Dear Collegues,

I am trying to do a very specific research on Cuba-Jamaica-Hispaniola Geophysical-Geological reconstruction, I wonder if somebody inside the group could tell me where could I buy this information, i am trying to collect every thing regarding to the Hispaniola, Cuba and Jamaica.
My work has a deadline, and my time is getting over, and i still need some geophysical-geochemical data.

Thanks in advance,

I doubt that any digital databases of the type that you can "data mine" exist for the Caribbean (or for that matter anywhere else). The type and range of information that you need is in the pages of the scholarly journals and is so immense that it has taken the entire careers of many of us to acquire and absorb this information !

A good start is the Geological Society of America Decade of North American Geology Caribbean volume (www.geosociety.com) if it is still available. (It can probably be consulted ,in many college libraries).

Another useful volume is  Donovan and Jackson (eds) "Caribbean Geology: an introduction" available as a a pdf on a CD for US$50 from:

Dept of Geology and Geography(attn. Ian Brown)
University of the West Indies
Mona, Kingston 7, Jamaica  or try phoning 876-927-2728

University of Texas site  www.ig.utexas.edu/CaribPlate/  may also be useful.

Hope this helps

Marcela,
two other books should be available soon: a first is edited by Jochen Bundschuh and Guillermo E. Alvarado, the title is "Central America: Geology, Resources and Hazards" and published by Taylor & Francis. It should be available in a month or so (ISBN: 0415416477). THe second is a GSA Special Paper on the Caribbean  GEology, edited by P.Mann. I've heard that it should be published in feb 07.

January 30, 2007

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We would like to bring to your attention to a theme session proposed for the 2007 AGU Joint Assembly:  Subduction erosion and tectonic underplating along the Central America trench and beyond. This session is anticipated to include subduction erosion and tectonic underplating talks that address present and past crustal structure, petrologic, and tectonic evolution of the Pacific margin of southern Mexico, from the eroded trench to the active magmatic arc. Presentations on modeling results or similar broad research on subduction erosion are very much welcome, and so are examples from other truncated margins elsewhere. Presentations are invited from researchers in a broad range of fields, including but not restricted to: sedimentary geology, petrology, geochronology, geophysics, igneous & metamorphic petrology, and structural geology.

This is theme session T02 for the 2007 AGU Joint Assembly, which will be held in Acapulco, Mexico, 22-25 May 2007.  The session chairs, Mihai Ducea and Victor Valencia, invite you to submit abstracts prior to the March 1, 2007 deadline. Submission information and meeting details can be found at:

http://www.agu.org/meetings/ja07/

Please distribute this notice to anyone who might be interested.  We are particularly interested in promoting research by graduate and undergraduate students, YOUR graduate students that is. It is difficult to reach out to the active community of graduate students (because it is a fast moving target) – so we ask you, the advisors to encourage them to participate, whether you will attend/present or not. Feel free to contact Victor Valencia or myself if you have any questions, if you wish to request invited status, etc. We look forward to seeing you there.

Respectfully,

Victor Valencia and Mihai Ducea

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF PLANET EARTH
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
After UN proclamation, December 2005, the International Year of Planet Earth was registered as a not-for-profit organisation under the law of Delaware (USA) by March 16, 2006. UN Proclamation ignited creation of National Committees in 15 countries (June 2006): Australia, Austria, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan (already in 2005), Malaysia, Mongolia, Namibia, New Zealand, Peru, Sweden, Switzerland and UK. Twenty other nations advanced well in launching such committees, while 15 others are seriously considering doing so. Fund raising activities started and several Partners joined the initiative. In June, two (former) heads of state (Namibia and Tanzania) agreed to become Patrons of the International Year.

All geoscientists in the world are invited to contribute to and participate in this largest ever global event for the geosciences. For more information, please check www.yearofplanetearth.org

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
EPISODES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next issue of Episodes, Vol. 29, No.2, is scheduled for release in July. This issue will include, among other important matters, the following themes:
- The International Year of the Planet Earth:  2007-2009. An updated and much more complete presentation than presented in this Bulletin.
- Guidelines and Criteria for National Geoparks
- Several articles presenting news from the International Commission on Stratigraphy
- The exploding lakes in Vanuatu
- Presentation of the Geological Map of the People’s Republic of China
Please remember to look up the Episode Internet Page (http://www.episodes.org)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY CELEBRATES 200 YEARS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Geological Society of London celebrates its Bicentennial year in 2007.  Planned activities include an International Conference, field trips, monthly public lectures on a wide range of topics and many regional events throughout the UK.  The year will begin with a balloon launch from Burlington House courtyard in January and ends with a dinner at Natural History Museum, on 13th November.

For further information, please go to http://www.geolsoc.org.uk, email bicentenary@... or call +44 20 7434 994

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
STRATEGIC PLANNING
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of the members of the IUGS Executive Committee will attend the 21st African Geological Colloquium in Maputo July 3-5. This gives us an opportunity to discuss matters of importance for IUGS, promote global geosciences, meet and interact with African geoscientists and plan for a stronger future on the continent. On July 1 and 2 we will have a meeting to discuss matters of strategic importance for the future of IUGS. This includes the future research directions, organisation of the IUGS bodies, and the relation between IUGS and its active members.

On July 6 there will be a meeting with the other representatives from other Geounions that are present at the Colloquium.
