers as they became published, so she can easely add them
to the list. Please we only want published papers (no abstract no unpublished
reports).
4. You will find a new version of the project proposal for UNESCO/IUGS.
We will be sending this proposal to UNESCO in September, 1999. I urgently need
new letters of support, just over the email. Just say that you are willing to
participate in the Project and sent the email to iturralde@... before
September 15.
5. In the webpage we will have a list of persons, email address and
projects ongoing in the Caribbean area, according to the information sent by
many of you. If somebody else wants to be included in this list, please report
to me and to rrogers at your early convenience. A single parragraph is
sufficient.
6. Please, after reading the new version of our webpage, send us any
comment or information that you think must be included.
7. Regarding the Symposium about the Caribbean Plate that we are
organizing for the 31 IGC in Rio, it is my pleasure to inform you that we have
already two special presentations, one by Pindell and Barrett and another by M.
Meschede. I am also working with Lisa Gahagan in an animated version of a
Caribbean plate model. Please see the second circular for more information.
8. Unfortunately, despite every effort, we have had few scientist from
the Central American and northern South American areas joining the project and
group. We hope that this will change in the future.
This is all for now. In due time you will be informed when the updated
webpage will become available.
Please do not contact me at this address, as I am traveling tomorrow. I am not
wired right now!
best regards
Manuel Iturralde-Vinent

Manuel,
You spent 25 years studying Cuban geology, and you did not see those
beautiful volcanoes? Now the question is who had too much Cuban Rum?
Probably the guy does not even know where the island is.
Cheers,

I have been told by a former Cuban resident that as a child he had to evacuate a town he was living in to get away from a volcano eruption. Can anyone tell me about this volcano.

latinoamericanos vecinos (principalmente Colombia). Esta actividad cubre los
siguientes campos:

y
- estamos colaborando con el Dpt. of Civil Engineering and Geological
Sciences (CEGEOS) of the University of Notre Dame-Indiana (tesis doctoral de
srta.
dicho margen. Particularmente, estoy interesado en las intrusivas basálticas
de menos de 20 ma.

The evolution of the Caribbean Plate deformed margins (Mesozoic-Early
Tertiary) based on the Tectonic and Petrology of the pericaribbean
ophiolitic units.
Area of the project:
The main caribbean margins in Northern Venezuela (Sistema Montanoso del
Caribe), Guatemala (Motagua Suture Zone), Cuba, Hispaniola (Central and
Northern Cordilleras), Costarica (S. Elena, Nicoya complexes).
Scope of the project:
To study the main sectors of the caribbean margins which involve
ophiolitic units from the structural and petrological point of view, in the
aim to better reconstruct the magma affinities, the deformation pattern
and the metamorphic history for a model of the gedynamic evolution of the
Plate since the protocaribbean ( Jurassic-Cretaceous) up to the eocaribbean
(Cretaceous-Paleocene) phases.

Manuel:
I am working on several projects:
1. Together with Simon Mitchell who is remapping the Central Inlier
(cretaceous) of Jamaica, we are conducting mineral and rock chemistry
analyses of the volcanic rocks in the inlier.
2. Richard Robertson and I are mapping and analysing the pre-Soufriere
volcanic rocks of St. Vincent. This is for Richard's PhD.
3. I am also examining microprobe data I have for the Sans Souci volcanic
rocks of the Northern range of Trinidad as well as REE whole rock
analyses.

Hola Manuel:
resultan sumamente enriquecedores.
Un abrazo, Zulma

Dear Manuel,
My colleagues and I are working on the following projects related to
Tobago, West Indies:
1) Petrology and structural geology of Tobago, West Indies--to be submitted
in Fall 1999 for consideration as a Special Paper of the Geological Society
of America.
2) Geologic Map of Tobago, West Indies (1:25,000) includes extensive field
trip guide--to be submitted for the Geological Society of America Map &
Chart Series in July 1999.
3) Petrology and petrochemistry of arc-related gabbros from Tobago, West
Indies--will be submitted for a special issue of the American Mineralogist
in October 1999.
4) Biostratigraphy of the Tobago Volcanic Group (mid-Cretaceous oceanic-arc
sequence)--ammonites and Radiolaria, hopefully this manuscript will be
submitted for publication during Fall 1999.
All field work and laboratory work is completed on these projects; we are
totally in the write-up stage for our work on Tobago. If you need more
detailed information, I would be glad to provide it.

Dear Manuel,
I hope that things are going well for you.
I am starting a project in the northeastern Caribbean with Uri tenBrink,
here at USGS Woods Hole. The study aims at understanding the nature of
plate motions, the shallow and deep coupling between the plates, and at
mapping the resultant shallow and deep plate boundary deformation. This
project plan follows the recommendations of a workshop held in San Juan PR
on March 23,24, 1999, which was funded by the Coastal and Marine Geology
and Earthquake Hazards Programs of the USGS; a summary of the workshop
results is available at the website:
http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/puertoricoworkshop/
I'll put a few paragraphs from our project proposal below. i don't
guarantee that all of this work will receive funding, but the new project
initiation was approved by the USGS.
Our long-term objective is to develop a consistent model for the
development and evolution of the Puerto Rico Region in order to provide the
understanding needed to approach the problems of assessment, education and
mitigation of tectonic hazards in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
The Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands area has a significant seismic risk (Ms 7.8
on 7/29/1943; Ms 8.0 on 8/4/1946 followed by four major aftershocks of Ms
7.6, 7.0, 7.3, 7.1 between 1946 and 1953). Large tsunamis have also hit
Puerto Rico and Hispaniola, reportedly killing 1800 people in 1946 and 91
people in 1918. USGS GLORIA sidescan sonar images of the slope north of
Puerto Rico disclose massive slide scars, as much as 75 km across, that we
infer to be initiated by tectonic tilting and earthquake shaking of
formerly horizontal carbonate platform deposits. The slides probably
generated tsunamis. Historic earthquake records, current levels of
microseismicity, and recent GPS results all point to significantly greater
deformation offshore and limited displacement onshore in Puerto Rico and
the Virgin Islands.
The Puerto Rico trench, an active plate boundary north of Puerto Rico , is
located off the major population center of San Juan, and a shallower trench
(Muertos trough) and another active boundary exists along the south side of
the island. Because of the great population density and extensive
construction near the coast a very significant earthquake/tsunami hazard
exists in P.R. Better understanding of plate structure, movement, coupling,
and deformation, is imperative to comprehend the earthquake and tsunami
risks.
Our recent joint C&MGP and EHP workshop
(http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/puertoricoworkshop/), involving scientists,
engineers, managers of government emergency management organizations, the
insurance industry, P.R. telephone company etc. has provided
recommendations regarding needed work offshore:
1. Analysis of relevant data and the formation of a GIS data bank for the
Puerto Rico region, which will facilitate comparison of disparate data
types and focus/prioritize future research efforts (YEAR 1).
2. Acquisition of high-resolution swath (bathymetry and backscatter),
topographic, and seismic reflection data to define fault systems across the
region (CONTRACT, YEAR 2).
3. Acquisition of deep penetration Multichannel Seismic Reflection and
OBS/OBH refraction data to constrain the deep structure and interaction
between the subducting Caribbean and North American plates (YEAR 3).
4. Collection of high-resolution seismic profiles and bathymetry in the
nearshore area to map faults. These will be linked with the work of EHP
geologists onshore where efforts to map active faults and estimate slip
rates will be made (YEARS 1 AND 4).
5. Passive recording of earthquakes by ocean bottom seismometers and
temporary land arrays to better locate earthquakes and to construct a 3-D
velocity and attenuation model for propagation of seismic energy (YEAR 1
and 4).
All the best,
Bill Dillon

Estimado Manuel:
Atentos saludos,

Dear colleagues
I like to re submit the project about Caribbean Plate te=
ctonics. For this purpose I need the following information
1. Which project are you participating about the Caribbean geology, tectoni=
c, stratigraphy, geochemistry, petrology, paleontology, or any other thing w=
hose data will be useful for developing the tectonic interpretation of the C=
aribbean. (WHY: Because they ask for new data about the Caribbean geology i=
n order to enhance Plate tectonic Interpretations)
2. A short paragraph indicating why you believe that a Forum is needed as a=
n IGCP Project to develop a better understanding of the Caribbean Plate tect=
onic
3. What kind of societal benefic would produce a best Plate Tectonic unders=
tanding of the Caribbean area
dear collegues,
I suppose that our italian-latinamerican group will partecipate at the
first meeting IGCP 433 in La Habana the next November 1999, presenting a
note on the "tectono magmatic settlement and geodynamic evolution of the
Caribbean Margins in the Mesozoic early Tertiary". This note is almost the
same of which presented in Kingaton in July 98, and will be the base of the
note for Brazil 2OOO. It represents the present our status of art on the
Caribbean geology.
Hasta Pronto !!

Regards,
Andrew Coleman
