The keynote speaker of the conference is Marco Trombetti of TRANSLATED.
Marco is co-founder and CEO of TRANSLATED and oversees the use of technology
to increase quality and reduce costs. Before founding TRANSLATED, Marco
developed internet solutions for digital mapping companies and web
information retrieval / data-mining tools. He will present the following
paper:  MyMemory, creating the world's largest translation memory.



Description:

Translated will present a fast growing 5 billion word collaborative
translation memory. Presentation will focus on how collaborative models and
open standard can help to create value for customers, LSP and translators.
Technical challenges and barriers to collaboration will be discussed.
Translated will also propose an open standard that will allow CAT producers
to connect with large web-based translation memories will suggest of new
business models for the industry. MyMemory is available for beta testing at
http://mymemory.translated.net



This year, the programme includes two panel discussions: one on
crowdsourcing and one on who owns Translation Memories!

This will be the thirty-first conference in the series. The Aslib event
draws together a diverse group of delegates, who gain new insights and
brainstorm ideas on the use of information technology for translation. In
general, the areas looked at are:

This call for papers invites abstracts of papers to be presented at the
conference. Talks are slanted towards a practitioner's point of view, even
when dealing with the latest product developments and theoretical research.
The papers (and the presentations) should focus on the user aspects of
translation or translation-related software. Presentations accompanied by
demonstrations are especially welcome. A list of possible topics appears

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Authors are required to submit an abstract of a MINIMUM of 500 words of the
paper they would like to present, together with an outline of the structure
of the paper and short biography.

The abstracts will be considered by the Programme Chairs, namely: Alain
Désilets, National Research Council of Canada; Daniel Grasmick, Lucy
Software and Services; Professor Ruslan Mitkov, University of Wolverhampton;
Chris Pyne, SAP; Reinhard Schäler, TILP; and Olaf-Michael Stefanov, Vienna.

The authors of abstracts will be notified of acceptance or rejection of
their submissions by 1 August 2009. Speakers' presentations must be
submitted by 12 November 2009.

In brief, the deadlines are:

* 1 July 2009 - deadline for abstracts

* 1 August 2009 - all authors will be notified of decisions

* 12 November 2009 - speakers’ presentations to be submitted

* 27 November 2009 - presentations posted on the conference web site
in a password protected area

I am delighted to announce that the keynote speaker of the Conference is now

mapping companies and web information retrieval / data-mining tools. His
presentation will be on his system that falls somewhere between traditional
professional LSP and crowdsourcing..  Further details on his paper will
appear on the Aslib Conference web site soon.



The second paper on the 19th November will now be:

Yours or Mine or What? The simple complexity of copyright of translations
Abraham de Wolf, Lucy Software and Services, Germany
The presentation will offer the audience a basic structure with which
copyright issues can be identified and understood. The focus will be on the
use of software for translations and addresses under what conditions who
owns what, and who else might have rights of use aside from ownership
rights. Copyright aspects of the use of free internet translation machines
and collaborative translation platforms will also be looked at. And to round
things up some basic recommendations for how to address copyright issues in
contracts with customers, free lancers and employees will be given.
