test failures and have a workaround.

cheetah version 0.9.15
mac os x 10.3.5
python version 2.3
no changes to install

thanks in advance.

here's a sample of error output (there's too many
failures to include all)-

I've got a bit of template code that looks like this:

#for $volume in $output.volumes.value

...
randomly inserted references to

$volume.selection_name.value
$volume.selection_id.value

#end for

The problem I'm seeing is that none of the templates can ever seem to find
the 'selection_name' or 'selection_id' things to apply the '.value' to...

is the placeholder syntax incapable of supporting this type of reference?

none of the objects are dictionaries (they use them, but they are class
objects). I've written a series of classes that represent a tree of data,
and at any node there are a few known attributes that will carry some
data. These are value, key, error and has_error. I store them in a
private dictionary by overriding __getattribute__ and __setattr__. These
classes work perfectly in non template code, and the error message I get
looks like this:

File
"/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/stuff/ui/web/Templates/file_classes.py",
line 125, in respond
     write(filter(VFN(fc,"fileclass_id.value",1),
rawExpr='$fc.fileclass_id.value')) # from line 31, col 67.
NotFound: fileclass_id

anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm going to be deeply sad if
cheetah simply can't support my classes in the template...

thanks
jeremy

If all else fails, you can always fall back to avoiding the name
mapper syntax in cases like these:

$str(volume.selection_id.value)

It also helps to look at what's going on in the compiled template when
you decide to do this. Please forgive me if I have misunderstood the
problem.

well, I'm using __getattribute__ to set things into a dictionary thats
hidden in the class. And in the interpreter using getattr(obj,name) works
just fine.

I tried doing:

${volume}.selection_id.value

and cheetah rendered that as <object reference info>.selection_id.value

so its doing the right thing one level deep. But when try this:

${volume.selection_id}.value

I get my original error again. Is Cheetah unable to chain those getattr()
calls?

So I got all proactive and moved the NameMapper.py module into my workarea
and ran a whole bunch of tests to recreate the situation outside
webware/cheetah and that VFN call works perfectly in my interpretter. I
explored the code a bit to see how it fetches the values and such and I
realized that if it couldn't find it by the hasattr/getattr methods it
would try via a getitem if the class has implemented that. So I added
__getitem__ to each of my classes that are in that chain and I now get one
step further down the chain.

$volume.selection_id.value

before it was complaining about selection_id, but now its complaining
about value. I guess I'll keep at it and hope for the best. I'd really
hate to have to rethink this whole thing at this late date...

I appreciate the replies I've gotten: its been helpful in pointing me in
the right directions. Only been doing Python for a little over a month,
so I'm a bit of a fish out of water still =)

well, I figured it out. It was an error in my classes. I was actually
doing the right thing in my template. I *think* what was happening was
that this:

class DataValueList(...):
     def __init__(self, value=[]):
         self.value = value

ensured that every instance of this class I created shared the same array
in the init when I called it with the empty constructor. When I
explicitly pass in an empty array or simply take the param away from the
signature and simply set value to [] in the body of that method, the
problem went away.

sorry for the misdirection. I should know by now that when I find a
problem like that at the end of a long day, I'm not going to fix it by
staying up later and staring at it.

again, thanks for the helpful replies!

Ah, yes, the static initialization problem. At my company, that
behavior is actually an interview question ;) It "feels" like a bug,
but it's a "feature" that's been in Python so long it's too late to
take it out. The idiom I normally follow is:

def __init__(self, value=None):
     if value is None:
         value = []
     ...

You said that you are new to Python. You can now feel relieved that
you have encountered one of its most severe gotchas.

Good Luck,
-jj

Is it possible to make a cheetah page send unbuffered output?

I have a webpage which displays the results of a large number of
database transactions. I'd like them to be displayed as they are processed.

Any pointers welcome
Rachel

Bonjour,

I fail to compile SiteTemplate.tmpl in example, because of error in line 131
:
             " invalid end directive"

012    #settings Python
...
...
131    #end settings

I hadn't altered thi code.
I didn't locate a similar codeline elsewhere in the package, with this word
'setting' after '#'

What is wrong ?

Thanks on forward

I got this from Mike Orr in regards to the same issue.

#settings was removed from Cheetah. The example is out of date.
If you want to use it, remove #settings / #end settings, and change
the variable definitions in between to #attr.

Added to the TODO.

Hi
  I'd like to have such a construction:

#if $printit == 0
  #extends templates.GreenLayout
#else
  #extends templates.PrintLayout
#end if

I meen, when I pass the "printit=1" argument to Cheetah, I'd like to use the
PrintLayout as the base class, otherwise - GreenLayout.
Is it possible, or do I miss something?

If you look at the generated source, you will know why this is so
impossible. You'll have to find another way to do what you are doing.
  For instance, consider using the delegate design pattern. I can
think of a few other ways to restructure your code. Send another note
if the delegate design pattern doesn't work for you.

Best Regards,

I have implemented varyBy parameter for #cache block. Look at
http://trac.cherrypy.org/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/wiki/Cheetah
If it is bugs free I think it should be added to main code.

Maybe Cheetah should move from CVS to SVN and from old Wiki do more
powerfull Track? http://projects.edgewall.com/trac/.

BTW, Cheetah Wiki does not work. :(

I've tried passing both 'Echo' and 'BigEcho' and passing them as actual
classes, and none of it seems to work: the errorCatcher just doesn't
actually catch any errors. Am I doing something obviously wrong?

It would seem that it is indeed not working. It's getting as far as the
template (since $errorCatcher returns it OK) but it's not actually being
*used*. Before I try and understand the internal complexities of
Cheetah, does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is broken? :)

OK, a patch that seems to fix the problem is below. What I don't know is
whether it fixes the problem in the right way. All it does is call the
Compiler object's turnErrorCatcherOn() method if an errorCatcher was
passed to Template's __init__(). I've had to move the bit that checks
for an errorCatcher to before the bit where a Template gets compile()d,
but that should be OK. I think. If this is going about it in all the
wrong way, do please let me know what I did wrong; I am glumly convinced
that Cheetah is really complex internally :-)
