Renewable Energy Education for a Sustainable Future
Dear friends and colleagues,
Greetings from SEI!
These are exciting times for Renewable Energy and Natural Building and we are very excited to be at the forefront of educating the future community for ecological justice. Our Renewable Energy Education Program is growing tremendously from hands-on workshops to online courses, and we are moving forward with the creation of our 7-acre Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Training Center in Paonia, Colorado.
As friends in the Natural Building World we wanted you to know about our 2009 Sustainable Building Program. We are very excited about the direction of this program from hands-on workshops in Colorado to online courses we are truly diversifying the program's curriculum. This year we are featuring three workshops and an online course designed for owner-builders in the pre-design stage, architects, builders, designers, contractors, and for anyone interested in this vast field of study. These include Building for the Future: Sustainable Home Design, Build it with Bales: Intro to Straw Bale Construction, and Straw Bale Construction & Natural Plasters.
SEI appreciates the help of our friends and colleagues when it comes to spreading the word about our trainings. This February begins our very popular Sustainable Home Design Online Course. Included below is more information about this course and what it offers. Share this information with those you know, or consider signing up yourself!
Thanks for helping us support sustainable building! We wish you a very fruitful year.

Building for the Future: Online Course
Sustainable Home Design
February 23- April 5, 2009
Building for the Future Online will focus on the principles behind designing and building residential structures that achieve optimal year-round comfort, reduce energy consumption, improve indoor air quality, and limit environmental impact. The emphasis is on integrated design using a whole-building approach, applying building science and integrating green design strategies into the built environment. Also covered will be the synergistic relationship between climate-sensitive design and natural building materials. The online sessions include more case studies of successful sustainable homes, the Building with Awareness DVD, the book Your Green Home, industry related hand-outs and a wealth of internet resource links. Students can also earn college credit for all online courses through Madison Area Technical College.
Time Requirements: You can work on the Building for the Future Online course at ANYTIME, but you will generally need between 8-15 hrs/week to complete assignments/quizzes and participate in online discussions. This is an average/estimate and will vary based on user's computer/internet connection and previous experience/understanding of the subject matter.
The Consortium for Education in Renewable Energy Technologies (CERET) offers certificates in Renewable Energy to provide students with the theoretical knowledge necessary to begin a career in energy management and renewable energy technology. Certificates are granted through Madison Area Technical College (MATC). SEI's online courses qualify for college credits through MATC and towards a Renewable Energy Certificate.
