Looking at "mainframe DASD" on a PC   Message List

Hi Folks,

I'd just like to announce a new way to deploy Jan Jaeger's ZZSA
program from a Hercules configuration so you can use it to look at all
the MVS disks in the configuration, on a PC, without having an MVS or a z/OS
system. Since ZZSA is not from IBM and it has been posted to the CBT Tape
collection, it is perfectly legal for anyone to use it. So if you are in
possession of MVS-format data disks, but you do not have an MVS system to look
at them, you can use ZZSA to look at all the data on
them, using only your PC, and you can do this perfectly legally (as far
as I can tell).

ZZSA is a standalone program that can be IPLed from the boot area of an MVS
disk. So I prepared a one-cylinder MVS mini-disk which contains nothing on it,
except for a one-track empty VTOC, and ZZSA loaded into its boot area. You can
put the ZZSA disk into a Hercules configuration, or you can attach it (a
Hercules command) to a Hercules configuration. Then you have to IPL it, and it
will show you all the (other) disks in the configuration, besides itself.

You can get this mini-disk by going to File 538 on the updates page
of www.cbttape.org. A zip of the minidisk is member ZZSADISK of the
pds, and instructions how to use it, are in the @FILE538 member.

Download the ZZSADISK member in BINARY to a PC, unzip it, and the
disk is ready to use. Its volser is ZZSA01. If you don't have an MVS
system to start with, you can get the zzsa01.zip file from the "files"
section posted for this group. Just download the zzsa01.zip file to
your PC, unzip it, and it's ready to use. If you are running Hercules
on your PC, you can deploy the zzsa01 disk immediately, to look at all
your other disks. You don't need any version of MVS or z/OS. ZZSA is a
standalone program. Further instructions have been posted in the files section
for this group, under the name @FILE538.txt.

Best of everything to all of you.........

Sam
