Tom,
The McDonalds in Boiling Springs opened up this past weekend across the street from Hardees.  The dining room has a GWU theme.  When you walk into the front entrance you are immediately standing in front of a 6 ft x 6 ft picture taken inside of the Williams Observatory sometime in the early 1990s.  In the picture there is a student on the ladder adjusting the Dec. locks on the C14 telescope.  Standing next to the ladder is a beaded Prof English holding up a Televue 2” eyepiece.  Tom, your famous now!!!

I am writing to announce the Fall 2008 North Carolina Astronomers' Meeting at Guilford Tech on Saturday, 18 October.  
(This is an update from what some of you may have heard during the spring - we had to shift the date to the 18th due to the fact that our featured speaker is being inducted into the AAAS on our original proposed date.)
 
About the Conference:
The meeting will run ~9-5 Saturday, 18 October. (Specific times will depend on how many presentations are scheduled.)  The location is the same as for 2007 - the Koury Hospitality Careers Center at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, NC.  The meeting web page is at http://www.gtcc.edu/services/observatory/speakerSeriesNCAM/astronomersMeeting.html.  
 
We will use the same model as in the past - short (~10 minute) oral presentations and a separate room for posters.  Presentation by students is encouraged.  An online registration form will be posted at the web site soon.  

Neil Gehrels (NASA/GSFC), Principal Investigator for the Swift Mission, will be our featured speaker this year.  In addition to his Saturday morning Swift/GRB presentation, Dr. Gehrels will give a public lecture Friday, 17 October, also in Koury, at 7:30 p.m.

GTCC is in Jamestown NC, just to the southeast of Greensboro, and  readily accessible from Interstates 85 and 40.  Maps/directions are available at the conference web site.
If you plan to travel a long distance to the meeting and will need a hotel room, please be aware that the High Point Furniture Market starts the week after our meeting, so it will be increasingly difficult to find inexpensive rooms as the event approaches.  There are plenty of hotels around the area - here's a link to a form for finding accommodations near
