FREDERICK COUNTY RESIDENTS: SEND AN EMAIL TO COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ASKING THE INCINERATOR MEETINGS TAKE PLACE IN THE EVENING
It seems the decision to put a garbage burning incinerator in Frederick County has been made in secret, not with the public scrutiny and input such an important decision needs. The better alternative is waste reduction and recycling. This is proven technology and is being done in many areas around the country. Incineration is being pushed by special interests who stand to make huge profits from it. At the very least, the meetings should be held at times that working people can attend. Please write an email, or call, the commissioners. See sample email below.
Dear Commissioners Gardner, Thompson, Gray, Hagen, and Jenkins:
I am writing to request that the upcoming meeting on waste management options in Frederick County be postponed from the October 22 morning meeting and held in the evening at a later date. The push to put an incinerator in this county has not been done with the public scrutiny or input that this critical decision needs. This leaves a bad impression, particularly as this Board was elected in good part by a public wanting more openness and less influence from special interests.
We have also not seen any comparisons on costs, benefits and health and environmental impacts comparing incineration side by side with comprehensive waste reduction and recycling. As this process moves forward, please make every attempt to proceed with full openness and with public input. Also, all past and future contacts between representatives of the incinerator industry, or there paid consultants, and County staff need to be fully disclosed.
