So sorry for the delay. I've fixed the problem. It was a missing comma
in the code. I registered the conference for you and switched it over
to your name so that you can edit it.

Thank you for fixing the Hitchhikr log in for me for the Time4Innovation conference but now I want to edit it and I don't know what my log in details are.
Could you possibly email me on the quiet and let me know what my log in is. My email address is....
allanahk@...
but I don't know what my password is. I tried to enter my Blogmeister password for my class but that didn't work.
Allanah King
Thanks David

Hello David, how are you?? I am going to give a training course about ICT
for the English class, and I am going to use your blog as a basis from which
incorporate other tools as slideshare, podcasts, treasure hunts, etc... As
you can see, I really like your blog and use it a lot. But before doing the
course I have two questions for you..
1. Can I give the same school code you gave me to the teachers attending the
course? (ismohe) There may be about 20 students.
2. You know I like the blog and all its tools, like the approval tool, etc.
But there is still one thing I don't like. Some other times I mentioned it
to you. I imagine it is something very difficult to do, but seeing what you
are able to do... I am talking about the editing tool. All other blogs have
editing facilities which makes writing more enjoyable. When teachers or
students write they can easily change the colour or the size of the text,
add smileys, add likns, images, tables, etc. Why is this not possible with
blogmeister?? Most of the students don't know anything about html and it is
difficult for them to use it in their articles. As a result, articles look
.. let's say... boring. I know that this is not the most important, as
contents is the most important.... but... I am sure it would make
blogmesiter the "best" platform for blogging!!
It's just a suggestion which would facilitate my job very much

Great to hear from you, Dolors. I hope it hasn't gotten too hot there
yet. In answer to the first question, it is up to you. You can give
them your school passcode, or give them the following instructions and
have them generate their own:
You can register your school for Blogmeister by going to:
Complete the form that appears, and Class Blogmeister will generate a
unique code for your school, which your teachers can use to register.
Also, urge them to joing the Yahoo Groups mailing list for Class
Blogmeister teachers. Questions can be posed there for answers from
experienced users. You can subscribe to this group by sending an empty
e-mail message to:
As for question 2, well I'm simply not that good a programmer. I'll
take a look to see if there is some sort of plug in that would do the
trick, but it would likely be a Java thing, and that always gets you
into trouble because it behaves differently with IE and Firefox, and
Safari, etc.

You're going to love this -- and if you live north of the equator, your
going to hate me for waiting until now. Thanks to some urging from my
Catalan friend, Dolors Permanyer, I've done a little research and I
found an open source code script that will help us use a more graphical
user interface in your blog writing. Another term for it is WYSIWYG --
or What You See Is What You Get. This means that you'll have an option
of getting a more word processor way of writing blog entries using Class
Blogmeister. See here:
Image of WYSIWYG Interface
And here's how it works. The next time you go to write or edit a blog
article, you will see, just above where you normally set the text size,
the following text:
Notice brackets around "Text." This means that you are currently in
text mode. If you click "Graphical," the page will reload into the
graphical mode, with the brackets appearing around that word.
If you run into problems, then just switch back to the text mode, and
I'll fix the problem when I get back from North Dakota.
I've hesitated doing this, because making this much use of Java (and
probably some Ajax) runs into browser compatibility issues. I'm hoping
things have gotten to the point where this is not so much of a problem.

Worked great! As for browser issues, I posted using IE on windows XP, and

One issue is article approval for the teacher - what the teacher sees right
now is html code. A quick way to check it out would be from the class
roster. Check "approve article", and then "View blog". If it looks ok,
you're all set. If not, simply uncheck "Publish?" and "submit blog", which
should get it off the blog.... oops, I just tried this, and it did not
"unpublish". Oh well, the can of worms has been opened - David thanks again
so much!
Ps - people should note you cannot upload images to blogmeister, but you can
easily reference them from another site, like flickr - or any web page

David - wow!! Thanks!!
I just put up a test post from Lincoln, who is actually my cat, but is part

Thanks David,
I can confirm that it also works on Safari on a Mac. Please leave all the features for the teachers who may want to use colors, fonts, highlighting etc. for their articles.
Bob Greenberg http://thebrainwaves.us
David - wow!! Thanks!!
I just put up a test post from Lincoln, who is actually my cat, but is part
of my blogmeister classroom blog at http://roomtwelve.com
Worked great! As for browser issues, I posted using IE on windows XP, and
have viewed as well on Firefox - all working well.

I've been waiting for this one ever since I started using Blogmeister
five years ago!
I have always liked the simple interface of BM and the fact that the
kids CAN't customize too much. (BM's stability as compared to other
free school blogging platforms, this user group, and David himself
are the other major reasons that keep me a loyal user.) As Robert and
Terry and others have said, I'd rather their work stand out for the
lack of colors, lack of widgets, etc.
BUT THE "LINK TO" FEATURE THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO LINK TO ANOTHER
WEBPAGE (AND MAKE IT OPEN AS A NEW WINDOW!)!! YOWZA! The lack of that
single feature has been the only reason I was always playing around
with other programs to replace my use of BM. Now I 'ain't goin'
anywhere!
Yeah, and maybe they will learn to use the other font features to add
text features in meaningful ways (instead of only using all caps to
add emphasis!).
Thanks, David!
Putting that end-of-the-year paypal contribution on my To-Do list.

I was going to object to this type of interface because of the
difficulty with the coding (java) that adds an overlay of complexity
to the blog engine. I had (until now) never seen one that worked
consistently across different interfaces and platforms.
I was also going to say that I think the emphasis should be on the
writing and not the size or color of the font. I have always suggested
to my students that the time spent on making it look pretty would be
better spent on ensuring the quality was there. However, my age is
probably showing and I might be way off base with the current
generation of young writers. I would still hold out for quality over
prettiness but if it gets kids to write, who am I to object.

You make a good point, and one that I've always held. I can always cut
some of the formating out. Just keep it to basics (bold, italics,
underline, hyperlinks, and images.

David,
I'd beg you to leave it all. You've given us another incredible piece for a
fantastic tool. The doors that you've just opened are very wide and will
make Classblogmeister even more appealing. It is of course about writing,
but it's just not that simple anymore.
Please trust us teachers to teach our students how to use it responsibly.
That's our job. - Mark

I posted an article yesterday with a widget, and it was working fine until
today when I noticed a small mistake that I corrected. But when I saved it
(using the normal text option for articles), only the title appeared on my
blog page - nothing else. So I tried publishing and saving it in the new
graphics option, but it will only save the link to the widget (which doesn't
work for some reason) and not display the actual widget. I tried posting
another article and again all I got was the title. Do I have some sort of
problem with compatibility now that there is the graphics option?
You make a good point, and one that I've always held. I can always cut
some of the formating out. Just keep it to basics (bold, italics,
underline, hyperlinks, and images.

I’ve been trying out other things on
my articles pages and have found the following
If I try to publish an article in the text
option, only the title is saved, so now I can’t use text option at all
(and it my preference because it is so easy for 7 and 8 year olds to master).
So I have tried graphics option, with slightly more success, - now what I type
in the text box publishes, but I can’t put any widgets in, so no quizzes,
slideshows, pictures hosted by picoodle etc. . Also even though the option is
there to upload pictures, it doesn’t work. Does anyone else have these
problems now that the graphics option has become available, - everything worked
perfectly up until that point!
Thanks
Sonja

Help with Hitchikr
Hi David

Just a quick note Monday AM –
articles published in text now are properly submitted/received, and articles
published in graphic format can now be approved/unapproved easily from the
Class Roster. Thanks, David!

Just a quick note Monday AM articles published in text now are properly submitted/received, and articles published in graphic
format can now be approved/unapproved easily from the Class Roster. Thanks, David!

Right, Sonja, I think youve found the first bug. In publishing a student article in Text the article does not come through
only the title. I just did a little test and found this to be true for me as well. - Mark

Hi there
Ive been trying out other things on my articles pages and have found the following
If I try to publish an article in the text option, only the title is saved, so now I cant use text option at all (and it my preference
because it is so easy for 7 and 8 year olds to master). So I have tried graphics option, with slightly more success, - now what I type in the text box publishes, but I cant put any widgets in, so no quizzes, slideshows, pictures hosted by picoodle etc. .
Also even though the option is there to upload pictures, it doesnt work. Does anyone else have these problems now that the graphics option has become available, - everything worked perfectly up until that point!
Thanks
Sonja

Hi David
I posted an article yesterday with a widget, and it was working fine until
today when I noticed a small mistake that I corrected. But when I saved it
(using the normal text option for articles), only the title appeared on my
blog page - nothing else. So I tried publishing and saving it in the new
graphics option, but it will only save the link to the widget (which doesn't
work for some reason) and not display the actual widget. I tried posting
another article and again all I got was the title. Do I have some sort of
problem with compatibility now that there is the graphics option?
You make a good point, and one that I've always held. I can always cut

I agree with you in some way,Bob. But it also depends on the teacher how much time their students spend on pretinnes. I think it is good that they can bold some titles and add images or links in an easy way. They don't have to do much more. It also helps readers!
thanks, David!!!
