The camera is a Philips ToUcam webcam with added IR filter. Generally
I take 1000 to 1500 frames and then employ Registax 2 for selecting
and stacking the frames. Registax includes image processing routines
that are both powerful and flexible and I try to not overdo the
processing (wanting a fairly natural look). The image of 3 Sept was a
stack of about 30% of 1350 frames, finished with PhotoShop 7 plus
GrainSurgery.
After a late start I've been working at getting a full range of
planetary longitudes, but seeing hasn't been marvellous and the
images have been less than satisfactory. You can see these on my
website at www.users.bigpond.com/serena.steuart/index.html, which has
been designed for the casually interested rather than for astronomers
(so it's lacking the sort of detail you have asked about).
I've decided that the ToUcam works best if its allowed to set its own
white level and forget about the question of "true" colour. You can
see from my attempts that getting "correct" colour isn't all that
easy. If we regard colour as an aid in descriminating detail, then
true colour isn't important.
You will see that results with the ToUcam are much improved over my
2001 images obtained with a Starlight Xpress MX516 camera. Simply a
matter of obtaining a lot more frames in a much shorter time (and not
overdoing the image enhancement). Also, for this purpose, the colour
chip is nice.
