800K disks   Message List

I don't know how easy 800k disks are to find anymore, so if you have to, you can
use a 1.4M high density floppy. Just put a piece of tape over the hole opposite
the side with the write protection switch (one hole tells the drive the disk is
locked, the hole on the other side tells it it is a high density disk). At this
point you have to reformat the disk, but the computer will be tricked into
formatting it as an 800k floppy. Don't remove the tape unless you are going to
be formatting the disk as a 1.4 again, because it can cause problems. I haven't
tried this in about 7 years, but I remember it working very well. This is the
kind of experiment you and your friends do when you are 12 and have a bunch of
really old macs to screw around with.
