GPS and modeling study of deformation in northern Central America. Geophysical
Journal International
We use GPS
measurements at 37 stations in Honduras and El Salvador to describe active
deformation of the western end of the Caribbean Plate between the Motagua fault
and Central American volcanic arc. All GPS sites located in eastern Honduras
move with the Caribbean Plate, in accord with geologic evidence for an absence
of neotectonic deformation in this region. Relative to the Caribbean Plate, the
other stations in the study area move west to west–northwest at rates that
increase gradually from 3.3 ± 0.6 mm yr−1 in central Honduras to 4.1
± 0.6 mm yr−1 in western Honduras to as high as 11–12 mm yr−1
in southern Guatemala. The site motions are consistent with slow westward
extension that has been inferred by previous authors from the north-striking
grabens and earthquake focal mechanisms in this region. We examine the factors
that influence the regional deformation by comparing the new GPS velocity field
to velocity fields predicted by finite element models (FEMs) that incorporate
the regional plate boundary faults and known plate motions. Our modeling
suggests that the obliquely convergent (∼20°) direction of Caribbean–North
American Plate motion relative to the Motagua fault west of 90°W impedes the
ENE-directed motion of the Caribbean Plate in southern Guatemala, giving rise
to extension in southern Guatemala and western Honduras. The FEM predictions
agree even better with the measured velocities if the plate motion west of the
Central American volcanic arc is forced to occur over a broad zone rather than
along a single through going plate boundary fault. Our analysis confirms key
predictions of a previous numerical model for deformation in this region, and
also indicates that the curvature of the Motagua fault causes significant
along-strike changes in the orientations of the principal strain-rate axes in
the fault borderlands, in accord with earthquake focal mechanisms and
conclusions reached in a recent synthesis of the structural and morphologic
data from Honduras. Poor fits of our preferred models to the velocities of GPS
sites near the Gulf of Fonseca may be an artifact of the still-short GPS time-series
in this region or the simplifying assumptions of our FEMs

Definite risk. Quake happened on Swan Island transform
(south side of 6 km deep Cayman Trough). Undersea landslide could have occurred
(Tsunami watch (NOT WARING) was issued as conditions favorable
(magnitude and water depth) for tsunami was present. Luckily it did
not. See USGS site for details. Landslides and tsunami can
also be triggered by aftershocks.
There is no local warning system. No paleotsunami studies
along the north coast of Honduras.
Aftershocks are real and likely to happen for next few
weeks. Heightened awareness should observed in coastal zones…….
If a sudden low tide happens, it’s time to find high ground.

Subject: Caribbean Session at Houston GSA Annual Meeting
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS 2008 ANNUAL GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA MEETING
5-9 October o Houston, Texas
Dear Caribbean Region Colleagues,
We are organizing a Topical Session on Caribbean Tectonics for the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America, which we think will be of interest to you. Please take a look at the description below, and plan to submit an abstract for this session. We are attempting to contact all current researchers on Caribbean Tectonics, but our list is no doubt not complete. If you know of others who should be contacted, please send this message on to them. The meeting will take place October 5-9, in Houston, Texas, and the abstract submittal deadline is June 3, 2008. See below for more details.
Topical Session Number 65 LATE JURASSIC TO RECENT GEODYNAMIC EVOLUTION OF THE CARIBBEAN REGION Conveners: Sandra J. Wyld, swyld@..., James E. Wright, jwright@... Sponsorship: GSA Geophysics Division, Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies Scientific Categories: Tectonics, Geophysics/Tectonophysics/Seismology, Stratigraphy
The geodynamic evolution of the Caribbean region, from its origins in the break-up of Pangea to its complex current tectonics, continues to be a topic of widespread and active research, multidisciplinary interest, and ongoing controversy. Houston's location so close to the Caribbean and its easy access for international flights makes it an ideal venue for bringing together the diverse and highly international group of earth scientists working on this region. The focus will be current research on such topics as: origin of the Caribbean Large Igneous Province (CLIP) and associated marine basins; evolution of Cretaceous and Cenozoic magmatic arc systems; tectonic reconstructions of the region and its rapidly evolving plate boundaries; tectonic driving forces and geodynamic modelling; terrane translation, strike-slip faulting and collisional orogenesis; and active plate motions, seismology and neotectonic processes. The conveners are part of the BOLIVAR Southeast Caribbean Continental Dynamics Project_(lead institution Rice University, in Houston), that is investigating accretion of the Leeward Antilles to the South American plate margin through on-land geologic studies, land and marine seismology and geodynamic modelling.
We solicit presentations on all aspects of the geodynamic and tectonic evolution of the Caribbean plate, its fringing arc systems, and adjacent continental provinces. Both oral and poster sessions are planned. Note that speakers may present two volunteered abstracts during the Annual Meeting, as long as one of these abstracts is a poster presentation. (This limitation does not apply to, nor does it include, invited contributions to keynote symposia or GSA topical sessions.) All talks are 15 minutes slots. Poster sessions will be scheduled for the entire day, with authors to be present from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a reception.
Note that all abstracts must be submitted electronically through the GSA website, and are due by midnight (Eastern time, USA), June 3. The electronic submission form is currently available at http://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2008AM/index.epl . Please make sure to submit your abstract to Topical Session Number 65, and to specify your preference for Oral or Poster (or Either). More information on the meeting can be found on the following website: https://www.acsmeetings.org/2008/
We look forward to seeing you there!

Rob's reply is correct. The Aptian-Albian age can be callibrated to ab out 124 to 97 million years ago when the lmestone was deposited upon a shallow shelf like the Bahamas today. The uplift was much younger and related to different processes. So cave formation is quite young. Please contact me if I can help in the future.

"Asociación Congresos Geológicos Sigüenza"
Following an enjoyable and constructive conference in Sigüenza in 2006, we are very pleased to announce that we will organize a new discussion about the Caribbean theme in 2009.
We decided to repeat its successful formula with further conferences. To facilitate this we have formed the "Asociación Congresos Geológicos Sigüenza" in Spain. We would like to establish a Sigüenza Series of conferences.
If people have a theme they wish to explore in an exceptional environment that fosters contact and discussion, we will provide our organizational experience and contacts in the Sigüenza Parador, Universities of Alcala and Madrid, the town council and the Asociación de Geólogos y Geofísicos Españoles del Petróleo, all of whom are generously hospitable.
To all of you who attended the 2006 conference, thank you for your contribution. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2009. By then the proceedings of the 2006 conference will be available as a special publication of the Geological Society of London, edited by Keith James, Maria Antonieta Lorente and James Pindell.
Meanwhile we wish you a peaceful, healthy and constructive 2008

We would like to call your attention on this opportunity to display the importance of non seismic (from grav & mag to MT, CSEM, passive seismic and exploration geophysics methods to solid earth geophysics) applied to oil exploration and subsurface analysis. Please consider sending your contribution to this conference and planning to attend this promising event next year.
More information can be found at http://www.oilandgascartagena2008.com/en/index.html . The deadline for abstract submission (250 words or less) is today, October 23. However, the chairmen have internally agreed to accept abstracts for review up to next November 2nd.
We know for sure that you have more than one interesting case history or application that would be of interest to the specialized audience. As a final word, please consider taking some minutes to put together your abstract and sending it for consideration to the official site. Attached please find the official submission form for your information.
Many thanks for your kind reception to this invitation. We look forward to see you by the beach at Cartagena.
Hasta pronto,

POSDOCTORAL POSITION ON THE STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY OF PANAMA
The Salvage Panama Canal Geology and Paleontology Project at the
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (www.stri.org) was formed to
take advantage of the unique opportunities offered by the five-year
expansion of the Panama Canal. The expansion of the Canal will expose
large amounts of fresh rock outcrops from the Panamanian Neogene.
Examination of these fresh rock outcrops will enable us to study the
geological record spanning the time before, during, and after the
formation of the Isthmus of Panama, with all its evolutionary,
paleoclimatological, and tectonic implications.
The Center for Tropical Paleoecology and Archaeology at the Smithsonian
Tropical Research Institute is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position
in the project related to the structural geology of the Panama Canal. A
recent Ph.D. in Geology is required, as well a demonstrated track record
of recent publications in the area of tectonics or structural geology.
Candidate must be fluent in English and/or Spanish. The position
requires residency in Panama, and candidates must be willing to carry
out extensive fieldwork in the Panama Canal. This is a one-year
position renewable for a second year depending on progress and
availability of funding.
Stipend is $35,000-40,000/year depending on qualifications. There are
additional funds for travel and fieldwork. Deadline: November 1/2007.
Prospective candidates should send a letter of interest and curriculum
vitae to: Carlos Jaramillo (JaramilloC@...).

ECONOMY
The Dominican Republic is a middle-income developing country primarily dependent on agriculture, trade, and services, especially tourism. Although the service sector has recently overtaken agriculture as the leading employer of Dominicans (due principally to growth in tourism, energy, telecommunications, and Free Trade Zones), agriculture remains the most important sector in terms of domestic consumption. Tourism accounts for nearly $1.5 billion in annual earnings. Free Trade Zone earnings and tourism are the fastest-growing export sectors. Remittances from Dominicans living in the United States are estimated to total more than $1.5 billion per year.
HISTORY The island of Hispaniola, of which the Dominican Republic forms the eastern two-thirds and Haiti the remainder, was originally occupied by Tainos, an Arawak-speaking people. The Tainos welcomed Columbus in his first voyage in 1492, but subsequent colonizers were brutal, reducing the Taino population from about 1 million to about 500 in 50 years. To ensure adequate labor for plantations, the Spanish brought African slaves to the island beginning in 1503.
