POSDOCTORAL POSITION ON THE STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY OF PANAMA
The Salvage Panama Canal Geology and Paleontology Project at the
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (www.stri.org) was formed to
take advantage of the unique opportunities offered by the five-year
expansion of the Panama Canal. The expansion of the Canal will expose
large amounts of fresh rock outcrops from the Panamanian Neogene.
Examination of these fresh rock outcrops will enable us to study the
geological record spanning the time before, during, and after the
formation of the Isthmus of Panama, with all its evolutionary,
paleoclimatological, and tectonic implications.
The Center for Tropical Paleoecology and Archaeology at the Smithsonian
Tropical Research Institute is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position
in the project related to the structural geology of the Panama Canal. A
recent Ph.D. in Geology is required, as well a demonstrated track record
of recent publications in the area of tectonics or structural geology.
Candidate must be fluent in English and/or Spanish. The position
requires residency in Panama, and candidates must be willing to carry
out extensive fieldwork in the Panama Canal. This is a one-year
position renewable for a second year depending on progress and
availability of funding.
Stipend is $35,000-40,000/year depending on qualifications. There are
additional funds for travel and fieldwork. Deadline: November 1/2007.
Prospective candidates should send a letter of interest and curriculum
vitae to: Carlos Jaramillo (JaramilloC@...).
