STAND FOR LESS Launch Event
standforlesslogoEverybody stands for something. Now lots of folks are going to be standing for less. What is "Stand for Less?" It's about coming together to use less fuel, less water, less energy, and have more as a result.

On Wednesday, April 8th, San Diego will rally together to Stand For Less and you're invited to join the movement.  Join us from 10:30-12:30 at Martin Luther King, Jr. Promenade Park for this free event.  There will be informational booths and educational workshops hosted by Ed Begley, Jr. designed to help you learn to live a conservation lifestyle.

We can all get more...by standing for less. Find out more at standforless.com.

Green Business Spotlight:
 Sunshine Care

Sunshine Care LogoSunshine Care is a unique alternative for assisted living that specializes in Alzheimer's and dementia care.

They have an on-site greenhouse where fruits and vegetables are grown according to organic standards of practice. The organic produce is then integrated into the house menu plans. The beautifully landscaped grounds features xeriscape planting and the organic plant material from the grounds and gardens, as well as kitchen scraps, are composted.

Awareness of the environmental impact of choices and policies doesn't end in the garden at Sunshine Care. The facility conserves energy in numerous ways: CFLs, sensors and timer controlled lighting; recycling in all parts of the facility; front load, low water usage washing machines and biodegradable detergents; and low impact cleaning products are some of their eco-friendly choices.

Kudos to Sunshine Care for leading the way in the green evolution of assisted living care.

Integrative Community Healthcare
  Healing Arts Festival
The Alternative Healing Network (AHN) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that promotes the use of integrative healing arts and improves access to care in under-served neighborhoods.

They have recently opened Adams Avenue Integrative Health Center where they offer integrative healing arts on a sliding scale where the patient decides how much she can afford for treatment. AHM also produces the San Diego Healing Arts Festival in Balboa Park (May 10 from 10am to 6pm). This event brings healing techniques together with music and dance to create accessible healing environments where people can experience alternative therapies in a fun and safe setting.

What to do if you accidentally break a CFL bulb...
CFL bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and care must be taken if one breaks in your home.

- DO NOT grab a broom or vacuum. You will spread the mercury into the air.
- Turn off central air systems, open windows and leave the area for at least 15 minutes.
- Wear gloves when cleaning up.
- Use cardboard to scoop up broken pieces and powder.
- Use a damp towel or duct tape to clean up remaining fragments.
- Place broken pieces and cleaning materials in a sealed plastic bag or Mason jar with lid and dispose of it at a facility that accepts Household Hazardous Waste.

For more detailed information visit, www.energystar.gov and search "CFL."
