... If a weight is removed and replaced at the same time you the left stack then you would be right. The spacing of the cogs teeth, size of cog wheels, etc,

How does that matter in this case? Obviously I was mentioning the effects of gravity on a macroscopic scale (this case). The mechanics are very well

Actually it would "work" worse since the direction of gravity wouldn't match the direction of movement + increased friction...
