Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help out. I am looking for
the abstract volume/preprints for the Fourth Caribbean
Conference that was held in Trinidad in 1965. The
Transactions volume (dated 1968 but actually printed in
1969) is freely available, but I have not been able to
find the abstracts volume which I believe was issued with
preprints.

My main interest is in the papers on Jamaica (Burke et al.
and Coates), but it would be nice to know what else was in
there.

Does anybody know of the whereabouts of a copy?

Thanks

Simon Mitchell

Subject: Frogs vs Paleogeography of the Caribbean

Dear colleagues
A recent paper about the origin of Caribbean frogs according to DNA dates by S. Blair Hedges,  suggests that at least 29 million years ago, South American frogs hopped on some sort of natural rafts and drifted until reaching either Central America or the Caribbean islands, where they gave rise to new frog populations. His analysis of the sequences shows to him that these South American frogs didn’t walk their way to their new homes. Instead, they made the trip to Central America or the Caribbean between 29 and 47 million years ago, after the land bridges broke—which means they had to travel by floating across water on a raft such as a piece of wood from a tree. The researchers' findings are detailed in this week's issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
I would like to underline that DNA dates obtained for frogs between 29 and 47 Ma completely override with the time lapse of GAARLANDIA´s landbridge (33 - 35 Ma), as proposed by Iturralde-Vinent and MacPhee, 1999, Bull. American Museum of Natural History.  Remarkably, Hedges made no reference to this and several other papers discussing the Caribbean paleogeographic scenario.

Hi Manuel!

I have registered today for the Guatemala fieldtrip in December, so I hope
to see you there. I had a long discussion with Antonio last Monday in
Granada which was very inspiring and I am very interested in continuing
our research in Cuba. Next few weeks I'll work on the Cuba paper and I'll
send you the draft by the end of July. Finally, we have found a good PhD
student to work on the tomography and tectonophysics of the Carribean, and
he expects to have good results to presentin Puerto Rico next year in
March I believe, so I'll keep you posted about his progress. He may
contact you in the future to ask about Carribean models.

For now, all the best!

I woul like to inform that since a couple of months I don't receive any message or comunications from the carib-group.
Why ? What happened ?
I hope that yo can help me resolving the problem. For example, I don't know the state of art of the next Caribbean Conference in Dominican Rep., and the progress of the researches.

Guiseppe and others,

I have checked your setting on the Caribbean tectonics groups and everything
appears fine. You should be getting messages including a number about the
conference in the DR.

1) Did you get your own message to the group?

2) past messages to group are at: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/carib/

I suspect the problem may be "spam blocking" settings on your end. (just a
guess since everything else seems ok).

Hi Rob -

I too am very concerned about the progress of the 18th Geological Conference
of the Caribbean. There has been no update to there website and I have sent
both a workshop proposal and a paper presentation abstract to them and have
received no reply whatsoever. No acknowledgement or reception of these
abstracts and proposals. So at this time I do not know where to continue
with their development or not.

In addition, there has been no memos regarding reservations for the hotel,

this and find out exactly where we should be looking. Many thanks in

Hi R.B.

I'm not involved with organization of DR meeting. I just pass along
information and try to keep the Carib list functioning. This listserve is only
associated with the meeting to the extent that the meeting organizers use it.

I assume the DR meeting is on tract based on conversation last week with Paul
Mann who mentioned that he is involved with organizing a field trip for the
meeting.

Subject: RE: [carib] no contacts

Guiseppe and others,

I have checked your setting on the Caribbean tectonics groups and everything
appears fine. You should be getting messages including a number about the
conference in the DR.

1) Did you get your own message to the group?

2) past messages to group are at: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/carib/

I suspect the problem may be "spam blocking" settings on your end. (just a
guess since everything else seems ok).

cheers,

Rob Rogers - Carib group moderator

Dear colleagues,
I woul like to inform that since a couple of months I don't receive any
message or comunications from the carib-group.
Why ? What happened ?
I hope that yo can help me resolving the problem. For example, I don't know
the state of art of the next Caribbean Conference in Dominican Rep., and the
progress of the researches.
Thank you and greetings.

SORRY FOR MULTIPLE POSTINGS

Dear friends,

We are pleased to inform that our session proposal "Caribbean
Subduction Zones - Past and Present" for the upcoming 2007 AGU Fall
Meeting, which will take place right after the IGCP546 field trip to
Guatemala, was approved by the Fall Meeting Program Committee and is
already listed on the AGU Web site:

http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm07/
(follow >> Preplanned Sessions >> Sponsor: Tectonophysics

or go directly to:

http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm07/?content=search&show=detail&sessid=387

We would like to invite you to present contributions from all fields
of geophysics, geochemistry and geology applied to convergent
tectonics and geodynamics of the Caribbean. Field-based, geochemical
or petrologic studies of sutures and subduction mélanges are welcome.
We especially encourage contributions establishing links, contrasts
and correlations among current and fossil subduction zones in the
Caribbean area.

Please, note that the abstract submission deadline is 6 September
2007, 23:59 Universal Time. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT OUR SESSION
WILL BE SCHEDULED AS AN ORAL SESSION, but the higher the number of
abstracts submitted, the greater the possibility.  So, we are asking
you to submit abstracts for our session and promote it among your
colleagues and students.

Best

Uwe Martens and Antonio García-Casco

You may found interesting the following paper recently published

ANTONIO GARCÍA-CASCO.

Magmatic paragonite in trondhjemites from the Sierra del Convento mélange, Cuba  American Mineralogist, Volume 92, pages 1232.1237, 2007

ABSTRACT

In the Sierra del Convento mélange peraluminous trondhjemitic-tonalitic rocks, formed by partial melting of subducted oceanic crust at ca. 15 kbar, 700 °C, contain millimeter-sized crystals of paragonite that appear to be of magmatic origin. These crystals are replaced by plagioclase and quartz along the rims. Chemically relict paragonite cores have high K contents (up to 0.35 apfu), whereas K is low at the rims (down to ca. 0.10 apfu). Calcium is relatively high in the cores and rims (0.06.0.11 apfu). The relict core compositions contrast signiÞ cantly with small matrix paragonite crystals, which formed during subsequent subsolidus retrogression of relictic magmatic plagioclase at high pressure/low temperature (ca. 400 °C, 8 kbar). Textural relations, mineral composition, and calculations of phase relationships in the system NCASH strongly suggest that primary paragonite formed by crystallization of a silicate melt. This appears to be the Þ rst reported occurrence of magmatic paragonite.

Keywords: Magmatic paragonite, trondhjemite, mélange, subduction.
