The Caribbean and Central American Realms of the Southernmost Cordillera
This session explores the tectonic evolution of the Caribbean plate
and its interactions with the southernmost Cordillera of North America
since the Jurassic opening of the Americas. Terranes such as the
Greater Antilles were displaced eastward from the Cordillera and
replaced by the Chortis and Chorotega blocks. The evolution of the
Middle America subduction system formed the modern Central American
Cordillera where controls on late Cenozoic tectonism are related to the
variable character of Cocos plate subduction along the Pacific margin
and complex strike-slip deformation along the Caribbean - North America
margin. Presentations are welcome from all regions of the Caribbean and
Central America, especially those focusing on the evolution of the
southern Cordillera.
Abstract submission deadline is
December 16, 2002. Note that all abstracts must be submitted
electronically through the GSA website (www.geosociety.org).
