Hi Sue,

Have you tried rebooting, or shutting down entirely and restarting?
Sometimes uploading new systems addles the brains!

Best,
Naomi

I have just installed Snow Leopard on my iMac using OS X. All seems
well so far, except that when using Cindex with two indexes open I
can no longer move between the record windows.

When I have two indexes open side by side with a record window open
in each, I used to be able to use the keyboard shortcut 'Command ~
(tilde)' to move from one record window to the other. Now the
shortcut just gets me from one main window to the other. This means
that I have to reach for the mouse each time, which is annoying.

Can anyone help, please?

Sue

Absolutely! There are Mac versions of word processing programs that will
open Word files, but if I were doing embedded indexing in Word I'd certainly
purchase the latest version of Office/Word for Mac. It works exactly like
Word for Windows. (I have both.)

When I switched to Mac I put Parallels and Windows on it so I could
continue using Sky. I did not like Parallels as I found it did slow
things down. Mostly I did not like it because their support is not
good. Sometimes I had problems moving files from one OS to another or
printing and, as I said, their support was not good. It's also an
expense because as they upgrade you have to upgrade your windows. I
finally bailed and got Cindex for Mac. It was a big switch but I'm
done with Windows.

I can't compare Cindex for PC and Cindex for Mac, obviously.

Good luck,
Bonnie

I have a number of pc's and one Mac Mini. I felt I did not need the
big Mac (pun intended) as I already had a big screen monitor (26"). I
bought the Cindex for Mac as I did not parallel the mini. But for
those who believe that the mac is perfect - let me assure it is not.
It still freezes - however not nearly as often as my Vista laptop
crashed. Maybe it is because it is a mini or 'cause I only have 2 gig
of ram instead of 4, but I still have problems with freeze. Come
January I will be updating everything I have never used macros with
anything I ever did except in Word Perfect 5.0 so I don't miss having
them. But when I start indexing a journal that has been published
since 1944. I bet they would come in handy.

Because I was broke - I decided not to buy Office for Mac. Getting
used to OpenOffice and Iwork is not as easy as I had hoped. I guess
my MS Office is too ingrained in my brain, so allow plenty of time for
learning the differences, if you do not purchase Office for Mac. (Or
do not do as I did and not pay attention to the beginning tutorials LOL)

When I did my index in Cindex for Mac, I used PDF's and was able to
have both open next to each other on the wide screen monitor - no
paper needed. I could also make the fonts big enough that I could
read both sides of the screen easily. Plus the PDF let me highlight
words/names plus write notes on the document. That was so great!

All the best with whatever you decide to purchase. The ONLY thing I
can truly recommend is the big screen monitor

Frances told me she runs Cindex on her Mac with Parallels for demonstration
purposes and it works fine. But as I understand it you still need to load
Windows onto your Mac--and will still have to update it, etc.

Switching to a new Cindex version makes me a little nervous too--but I think the
tradeoffs will be more than worth it when the time comes.

Good luck--Laurie

I'm in same situation right now and will be interested in reading the
responses. My husband just made the switch to an iMac because he was
tired of his old computer crashing and I'm thinking of following. He
has been using a program called CrossOver Mac ( $40 and free trial).
So far, he has had no trouble running his old Windows programs using
it. I'm going to try windows Cindex on it to see how well it runs. I'm
thinking it might at least be a good transition.

I haven't used the Windows version, but -- no macros on the Mac. A
long-standing sore point even though I fully support the work Fran and
Peter do, and they do a great job on both platforms.

I would not vote for Sarah Palin if you held a gun to my head. I also
would not call the very funny Slate parody an index.

The ASI has (unfortunately & unprofessionally to many indexers) given
Sarah and her publisher their first Golden Turkey award. Supposed to
publicze the need for indexes. So for has gotten lots of play on
Index-L. A supporter posted on the Daily Kos. Otherwise the shocking
headline news that indexers feel dissed when a best-seller doesn't have
an index has been stiffed in the media.

Tiny Fey's spot-on imitation of Palin has scooped the ASI's statement
about its award.

As a former publicist, I think ASI will only get negative publicity from
this unprofessional move.

This happened to me with Cindex for Windows.
My user dictionary is "full" and Cindex crashes whenever I try to add a

In Windows, the solution was to delete it.
1) Is this the solution in Mac?

Hello all,
I'm using section numbers with periods in them as locators. When I try to "Find"
a span of them I only get the entries with that exact page span and not all the
other entries with any of the locators in between.

Page span example:
3.2.-3.2.5.

So I get the two entries with that span as a locator, but the entries with
3.2.3, 3.2.4 etc. don't show up in the Find grouping.

I've tried it with All and Page in the FIELD box.
I've tried Evaluate References and Pattern as well.

Is there some other setting I can use to make this work?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Mary

Naomi, there is a lot of other formatting that has been used also regarding the
volume designators, bolding of designators, suppressing some of the bolding,
etc. plus Frances sent me a few patterns to use to help with some Search and
Replace issues. Still, I am also surprised that this easy fix worked but I'm
sitting here staring at the nearly done index and all is well!

Is there another step?

I get this:

testing, 1:55; 1:60; 2:75; 2:7778; 3:45; 3:5556

And not this:

testing, 1:55, 1:60; 2:75, 2:7778; 3:45, 3:5556

It looks like you have your page references the way you want them within
volumes, so you just have to change the separator between volumes.

From the top menu, choose Document > Reference Syntax
In the Reference Syntax dialog box, type a semi-colon into the Separator box

Hope this helps!

If someone really knows how to convert a final comma at the end of

a string of locators for one volume to a semi-colon before the volume number
changes please get back to me asap, I would greatly appreciate it. This is worth
a $25 amazon.com gift certificate to me!

Here is what I need to happen.

From this:

abolition

...of nuclear weapons, 1:67, 233-234, 598, 2:46, 299, 3:52

to this:

abolition

...of nuclear weapons, 1:67, 233-234, 598; 2:46, 299; 3:52

Thank you. This index is due on Friday and I need to get this handled.

Thank you!
