HELP! I am house/petsitting for a friend. He has a flock of sheep,
they are a certain breed and registered yada yada but I dont know the
specifics. Anyhow he has already had 20+ lambs born this lambing
season and many are multiple births (twins and 2 sets of triplets).
This evening one of the ewes had twins...the first is TINY compared to
its sibling - I would say a third to a quarter the size of the other.
I even think mom maybe having yet another but of these 2 the larger,
2nd born is allowed to nurse but everytime the little runt tries she
nudges it away. She cleaned it up and all upon its arrival. The baby
and mom "call" back and forth to each other but she will not let it
nurse even though the other one is. I have searched high and low and
cannot find any colestrum or milk replacer. It is starting to rain and
I know if this baby gets wet and chilled it is a gonner. It is cold
enough out there (we are in eastern TN) that you can see your breath
but not freezing. I am about to go to the store and buy canned goats
milk - will that help? Is that better than nothing? I cannot bear the
thought of leaving this tiny thing (maybe 2 lbs) out there to fend for
itself (I dont even know if it is a boy or a girl). I am a dog person
and have raised MANY bottle fed puppies (we used to raise show dogs
when I was a kid).
