Re: [ce-gnu-lug] OT: Hard Drive Recovery

same thing works for RAM. way back in college, I have quite a number of old non-working RAMs from friends. I placed them in a plastic bag then wrapped it with packaging tape. After 2 weeks on the freezer, some are working just fine and some are not. Transistors are back to normal after being bloated due to overheat.

If you are familiar with how materials behave "in temperature", you'd be amazed. Though its not a fool-proof solution, and I tried it _only once_ and out of desperation. Metals expand when subjected to heat. Old hard drives tend to heat up as they spin faster. The reason why hard drives have vacuumed chambers is to lessen particles that may cause friction. Friction = heat. Gets? When subjected to sudden extreme cold, the metal contracts, albeit for a short period. But then as I've said, the procedure could be one time only.

Also there's this Seagate behaviour in old hard drives (really old), that the faulty ones dont read properly when mounted "correctly" (circuit board at bottom). Sometimes you have to make it stand upright and it will read :-) .

Can anyone here recommend someone who can recover data from a dead hard drive (can't be detected anymore) here in Cebu? It's a Seagate Barracuda 80GB 7200RPM....
