One point of confusion is sort of built into technical English usage. We use
the word programming to mean (at least) two different things:

(1) writing source code for computer programs and

(2) downloading compiled, executable versions of those programs into
programmable chips.

So first we program and then we program.

(1) is usually a lot more work than (2). Only (2) is required to transform an
at90usbkey board into the electronics of a Chordite keyboard+mouse since I
already did (1)
