Saturday November 10 - Hike Maryland Heights
across from Harpers Ferry WV, followed by optional dinner in Harpers Ferry. Moderately difficult. This is a fairly challenging loop hike of about 6 miles with a 1,300 foot elevation change. There are some outstanding views of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and of Harpers Ferry, as well as some old fortifications to explore. We'll meet at 1 p.m. at the trailhead. Trailhead is just across Sandy Hook Rd. from the foot bridge across the C&O Canal. We'll dine at The Secret Six Tavern in Harpers Ferry afterward.

What is Trash Hauling Franchising and Why Should We Care??
Because it will improve Frederick Counties ability to increase recycling. Please read below and contact your representatives if you live in Frederick County.
The Board of County Commissioners is planning to request authority from the County's State delegation to
to establish trash hauling franchising districts. This authority would allow the County to create trash hauling districts and to accept bids from haulers interested in providing service within a district. By having only one company cover any particular area, franchising will reduce the truck traffic on County roads. More importantly, franchising will enable recycling efforts and trash collection to be tied into one operation. In turn, this will enable curb side recycling to be extended throughout the County since franchised haulers could be required to pick up recycled materials as well as trash as part of their contract. Last year, the County's efforts to obtain authority to create hauling franchises failed because the County's state lawmakers said they had heard too many complaints and questions from constituents as well as small trash haulers who felt threatened.
The commissioners said many of the problems were created by misunderstandings which they hope to clear up before decisions are made by the
delegation this year. They need the public to contact the delegates to let them know that we support solid waste franchising because it is a key to facilitating recycling efforts throughout the County. Please write, email or phone your delegates and ask them to authorize solid waste hauling franchises in Frederick County
